It is. Later Microsoft floppy releases didn't use 1.44 MB floppy disks, they used specially-formatted 1.68 MB disks in a format called DMF:

Because I'm using an 80286
Because my dx50 has way better throughput bigger. Along with my Matrox millenia card, 8 megs of ram (way overkill so far), I can easily pull 60 fps in doom, and 24fps in quake.
