>>51988434
Finally a 10/10 thread. Thanks OP.
>>51988517
It looks to me like they used a fairly bright light to film the interview which looking right into it can easily make your eyes water a bit
This launch will succeed. Dubs confirm.
Betting on launch scrubbed, because I never see launches live.
i will start to edge before T-30minutes and cum at T0 while watching it live
what a time to be alive
>>51988595
kek get those webm making machines ready boys, we seeing explosions today
MODS STICKY THIS THREAD
>>51988434
It better blow up
>>51988612
Nah, you should start at launch and cum on landing. If it landed successfully then you should stop fapping and get a life. Elon believes in you, do you believe in Elon?
>>51988667
His smile and optimism: gone
I'd like to say "isn't this more /sci/'s deal" but knowing /sci/ the thread will get derailed or ruined by calling space X's math inferior or people claiming it's all a hoax because the planet is flat/square/rhombus shaped
>>51988434
The plan will be a success yet again!
BTW, you said you were going to use another image when you made the thread.
>>51988434
Succeed or die trying.
I don't understand. Humans have built rockets before without explode. How are we now building them to explode?
Can someone invent a way to put things into space without using huge amounts of rocket fuel shoved into a tube and pointed upwards?
>>51988807
>Humans have built rockets before without explode
Bullshit. They are exploding all the time, that was the whole point. Making non-exploding rocket is really weird and unnatural.
>>51988856
Space Elevator or Space Slingshot/MAC propulsion. I prefer the latter. It'll be like a fucked up roller coaster.
>>51988807
>>51988856
What's the point of sending anything to space if there aren't explosions?
live stream?
>>51988856
no
easiest way to conquer the amount of energy required to move a certain amount of mass several kilometers into the air is with a rocket.
>>51988883
because they can then cause larger explosions on the way down
What's the point of sending anything to space if there isnt anything but stones and death?
>>51988856
You can. Have a good idea? Start studying related subjects, may even graduate if you're really interested. Good luck.
>>51988807
Plenty of ships exploded in the past.
Every single action of a space mission is a literal shit show and everything could go wrong at any second, destroying somtimes billions of dollars of stuff and/or multiple human lives. Not much has changed in the 50 years. Also the moon landing and the mars missions were all faked.
Update your post OP

This mission was for the deployment of part of the Orbcomm satellite fleet, and had the secondary objective of returning the first stage.
If they can re-use it, thats easily $50M USD that doesnt have to be spent remaking the first stage for the next mission. They can simply refurbish what needs it on this stage, assemble the next second stage and payload on top, and launch again.
Instead of spending ~$65M USD per launch, they can cut it to a sixth that, easily.
Every time they can re-use the booster, thats another $50M USD or so that doesnt have to be spent on building the replacement.
And did he REALLY just say "Nobody wants to go back to Jaku?"

>>51990253
LEO still interacts with the atmosphere, and any craft in LEO will eventually decay and fall back to Earth. It can take years, but without periodic reboosting (most large satellites have onboard fuel and engines), it all comes back down.
>>51990296
This isn't Kerbal Space Program, the atmosphere extends a good deal past the Von Karman line.
>>51990296

I would expect the drag to be pretty minimal at 625km. You're outside the thermosphere. You're basically just colliding with individual molecules that happened to get spit out of the thermosphere.

All of that is inconclusive as to any causation associated with the spill
>>51990337
No joke I learned almost everything I know about space through KSP and sometimes I have a hard time reconciling that information with the reality, like atmosphere in LEO. Also asparagus staging, but I was introduced to that with "okay, first of all, this is bullshit"

Falcon Heavy is actually going to use asparagus staging, sort of. It'll be the first rocket with in-flight fuel transfer from the boosters.
>>51990620
doesn't an ULA rocket do it already?
>>51990620
source?
asparagus is at least 4 boosters right?
>>51990674
It pretty much just means fuel transfer between active rockets

ah right.
>tfw spacex may never launch a falcon heavy with 48 cross fueled liquid fueled boosters.
>>51990674
http://www.nss.org/articles/falconheavy.html
It cross-feeds in flight from the outer boosters to the center stalk. In KSP you could hit X two more times and this would be full-asparagus.
>>51990672
It's in potential future plans for an upgrade to Delta IV, but that may not ever get built since they're working on Vulcan. Currently no one does in flight crossfeed.

is there a single book I could read to learn all I need to know about Rockets? Kind of like Dennis Ritchies C Programming book?

Rocket science isn't that simple.

Crossfeed on Falcon Heavy may not actually happen. I think it's not confirmed dead, but apparently unlikely.

Makes sense. It kind of ran counter to the whole philosophy of mass production and reuse.
Musk just made a telecon call. Check it out:

Pic related seems to be the core "must read" book.

Why? Source?

how?

Sorry, none right at hand and finding a reliable one may not be possible. It's just something I now read regularly on /r/spacex when crossfeed is talked about, so it might just be a rumor, which is why I put "may" there.
>It kind of ran counter to the whole philosophy of mass production and reuse
Not that Anon, but I don't really agree. The center core and the side boosters will be different and non-interchangeable anyways, so it doesn't really matter if crossfeed exists or not I think.

>so it doesn't really matter if crossfeed exists or not I think.
wut?? what has interchangeability with the core have to do with anything?
The benefit is when the boosters detach, the core will be half way to orbit yet still be full of fuel
>>51991162
I was talking about the cores being different from the side boosters anyways, so that when you land them, you can only use cores as cores and side boosters as side boosters. The concept of making the center core go further in itself doesn't go against reusability, it just makes it less likely for the boosters and core to be recoverable.
>>51991208
>it just makes it less likely for the boosters and core to be recoverable.
why?
>>51991244
The side boosters would have less remaining fuel for the landing and the center core would be even faster and even higher up, so safely returning it gets much harder.
>>51991298
>The side boosters would have less remaining fuel for the landing
nope. They just detach whenever they are down to the fuel they need to land.
>center core would be even faster and even higher up,
not if you give it a heavier payload.

It all depends on mission parameters in the end, it can be flown fully (all three) reusable, half reusable, and fully expendable. Crossfeed theoretically allows for another variable to be adjusted, that being center core burn length, which can, depending on the other variables, have positive or negative impact on the landing capability of the different boosters.
>>51991441
>have positive or negative
There's no negative impact though. The core being able to burn longer means more flight time without carrying the weight of the boosters, but still getting the same amount of thrust in the end. You just get more delta V. You can use that to go further, or carry more payload. If you want to go further, put more fuel is the second stage, so the first stage doesn't go as far and can return efficiently. There's no overall net negative here.
>>51991569
There can be a negative, for example if you go further and carry more payload. It'll be a question of whether SpaceX will only offer reusable configurations or also allow expendable ones.
>>51991641
>for example if you go further and carry more payload.
you never need to do that though. You can always not make the first stage go any further by either adding more payload, adding more fuel to the second stage or simply not having as much fuel over all.
