browsing through this board completely blows me away. It amazes me how knowledgeable almost all of you are. I know more than the average person when it comes to electronics, but you guys completely shit on me in comparison. I would like to know how you first learned all this stuff. Is there some book I'm missing out on our something? (Bonus points if you recommend a good book, I like books)

Thanks /b/. I'm long winded, I know.

I learned spending my days perusing the Gentoomans library.

Personally I've always been interested in technology, ever since my mom brought home one of those gateway cow computers when I was a small boy.

Well if you already find something, in this case technology, interesting enough, you'll probably end up seeking out information about it on your own. It's how I became the 1337 haxxor, and so can you.

I know this might be cliche, but I've always had a strong desire to know, I never really knew why, it began with astronomy with me, I used to spend weeks upon weeks reading wikipedia pages, NASA pages, and generally being very knowledgeable about everything space, including all the types of star death, and their details. I stopped when I realized that it's rather hard for me to practice my hobby practically, any telescope worth its mint was so fucking damn holy-fuck-shit-son expensive, and as a kid I didn't have nowhere that much cash, so I slowly stopped. Then I began studying nuclear physics, including all them dank bombs, all of the dankest isotopes, but when I tried again to practice it practically, the most I could do is get a geiger counter and go looking around for anything radioactive to take home, which seemed boring considering that everything interesting that could be done was illegal to posses/create.

So I got into electronics, here, practically applying and practicing my knowledge was easy, constant; consistent, so I quickly stuck with it. Electronics and components are readily available everywhere around us, computers cost a few dollars now, and it had a shit ton of practical knowledge, I began with high voltage, finding it the most fascinating, I created transformers, circuits, tesla coils, multipliers, etc, then I slowly got into computing, which introduced me to my current hobby, microcontrollers, IoT, task automation and smart devices. Which any amount of practicing with, will make you realize that Linux is necessary, so from there I got into the Linux community, I began appreciating the UNIX way and getting into it myself, and gradually, after having solved many issues myself, and mastering the terminal, I became another self-proclaimed GNU/Linux guru. I gradually became more and more of a purist, I lurked /g/, advocated freedom, and after staying in here for a long while, I realized that /g/ is actually just a bunch of (cont)
>>
>>51977099
really, really, really dumb people, or a big group of circle-jerking trolls, but I have reasons not to believe the latter, since it'd be very hard to keep all the users of /g/ coordinated in such an elaborate display of stupidity. Only a handful (read: 1%) actually know what they're talking about, and this is the story of my degradation, how I went from useful scientific and engineering topics to wasting my time with such a dumb community, I've been trying to get back into engineering and microcontrollers, but /g/ and GNU/Linux are too much of a time-sink, and I constantly find myself not having time, and not being interested because /g/ has too much of a pull towards it. I considered myself to have been constantly improving throughout my life as I practiced my hobbies, but it feels as if I've suddenly dropped into a steep low.

If you intend to do anything useful with your life, this is not the place, get out while you can. Save yourself, because once you're deep into here, you're here forever.
>>
>>51977099
Your childhood sounds very similar to mine. I would always go through different interests, learning everything I could possibly about them until I would get bored and move on to the next. Computers and technology have really stuck with me though, and it always will.

I can not agree more with this statement. The only reason I come on this board is to laugh at how retarded some of the posts are.

Every now and then you will find someone who does know there shit though.

Just so OP knows, I started learning about technology at a later point in my life than most (14) but have rapidly learnt things from then. If you don't have the motivation to self learn technology then I suggest going to university. Just getting assignments done will help you learn a lot if you try to get the best grade possible. You will also realize how much self learning you have to do to get it as a tutor will only show you some directions you could go but won't explain it unless you specifically ask for an explanation on a certain thing.

no one here knows shit, here are the following faggots youll find on this board:

>i know how to build a computer
congratulations, faggot, you can now do something an indian toddler can do

>i use leenux
wow, you can use an overly obtuse OS and achieve nothing of significance, enjoy spending 5000 hours tweaking it so you can watch shitty anime rips

>i support [product] [company]
shills aside, you have actual faggots here who support one company over another, and will defend their chosen company to the death like its their favourite football team, its pathetic, its like putting 2 jews in a boxing ring and getting upset when one of them gets hit

I just finished an hour long jerk with my wonderwave fleshlight and tons of lube. Fuck yeah it was good. To the video with this girl I got from my Naughty America account. Mindy Main. It's like jerking off to a 16 year old scene girl. My dick is still throbbing in pleasure. I laugh at you faggots you spend all day trying to get a girl, flirting, trying to entertain her, wasting your energy on that shit. You spend tons of time and money trying to make it seem like you have a social life so they think you're cool. You spend hours talking to her every day, wasted time. You have to put up with all that bullshit women spew, you have to keep her entertained, put up with her little games. I laugh at you. If I want a real bitch, I'll buy an escort. I've got a $50 for 15 minute deal with this model looking chick. About what you'd spend going out. No drama, no flirting, no game required ;) up front no bullshit. the way it should be.

I get up, go surfing in the morning for an hour. I then go home, take a shower, and go to work. I get to troll /g/ all day since my job fucking kicks ass, and I make $105,000 a year. I then get home and play Crysis/COD4/UT3 on my AMD QUAD CORE PC, with 4 gigs of RAM, and 2 8800 GTX video cards. On my 30" LCD Monitor. Then i go and watch some TV in HD on my 1080i 50" plasma TV, on my leather couch, and go back to the PC if i like. Or i can take my .50 cal Barrett rifle down to the range and feel like a badass.

Then i get home, jerk off, and go back to playing games. Drama Free, Freedom. perfect life. I hope you faggots enjoy your shitty ass minimum wage jobs, and spending all your free time and energy on some whore and getting social status. While I enjoy relaxing and being worry free. All so you can say "I have a life" and prove yourself to others.

Muck around with stuff. Take things apart and put them back together again. If something's broken, try to fix it, repurpose it or cannibalise it for parts. Google for information on any step of the process you can't figure out for yourself.

I never had much experience because my family never really used them and public schools didn't really teach you anything other than typing and how to use proprietary office suites, so I was pretty dumb when it came to computers. Hell, I didn't even know how to download a file from the internet until I was 18. But I got a laptop and I hated being so inept at using it and little by little I came to understand more and more about how computers work, and over time, that understanding increased to where it is today. I'm won't say I'm knowledgable on computers as a whole, there are many things that I'd be unable to do without online resources but compared to the layman, I'm leaps and bounds ahead of them.

As long as you keep trying new things, you'll need to learn new things and your knowledge will increase. If all you do on your computer is browse and watch YIFY rips, you'll never be any smarter, but if you say to yourself, "Gee, this video quality is really poor, I wonder why?" and look it up, you'll already be miles ahead of where you were two minutes prior

had a shitty computer, wanted to play mechwarrior 3 on it.

basically asked jeeves and finally google lots of questions about how to make my computer faster.

belive it or not, theer was a sliver of time that 4chan has forgotten when /g/ was actually a decent source (right around the time just before vista came out) i think some of the people on the crack teams for bypassing WGA and shit were lurking/posting here a lot, which could be why the quality of the content was so high

there's a lot to cover between then and now, but let's just say that i've worked in IT and as a software dev, and finally now in InfoSec over the past 10 years.

i still browse just for kicks, but i wish the desktop threads, phone threads, homescreen threads, and brandwars would go away. they did'nt used to be like this. i remember when a desktop thread was just a bunch of tidus.jpg's

Honestly it began for me at around 13 when I was trying to look at pr0ns on the internet.

Got a bucket load of viruses which I attempted to fix without alerting the parentals. Managed to do it, so I did it again and again... Then I got bored of that and started building them myself out of computers I found on scrap heaps

Modding my psp taught me alot, doing the patapon savestate exploit and running halfbyte loader was too much fun. Flashing a cfw and fucking it up, bricking my lovely pearl psp. Then learning how flash memory works and attempting it again on generic black psp. Modding the OS resources to make a custom ui, making wallpapers to match. Taking games like rockband and creating song/note chart midis to play some of my favorite songs. This was just some of the shit i did when i was ~12 being a tinker really got me far
