What you have described can each be unique operations
>>
>>51976431

I always saw options as something that turn features on/off while preferences modify existing features.

Same shit at the end of the day

Usually preferences are simply aesthetic changes and settings are actual feature settings

Edit > Preferences

Everything else is trash tier. View should be dedicated to enabling on screen displays and window management. There should not be a dedicated preferences menu, that should be a tab inside of the options pane. File should have the majority of its abilities taken up by file operations like saving, closing, opening and exporting.

Preferences shouldn't be a top level thing in the UI.

This is one of the few things Mac has over Linux: a standardized preferences/options shortcut.

if you don't use the .config directory, you are everything that's wrong with the world.

JUST FOLLOW THE UNIX SPEC DEVS REEEE
>>
>>51978480
There's the FHS, which every distro follows except the shitty ones.

Then there's user configs, which is impossible to get standardization for millions of independent devs unless you play dictator like Apple.

It's only a problem if you're autistic though, just hide dotfiles during normal use.

fucking americans.
>>
>>51978767
What do you mean why? That's the XDG standard, which doesn't mean a lot in the UNIX world, but it's more prevalent in the personal desktop Linux space because GUI apps.

>>51978629
It's not "fucking it up". UNIX didn't have any standards for user apps because user apps are literally all third party.

The old "de facto" standard is .<name>rc if your program only has a config file and .<name> folder if your program uses more than one file. But again, there's no standard, for the same reason different countries don't have the same standard language.
>>
>>51977406
2nd choice makes more sense IMO as in Edit the Preferences, putting it under Tools makes no sense to me
