Hey /g/

I have been recently meaning to update my audio listening and a neighbor for the holidays gave me this awesome present.
Now, I know that these speakers have to be connected via red/black cables and connect into an audio receiver/amplifier.

A couple questions is a receiver different than an amplifier? And how would I go about setting this up because I have 0 knowledge in this spectrum.

I have picked out a couple different amps/ receivers and have landed upon these two, which one of these would be optimal.

My primary listening sources are cd's and records.

Ha, the box was upside down and opened. I didn't want to flip it around because it weighs a ton.

White Van 'special'. I hope you're trolling, OP.

Hey buddy, not to be a downer, but what you have there are known as "white van" speakers. These type of speakers are made with the cheapest components (the graphics of the box probably cost more than the speakers) and sold to unsuspecting people out of the back of a van.

Epic Sound is on the no good list:

http://www.ebay.com/gds/White-Van-Scam-Fake-Speakers-Audio-AV-List-/10000000177653117/g.html

It's cool you got them for free, but they're not worth spending 200-500.00 on a receiver/amp for. They might sound "okay," but I'd check out the thrift stores and craigslist and try to find a used 5.1 receiver, which can be had for 20.00.

Well no matter if they are shitty or not, The sound will be somewhat decent at least, I'm no audiophile so I won't notice if it's low quality like they would.
I just need them to fill the room and play some records/cd's out of.
>>
>>51972893
ok. looks like the usual 5.1 setup you would wire with 16 gauge copper wire in bi-amping.

except the subwoofer needs its own amp aswell as it seems

Sometimes you can get lucky with these white vanners and have "decent" sound quality, but usually you'll start to hear very bad distortion rather quickly as you crank them up. These speakers are also known to damage amps in some cases.

For the 300.00 you were willing to spend on the Onkyo integrated, you can build a nice system going used that will fill the room and blow away those white van specials.

If you don't mind telling me what city you're in (if you're in the US), I can browse your local CL for you real quick and suggest some stuff.

NYC
Or you can help me find some on Amazon? I have a budget of 500 for the entire system.

I'll see what I can find.

Are they referral links?
>>

No, Just some receivers I found on Amazon.

Liar. Its referral links you twat. you probably sell those fucking speaks out of a white van as well.

These beat a pair of 4K Martin Logans in a blind listening test.

Integrated amp, with 2 inputs (this amp is also on Amazon's marketplace I believe):

https://emotiva.com/products/amplifiers/fusion-flex

What model is your turntable? The Emotiva doesn't have a phono in, but if you have the ATLP-120 or another table that already has a built in phono pre amp, so you can just hook it up to the Emotiva's line level inputs.

That system puts you right a 500.

These are also very good floorstanders and they're a bit cheaper:

I lean toward the Infinities. I like Harman's design and quality control philosophy.

And cheap little phono preamp in case you need one. If possible, I'd go a bit higher end (like something from Pro-Ject), but since you're not overly obsessive about sound quality, this should be fine. You can always upgrade later.

I recognized those as white van speakers the second I clicked on that pic.

At any rate, there are only a couple big differences between a receiver and an amplifier.

A receiver has an amplifier in it, but it also has multiple HDMI inputs and an HDMI output. A receiver is designed to be the hub of an inclusive entertainment system. It handles inputs from Bluray players, a Roku, game consoles, HTPCs, etc and it routes them all to a single TV and set of speakers. As such, receivers also typically have 5.1/7.1 speaker outputs and they will also decode DTS signals. Receivers will also typically have other features like sound calibration where it plays a test sound and automatically calibrates a parametric EQ so your system sounds nice and flat (a good thing).

Integrated amps are designed more for music. It will have multiple inputs, but you will typically use these inputs for a PMP, a turntable (if it has RIAA equalization), etc. Of course you can connect your game console to it, but integrated amps typically won't have video outputs. It may also have an equalizer, but it probably won't have automatic sound calibration. You buy an integrated amp if you want a specialized amp that does one thing very well- amplify sound, usually just for music. As such, you'd probably have it connected to higher end speakers so you shouldn't need to EQ at all.

So for these speakers seems like I would need an amp.
No matter if they are white van speakers, I'm not an audiophile.

>No matter if they are white van speakers, I'm not an audiophile.

Like I told you before, brother, you don't need to be an audiophile to hear how bad these speakers will sound, especially if your goal to fill a room with sound.

They'll also likely break/blow after a few days of play. Most of these things don't even have crossovers.
