How come Android never had its equivalent of the iPod touch? Essentially a (relatively) cheap, no-contract PMP that would potentially ease consumers into data contract handsets?
They did, but no kid wants an ipod touch knockoff with shitty apps
This costs over a thousand dollars. Pure audiophile-grade!
Because you can just buy a cheap, prepaid phone and never activate it. I'm sure there are android PMPs out there, but why get it when your phone already does it or you can get a cheap phone to use as a PMP.
Samsung Galaxy Player.

It kinda did with Sansa and all the low cost, Java mp3 players out there.

This. I grabbed a bunch of the prepaid Verizon$10 Moto E phones that Best Buy was selling on Black Friday, to pass out to my nieces & nephews for Christmas. Thankfully my siblings are tech savvy enough to know you don't have to activate them, and just use them on WiFi.

There were a few Android "MP4 players" in the market (essentially small android tablets), but they never were too successful. maybe because you can buy a chinese android phone for $50 and it can play music.
You can get any android phone and boom media player.
Just get a used S3 for like 75 bucks, grab a 64gb microsd card, root and throw on cyanogen or whatever and even maybe get a large battery and case!
It's a good idea. I do it.

Pretty much this, going this route you don't have to worry about your media player going to shit since it's already so fukkin cheap to begin with.
