I'm not saying I'm fond of it, but it's a harsh reality. Once you adopt systemd and maintan the distro for at least half a year with it, everything becomes so intertwined with and dependent on systemd that going back and dropping it would hardly be a feasible option anymore. Sadly almost all major distro maintainers (foremostly those most widely used in production environments, i.e Red Hat, Debian, and Suse) did exactly this.
