It just clicked:
We've had so many fucking connector revisions and changes (and complete paradigm shifts) over the years, ata to sata, firewire to thunderbolt, USB to mini, mini to c, vga to dvi to hdmi to displayport, but fucking power connectors? Why are we stuck with this shit?
They're either tight as fuck so when they finally get loose you end up inadvertently punching something or ripping a cable to shit, or so loose that you have to fucking hotglue them.
Why can't we get something basic, same pins (Perhaps one for 3.3v, one for 5 and one for 12, all separated by ground) in an enclosure with some non-shit locking mechanism.
And don't even bring up that SATA shit, they're nice connectors but I've seen too many melt and they just take up space for a smaller application.

If it aint be broke then dont be fixing it
>>
Haven't touched my machines in ages, just been working on thin clients and VM's, this thing's just so frustrating to work with.
Where's the elegance in this?
I'm starting to understand why people wire their own PSU's on a fit-to-case basis, but the end connectors make it all for shit.
>>51927604
But it is broke. And fuck it, I'll design a god dam replacement.

Self-locking connectors are standard on high end electronics, but I suppose the reasoning here is that power connectors aren't something you have to deal with on a regular basis enough to warrant a more expensive part, for the majority of people it's a set and forget deal.

After being into RC cars for years and dealing with tamiya connectors, no molex even so much as phases me anymore

dude, all it is is copper wrapped in plastic.
just bundle the wires in a fucking rap to make "one wire" and put a thing like a locking lightning plug on it. plebs would love it.

there isn't anything wrong with the current power plug
>>
Within the next few years, we'll all be using PCI-E SSD's.

The only power cables you'll be using are the ones going to your motherboard and video card. I can't wait for that. I love minimalism and less cables to manage.
>>
>>51927767
by then I think video cards will get power through the mobo too, and have a plug in higher end video cards to use if your mobo doesn't supply enough power.
>>
>>51927742
>there isn't anything wrong with the current power plug
THERE
IS
NO
FUCKING
LOCKING

But a lightning/type-c style plug might be a good idea, spare the current limits.
>>
>>51927767
Some of us use things other than toys.
Wait fuck, I take that condensation back, if SSD's are parity with HDD cost in 5 years, then there's no reason not to just have a giant PCB with 30 or so M2 connectors on them for a server.
Fuck me that'd be nice.
>>
>>51927786
Video cards already get 75watts from the motherboard.
>>
>>51927871
tell me why you need locking in something you install then never touch?
>>
>>51927893
you can tell I don't know what I'm talking about
>>
>>51927899
Because not all conectors are made with uniform thickness so you get shit like molex where a cable will unplug itself from its own weight, or simply never having been secured in the first place at all.

When was the last time you used a 4pin molex?

My computer is full Sata.

I like sata, but it's a little too melty.
Also I don't see it much on peripherals.

>>51927997

Still shouldn't be pulling over 100w through the motherboard. I know AMD has specifically worked on making sure their cards don't go over the 75w limit (which is why - iiirc - the 295x2 would actually run out of spec for its pcie power connectors just so it won't kill a motherboard).
>>
>>51927611
>frustrating to work with
You must not lift at all. Hell even jerking it should give you enough finger/arm strength to handle a Molex connector. Are you a grill?
>>
>>51928010
Most additional chassis are still 4pin.
Shit psu or not, I've had 4 friends with melted sata power connectors. Never happened to me though, but I still find it cumbersome for purpose.
>>51928066
It's not pulling that's the problem, it's my hand flicking back once it disconnects. In a tight space this can do damage.

>>51928091
A good design should shine through bad manufacturing.
>>
What's wrong with molex? They're cheap, easy to manufacture and do the job, it's not like you're unplugging them on a daily basis.
>>
>>51928143
that's like saying buying a rolex from china warrants it being as good as a legit rollex.

seriously, you're so fucking dumb. stop being a pussy bitch

also, if it isn't made to specs obviously it's going to fucking suck (eg. loose or too tight)

I don't know where the fuck you live but Sata optical drives have sata power connectors.
>>
>>51928169
When you're designing an open standard to be used by hundreds of manufacturers that could very well be a fire hazard then designing it with shitty manufacturing in mind is probably a good idea.
Safety standards aren't made with only OSHA themselves in mind, they're designed to apply to all levels of competency.
>>
>>51928125

Are you actually retarded? You don't just pull, you move it from side to side a little until the tightest part is over.
>>
>>51928189
Not all of them do. In fact I've seen some early SATA hdd's with Molex power.
>>
>>51928224
Sorry, i thought we lived in 2015, not 1985.
>>
>>51928189

Some have both. A lot of basic peripherals still use molex/4pin.

I can't even find a picture of a DVD drive with both the sata and 4pin.

Just get a power supply that has small spring-load mechanism on the connector, and you won't have any more problems with molex.

Heck, the only time I have problems with molex is when the connectors are the cheaper, poorly constructed ones.
>>
>>51928395
That's a picture of a fucking harddrive, do you have problem reading?
>>
>>51928464
you're trying too hard
why the fuck are you bringing a desktop on a train?
you must be a poor fag if you don't fly.

also:
1. when you move a desktop you're supposed to expect it to either break of be fine, hence why you check it out before plugging it back in, idiot.

and that goes for all it's parts, not just the plug
I had to include that caveat so you don't waste your time making new video card and ram standards

2you're a fag

how old are you op?
>>
>>51928512
those things are so fucking hard to disconnect sometimes the wire get ripped off from the little tube thing, good thing you can just push in place again.
>>
>>51928568
You grab the tube, not the wires, to disconnect it. And you can just press the push the springs on the top and bottom, and it'll disconnect ten times easier.

Like I said, the only time I have trouble with Molex is with shitty cheaply made connectors. Higher quality ones are not problematic.
