Overkill powersupply edition!
Question : what was the worst decision you made when buying your computer ?
>>
Buying intel
>>
not buying an aftermarket cooler. snapped my $400 motherboard in two pieces when i was installing an intel cooler with the plastic clips when i pressed down too hard.
>>
buying a amd cpu.
>>
Buying a Lian li case for $300.

It was easy to work with and looked nice. I buy a new computer/case every four years anyway and want a new case each time. Oh well
>>
Buying a corsair 900d when I have a single GPU setup with a 1000W PSU and an I7 5930k.

Welp. At least another 980 and I'll be ready for 4gay gaming

Mein nigger

Reporting in with overkill PSU
>>
>>51923019
Serious question. Just got my r5 today and ran out of funds for new psu got a decent CPU mb cooling system the works. Can I start building and use 350 watt psu. I got msi gda x79 i7 3820 old gpu a few HDDs and an SSD (Samsung 850 pro 512gb) fractal define r5 and corsair h110i gtx Worried my psu is too shitty
>>
>>51923200
How do you fuck that up? Even a partially aborted Chinese kid doesn't fuck it up while building them for Acer.
>>
>>51923200
>$400 motherboard

Why??
>>
>>51923999

What GPU is it? You'll probably be fine as long as you don't push your system too hard. Worst case it will just shut off - nothing should get damaged.
>>
>>51924119
I was planning on upgrading them both this holidays but didn't realize how shit my stock psu was. Not worth building on until I get a new PSU. Apparently I need500w + I was hoping to OC cause i encode videos but it never occurred to me my weakest element was the psu until I started taking the build apart =\. Any reccs?

I have an old nvidia gtx 550
>>
>>51923999
I wouldn't build yet, you won't damage anything if you do but the thing will probably turn off pretty quickly given its power needs. Just save your efforts putting the real power supply in.
>>
>>51923019
>Corsair
I'm sorry for your lots.
>>
>>51924185

This guy is probably right if you are doing video encoding, but for just basic duties you will be fine, my 980tiSli + 5960x only pulls ~250w on light duty. As for recommendations, anything by seasonic is usually good.
>>
>>51923721
damn, that is a beautiful PC

Buying two 780ti's when 90% of the games I play don't properly support SLi and running one card as dedicated physx with SLi disabled usually yields higher and more stable frames.

Started taking PC apart that was a last second photo. Putting it back together now. Some idiot built this for me clearly with the worst case too

Should be good with new psu maybe modern gpu too
>>
>>51924344

He might be posting from his phone.

So I have an i5 4590, coupled with an R9 280x. The pcpartpicker list for my build is estimated at 473w. I'm currently running a Corsair CX500 PSU. I mainly use this system for gayming, up to 3 hours or more a day max. Is there any reason I should consider getting a different PSU? I'm hearing how the CX series isn't the best.
>>
>>51924240
Go with seasonic next time. Their prices are really reasonable and they are really good in build quality. Mine has been running for a few months without issues and many people swear by it. My friend has been through 2 or 3 corsair psus and his corsair case is falling apart. How in the hell you mess up a case is beyond me.
>>
>>51923307
Fucking this so much.
>>
>>51924462

I've always had seasonic before. I got this in the sales and it was too good to pass up, now I know why!
>>
>>51924459
Running it that close to full load might trip it. But hey, if it works run it till it dies. If not get a 650w or somewhere close. Seasonic makes great psus, corsair is just shit in general.
>>
>Intel i7-3960X
That was not the fuck up, I got the 3960X for free. The fuck up was using it and paying a fuckton for the shittly LGA 2011 mobo.

i never used even 600w if corsair link is to
be trusted. Gonna have to check that tho.

A: Aw man, where do i begin.
>>

The exception is Gold and up PSU's, their OEM spread over the last 5 years has been impressive.
Otherwise I'd totally agree.

I have an AX860 now, and I'm regretting spending $400+ each on my 670s almost three years ago.
>>
>>51924487
Yup. I have a Cooler Master psu that out lived the motherboard I used it on. They might not be too bad either or I got lucky. But I really like the seasonic with the fan control and modular cables. Made it easy to fit it in a tight space, right next to fans.

>>
>>51924576
I've heard that they are just rebranded seasonics. You probably could. I haven't bought one from them so I can't speak from personal experience. If you go that way just read the reviews and make sure it's the same quality.
>>
>>51924640
>I have heard
Go and find out yourself.
Most 'brands' have several OEMs supply their PSUs for varying price segments of their units.

JonnyGURU, everyone. Search potential new PSUs there. Fairly thorough testing and opening of product.

>>
>>51924661
I bought an actual seasonic, I was just trying to help that anon out.
>>
>>51923200
I installed the biggest cooler from noctua on my board and didn't manage to snap it. Then carried it down a flight of stairs with the cooler facing sideways. How the hell do you fuck that up?
Also, >$400 motherboard
>>
>>51924379
>built this for me
Fuck off.
>>
>>51923721
would an 850w be enough for a 980ti hybrid sli?
>>
I regret not buying a better motherboard. The one I have now is not very good for overclocking and I need to ramp the voltages higher than I'm comfortable with to gain stability.
>>
>>51924870

Which CPU? I'm currently running that build on an 860W with no issue
>>
>>51924720
I was just tryna help the earlier annon you recommended the seasonic to. Id recommend it too. I allways check my PSUs on Jonnyguglu tho im not the anon that recommended it. Actually i just skip to the scoring.

use a power usage calculator, it should be fine tho i was running a 980ti and 4680 @4.5 on a 700w,
i calculated i was using 704 watts, so idk
>>
>>51923057
YES!!! 2500k never obsolete :(
>>
>>51923307

>>
Getting an mATX case.
Even with an h100i, at 4770k at 4.0ghz my CPU will hit 75c+ in AIDA 64 CPU+FPU tests.

Meanwhile everyone else hits 60c max.

>buying a 980 instead of 390X
>>
>>51924503
Funny you mention that, I suppose I got unlucky.
My seasonic G650 PSU stuffed up 3 months in, the PC doesn't start unless I leave it off for ages and come back. Or fuck around with the power button and PSU switch until I get the right timing.

Hooked up an older PSU and it worked without a hitch so I RMAed it won't get it back until after the end of the year.

>>
Spend all the money you want, if the power feeding your house is slightly off, you may as well have bought a shitty psu. This happens alot more than most people realize and there is nothing you can do about it. Your local Utilities can refuse to fix the issue and refuse responsibility for replacement of damaged items. A close friend of mine lost most of his appliances in the course of a year due to an old pole transformer in his neighborhood. Poor fucker replaced a couple items twice before he caught on to what was happening.

Fucking hate my PSU, the one I wanted (modular) was out of stock and I couldn't stand to sit on a case full of unused parts any longer. I picked it for the blue stickers I could have easily covered up on any other PSU anyway. At least it was cheap and the LED can be turned off.
