Question : what was the worst decision you made when buying your computer ?
Buying intel
not buying an aftermarket cooler. snapped my $400 motherboard in two pieces when i was installing an intel cooler with the plastic clips when i pressed down too hard.
buying a amd cpu.
Buying a Lian li case for $300.
It was easy to work with and looked nice. I buy a new computer/case every four years anyway and want a new case each time. Oh well
Buying a corsair 900d when I have a single GPU setup with a 1000W PSU and an I7 5930k.
Welp. At least another 980 and I'll be ready for 4gay gaming

I was planning on upgrading them both this holidays but didn't realize how shit my stock psu was. Not worth building on until I get a new PSU. This guy is probably right if you are doing video encoding, but for just basic duties you will be fine, my 980tiSli + 5960x only pulls ~250w on light duty. As for recommendations, anything by seasonic is usually good.

So I have an i5 4590, coupled with an R9 280x. The pcpartpicker list for my build is estimated at 473w. I'm currently running a Corsair CX500 PSU. I mainly use this system for gayming, up to 3 hours or more a day max. Is there any reason I should consider getting a different PSU? I'm hearing how the CX series isn't the best.

Go with seasonic next time. Their prices are really reasonable and they are really good in build quality. Mine has been running for a few months without issues and many people swear by it. My friend has been through 2 or 3 corsair psus and his corsair case is falling apart. How in the hell you mess up a case is beyond me.

Running it that close to full load might trip it. But hey, if it works run it till it dies. If not get a 650w or somewhere close. Seasonic makes great psus, corsair is just shit in general.

Yup. I have a Cooler Master psu that out lived the motherboard I used it on. They might not be too bad either or I got lucky. But I really like the seasonic with the fan control and modular cables. Made it easy to fit it in a tight space, right next to fans.

Getting an mATX case.
Even with an h100i, at 4770k at 4.0ghz my CPU will hit 75c+ in AIDA 64 CPU+FPU tests.
Meanwhile everyone else hits 60c max.

My seasonic G650 PSU stuffed up 3 months in, the PC doesn't start unless I leave it off for ages and come back. Or fuck around with the power button and PSU switch until I get the right timing.
Hooked up an older PSU and it worked without a hitch so I RMAed it won't get it back until after the end of the year.

Spend all the money you want, if the power feeding your house is slightly off, you may as well have bought a shitty psu. This happens alot more than most people realize and there is nothing you can do about it. Your local Utilities can refuse to fix the issue and refuse responsibility for replacement of damaged items. A close friend of mine lost most of his appliances in the course of a year due to an old pole transformer in his neighborhood. Poor fucker replaced a couple items twice before he caught on to what was happening.

Fucking hate my PSU, the one I wanted (modular) was out of stock and I couldn't stand to sit on a case full of unused parts any longer. I picked it for the blue stickers I could have easily covered up on any other PSU anyway. At least it was cheap and the LED can be turned off.
