is changing a phenom II x4 955 ( currently at 3,8ghz) for an fx 6300 give me any bust in performance?
i plan to buy better board and 1800 mhz rams
should i also change cpu or should i keep the phenom
>>
it will be paired with r9 380 2gb with i already own
>>
The phenom has better single core performance thus its better for gaming

I thought the fx 6300 had slightly better ipc?
And it overclocks much higher, some people have been getting over 5ghz with it.
On the other hand, op is gaining 2 integer units at the cost of one fpu.
>>
>>51918432
according to all benchmarks fx have a slightly better single core performance clock to clock
really small one tho
the point is most fx oc easily to 4,5 ghz with cant be said for phenom mine is at its limit on 3,8 on current board i thing i can get it to 4 on better one but i don't expect more
>>

*think
>>
>>51918627
Any specific reason in just sticking to AMD? cheaper chips to overclock vs intel ks?
>>
>>51918674
only price really fx 6300 cost half of i5 4460
leave alone skylake
even considering having to get better board to oc fx compare to any shit for locked i5
amd is still 1/3 cheaper than intel

Couldn't find a 3.8ghz phenom ii x4, but here's a 3.7ghz one pitted against the 3.5ghz fx 6300.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/362?vs=699

The phenom might win in single threaded benchmarks but if you scroll down you'll see that the fx is actually performing better in games. And then consider that the fx is at stock clocks here, and has much better potential once overclocked, you can see how it's a decent upgrade.

>>51918404
Look on the used market if you can find one cheap, it's a decent upgrade but I wouldn't say it's a significant or massive upgrade, especially if you don't plan to overclock much. At 4.5ghz it should rival an Ivy i5. Iirc in crysis 3 it matches or beats a haswell i5.

>>51918865
You should check out the x4 860k if price is involved, seems to be the best budget overclockable cpu on the market

It can match an i5 4460 when all 6 threads are in use. It'll be great when dx12 comes out because it scales better across more cores.

>>51918959
It is, if not on having better multithread performance then on higher overclocking.
>>
>>51919003
its 4 cores at similar clock for clock performance to my phenom
i don't see a point to change phenom or athlon

not to mention fx 4300 is much cheaper than x860k

if i change my cpu i will go for fx 6300 or fx 8300
i just wanted to know if i will feel the real difference

because now for example far cry 4 stutter as fuck
but i think not only cupu but also slow ram add to it
i have 6gb at 1333mhz with shity timings
>>
>>51919164
If you're going for a fx 8xxx processor, grab the 8320e.
It's been binned to run at a lower voltage with a lower tdp.
>>
>>51919341
also lower clock and performance i'm not concerned about tdp at all i have an after market cooler and impact on energy bills is negligible
>>
>>51918404

Why dick around with a 6300 instead of getting the 8350?

The 8350 is the best value by far. Good performance without going into crazy TDP territory.
>>
>>51919531
>i'm not concerned about tdp at all i have an after market cooler and impact on energy bills is negligible

The TDP issue is whether or not your motherboard can supply it.
>>
>>51919573
This.
Also it'll run cooler when you overclock it too, and it should overclock better.
>>
>>51919548
well price increase form 8300 to 8350 is just not worth it considering you can make 8350 out of 8300 in just seconds with tweakes in bios

im considering fx 6300 and fx 8300
>>
>>51918404
I have an 8350 and it's pretty awesome. I don't even need to OC it in the games i play. That said op:
>is changing a phenom II x4 955 ( currently at 3,8ghz) for an fx 6300 give me any bust in performance?
For what application? Gaming? Video editing? 3d rendering? The FX series is good for multithreading purposes and newer games that can actually access the 8 cores in chips like the 8350 (fallout 4 is a great example), but in games that are very intensive, witcher 3, crysis, ect, the low single thread performance will hold you back if you don't overclock.

Also use the fucking /sqt/ jesus christ.
>>
>>51920577
>fallout 4
I thought that was limited to 2 cores unless you mod it?
>>
>>51921293

I'm

>>51919548

If that's true, then you could have fooled me. I put all eight cores up on-screen with MSI Afterburner and they all seem to be working fairly evenly. I rarely see any one core exceed 50%.
>>
>>51919897
>well price increase form 8300 to 8350 is just not worth it considering you can make 8350 out of 8300 in just seconds with tweakes in bios

Uh. Okay? And what about comparing that to an 8350 with a similar level of tweaks applied?

I got my 8350 for, I dunno, $130 on sale over a year ago. Fantastic deal. If you're not in a hurry, set a deal alert on it and scoop one up for $120 or something. Slickdeals showed Amazon dropped to $129 about a month ago.
>>
>>51921654
Did you enable the multi thread thing in the console? Because that shouldn't happen unless you've enabled that
>>
>>51921755
>Did you enable the multi thread thing in the console?

No. I've never opened the console.

> Because that shouldn't happen unless you've enabled that

I don't believe you. At all.

Locked Skylake chips can be OCed now, so even that point is becoming moot.

>>51922629
I doubt Intel is happy about that.
How long till they threaten motherboard manufacturers or release a microde that bricks all non k systems that were overclocked?

Hell if I know, but I'm making sure to grab one before shit gets locked down.

An unlocked i3 was something I wanted out of the G3258 reveal, and dreams are coming true.
>>
>>51922629

200+ dollar mobo for OC
>>
>>51922676
Also isn't that only available on the expensive motherboards only?
I'd love it if Intel wouldn't fuck it up though, an i3 that's been heavily overclocked would be amazing value, depending on how much the motherboard costs.
>>
>>51922722

That's like if I were to say you'd need a $200 board for OCing an 8350.

Z170 boards are around ~$100. Considering you can get one with an i3 for cheaper than an unlocked i5 by itself, that's a fucking amazing value.

>>51922734

After updating BIOS, any Z170 board from ASRock and MSI can do it at the moment.

Gigabyte and Asus will probably support it in a few days.
>>
>>51918404
I would hold off until Zen comes out.
>>
>>51918404

I have yet to run into a situation where my CPU is bottlenecking me, and I have an old 4 core Athlon 2. Your phenom is fine.
>>
>>51918404
That's a complete waste of money, get an i5 4460 for a major upgrade

Are these scores normal for a 4790k? Seems pretty high considering my old FX-6350 was only getting 550 oc'ed at 4.5.
>>
>>51922757
How much cheaper than the i5 is it?
4 cores is still better than 4 threads, if it's less than 50 dollars difference I'll probably get a lower model i5 and overclock that.
In ausfailia there's like a $120 difference between an i3 and an i5 iirc.
>>

>>
>>51923092
Intel has like a 40-50% lead in per core performance
>>
>>51923131
Damn........
>>
>>51923147
of course AMD takes the lead in performance per dollar as far as gaming PCs go

And I think AMD is still the champ for mass virtual machines
>>
>>51923118

About a $56 difference in the states thanks to shitty inflation. It used to be more but the i3 prices are rising steadily.

The i5 6400 seems to be the only CPU that hasn't had its prices hit retardedly hard by the shortage.
>>
>>51923193
In that scenario you may as well get the i5.
You will benefit far more from 4 cores.
>>
>>51923284

The i3 is still a crazy value if you're gonna be running games that benefit more from single threaded performance like MMOs or older titles.
