It was done by a German headphone shop. They seem to be finding out that STAX can be very finicky on dummy heads. The bass level is off, but the data looks about right otherwise
They have other measurements of STAX, here's one of the rare 4070.

I have a good $100 to spend that I have to spend for Christmas or my mother would be upset, but I also wanted to buy some manga and a CD. I'm on the fence about whether or not to buy that new FiiO M3 player, but if I were to just buy a $20 chink player, whose stock earphones would 必ず be shit, what would I use to listen to it?
For listening to music outside purposes, mostly jazz but also jazz-inspired rock music and electronic pop.

Funny that you say that, jsut today i was watching a presentation about guitar recording and thinking about how it interesting it must sound a binaural recording of a live band, mostly i only see it being used for piano recordings.
>>
>>51919223
In terms of leak? a bit, bust most leak that is audible to others will be from open-back headphones. going from velour to pleather can change the sound drastically or so little so as to not be noticeable, it depends on the headphones and pads. in general the biggest change is going from something closed with tiny pads and then putting huge velours on them. significant bass and mids reduction. putting hm5 velours on my m40x killed the sound to the point where I could not just eq it back.
>>
>>51920336

so you want something cheap for use outside with a cheap player? IEMs. hje-120k is a good starting point, then step up to the piston 3, past that you're gonna want something in the $50+ territory which has too many options for me to just name one.

>>51921613
depends on the level of isolation. using something like an se215 sure I could see that, but a shallow fit IEM is going to give you more than enough awareness as long as you're not listening super loud. wearing a piston 3 is like wearing an open headphone in terms of isolation.

Damn these look nice, love the steel design and the varied tips. It looks to be more balanced than the SE215 but from some of the reviews I've read it still can hit the lowest lows with a good deal.
They're listed at $120 on Amazon, is there anywhere I should look to try to get them cheaper?

Thanks for the help

generally you're right but as someone who commutes by bike pretty much daily there are a lot of situations and maneuvers where you want more awareness, like changing lanes, turning into streets against traffic, entering alleys, on park paths, on bridges, when you have to use the sidewalk etc.
everyone's commute is different but I switch between different roads and paths and alleys and such frequently, sometimes I even have to cross against traffic on both sides because of how a path is placed. if you're just going in a straight line down the street it doesn't matter so much. but bikes are more maneuverable that cars or even motorcycles so you're going to end up using them in ways which are not really the "rules of the road"

>>51921862
if you want headphones with bloated, notched bass and uneven mids and treble there are better options. the m40x and msr7 are better sounding by far than the m50 or 70, they're also not overpriced like those are.

Not being a recording specialist, I'm not too familiar with the details. Most I've heard it used for is capturing ambiance: nature sounds, concert/room sound, and such.
I'm not sure how to approach binaural for research. Didn't you say you had neither dummy heads nor anechoic chambers? You would have to use microphones worn by real people starting out, barring other tedious measurements and derivations.

>>51921969
Ety MK5. Fit and cable noise can be a little off putting.
Fiio EX1 for a little more bass. Note the distinct lack of isolation.

>>

Just get something fairly neutral and EQ it to flat. Maybe look at the headphones some of the artists and producers you like use, not what they sponsor but what they really use.

Any Toys R Us pair of headphones.

Been using these (Superlux 668b) for several years and they still beat anything within the two digit price range and even some 3 digit ones. Literally the best purchase I've ever made in my life.

Do they need EQing at all? Never really thought about it.

like the v6 eq down the highs (I also use foam pads from the evo). add some sub-bass too. you could tune the bass to be flatter but then you would have got the 681.

>>51927879
>why does /hpg/ spend so much money on headphones compared to their IEMs?
Apples and oranges.
9mm typically sized drivers with something stupid like a dildo sticking in your ear. Or a pair of miniature sized speakers cramped on your head.
IEMs are better for obvious reasons.

Pick your snake oil, both can be expensive also. Tip: anything else above $350 is the limit of the diminishing point of no return, be careful and research before buying.
>>
>>51927879
because IEMs offer (generally) better sound quality value and the diminishing returns set in much sooner. also they can be lost or damaged much easier since most people use them for portable use. I have a bunch of IEMs but my daily driver is still the hje-120k because of the comfort and ease of use. for me anyways very high sound quality is harder to appreciate when you're walking down the isle of the supermarket or whatever.
>>
>>51925342
Those are on-ear headphones if you didn't know. For 30 dollars they might be a steal or they could be junk. There specs are the same as most shitty headphones, but that really doesn't verify anything. They seem pretty stylish and good for traveling so it's probably a good purchase if you're on the move constantly.

My Xonar U7 is showing signs of going kill it seems.
It takes good 15 minutes until is gets recognized by my PC, tested with two seperate systems so USB hub failure/driver issues can be ruled out.
When I plug my headphone into it before that time all LEDs just go out and is stays dead until randomly starting to work after some time.
This started happening from one day to the other.

XPT100 is slightly more clear, is more comfortable, is more neutral. It comes with a decent case, 2 detachable types of cables, and 2 pairs of earpads. V6 is the more fun of the two aka more v-shaped, a more compact headphone, and earpads on them tend to degrade over time as well.

XPT100 is clearly the better headphone but it's almost double the price of the MDR-V6. Though you'll probably have to change out the earpads on the MDR-V6 after a given time for new ones. Unless you don't really give a crap about appearance as they'll still function the same even if the earpads tend to look disgusting.

Would I say the XPT100 is worth double the price for the sound? No. Would I say its worth it for all the extra goodies and the comfort? Yeah.

I think it's a thing where a lot of people moved from midrange to the HD598s, and their midrange was a good midrange. So say they spend ~$50-$60 for their midrange, and then pay $100 for the HD598s. They might expect a level of improvement beyond their capacity to detect it. Because they're effectively at a wall, either by quality or by hardware. There's that point of sharp, sharp decline when it comes to cost vs quality.

-Power (Voltage*Current) isn't a concern since we do not normally talk about transformers, and is not fixed since the current varies with frequency. Normal devices operate on a constant voltage drive principle, and headphones sound equally loud only if they have identical voltage sensitivity given the input. SPL for Volt has meaning and is how speakers and headphones are measured, not SPL/mW.

-Batteries store chemicals inside a cell(s) that produce a charge. The voltage is fixed for each cell inside, but the charge will depend on the size of the cell. For a constant voltage, high impedance (opposition to current) is less consuming on the battery.

Other issues:

>Mechanical damping is much like the shock absorbers on a car.
His example is awful. Car shocks are damped springs with their own resonances being used to stop the springing resonances of the car, not purely resistive dampers. Damping is resistance, known mechanically as friction.

>Damping Factor
I dislike this phrase. This type of damping refers to the electrical opposition of the driver to motion: moving wire in magnetic field generates current opposite the motion. The impedance spike you see if from the driver motion being especially high at the mechanical resonance, more voltage is generated in opposition to the input voltage.
Damping factor doesn't tell you anything in particular about the frequency response deviation that occurs, or the driver's resistance to motion. You figure that out by figuring out the impedance of the components in the circuit, and the frequency shift alone will tell you practically everything you wanted to know anyway.

im serious. i just wanted to have you listen to some cymbal or treble heavy music and see if they actually dont sound like shit in comparison to some other headphones, like in flames - reroute to remain and day6 - congratulations both sound like a mess during certain parts on my x2

i agree that it doesnt really affect other things nearly as much, for example vocals are still pretty good, just some girls had a tendency to sound a bit unnatural. males almost always sounded fine though

I'm one of the anons who was mad about rattle and spiky treble. After I got replacement and EQed treble they were quite good. Few days ago I got an amp and now they sound amazing compared to very first experience with them. I'm still not sure if it was worth it but I don't think I could ever get x2 or hd600 for this price since only massdrop has decent delivery cost in shitholes such as mine.
>>
>>51931147
Yeah did an eq in peter APO eq to try and identfy the same "problem" in trebles, but they they just sound fine and might want to boost 15-16.5k area a few db I you cant hear properly. Its your ears man, or some defect (wtf wat ink problem?)
>>
>>51933079
DT880, shp9500 and modded 518s, so yes Id assume theyre pretty neutral
>>
>>51933270
>>51933285
Also I exclusively listen to rock/metal a.k.a guitar and drums as main, and theyre fine. I still hear sound up to 20khz so must be that, since DT800s trebles are earingingly harsh and loud trebles to me.

wtf thats plebetier 192kbps, 320 is where the symbals etc sound normal. Sound liek absulute garbage on the beyers too...
>>
>>51928286
Why the fuck would you go and buy the worst amp you can? Woo Audio is literally a joke in the STAX world. Return it/sell it and get a good Gilmore amp at least. Also port mod the 007.
>>
>>51933456
Ok I listened to them both. Bad quality audio. I listen to 320 or flac only, symbals sound perfectly normal, 10 times better than shp9500, 518, dt880 though so theres that. Hard to say but they sound present in good quality songs, not like noise.
>>
>>51933456
>>51933526
um, the whole 320 thing is for the dated mp3 senpai. even as low as 128 will still sound very good for aac, with 160 hitting virtually transparent. 192 is overkill. besides, that doesnt change the fact that the same file sounds completely fine in all my headphones/speakers except the x2 where the treble is a mess.

i mean, i suppose it could be my hearing, but id blame the headphones first. i might say i have a bad pair, but i returned the first pair i got for the same reason, and the next ones do the same thing.

reroute to remain is a 142kb opus encode from a flac file that i ripped myself. the difference wouldnt present itself so heavily like shown in these headphones
>>
>>51933593
Well they sound like dogshit, and my 320 and flac files with similar fast paced drumming sounds fine and natural, don't know what to tell you buddy, it's not my hearing at least.
>>
>>51933639
i agree, they sound like dogshit on my x2. the rest are fine, and you say they sound like shit on all of your headphones? give me a high quality song of similar type then where the cymbals are not failing you on your x2, and i will see how it compares on my x2 and everything else

are you talking about the files in >>51933420? I've just listened to them on my X2 and the cymbals sound messy and chaotic. I strongly doubt that it's due to the headphones, because it's a problem of sound definition/detail, not FR, then this issue must be due to either a low quality music file or to a bad mastering.
>>
>>51933807
No, just buy them and let yourself be amused by their amazing sound

>>

sounds pretty shit on my SR850s yea
>>
>>51934064
well i havent heard that specific song on the x2 yet, as i said here >>51933972, maybe the cymbals arent the same frequency that the x2 would usually sound chaotic to my hearing. sigh. of course the amount of layers of points of failure make this difficult.

i know that at a "reasonable" volume, i can only hear to maybe 17k, so it could be me. i just dont think that explains why the same exact files sound okay to me on every single other thing i own, which leads me to believe that i got a bad pair... but it was 2 different pairs doing the same thing. what are the odds? maybe this is why amazon has that "something wrong with our inventory" message? i got it around that time.

i wonder when >>51933827

hey guys, should I get my son (16) a pair of superlux hd681, hd668b, or some takstar hi2050?

They're all about what I want to pay, ($50) and I'm fairly certain he only cares about them sounding nice for music. He doesn't game and he doesn't record anything, just listens to a bunch of alternative, folk, screamo, noise, rock, etc. He's taken a liking to borrowing my senn 600 and I want to get him a decent pair to go with the laptop I'm co-buying with him for christmas.

Your thoughts guys? His sisters hate hearing his music so isolation and comfort are both important (he currently wears his earbuds all the damn time)
>>

Oh yeah you're right. Okay if you want true HD surround sound gaming with epic bass and positional audio so you can increase your k/d ratio tenfold you should get a... Xonar DG(X).

It will give you those soundcard features like virtual surround and it's pretty cheap. AD900x doesn't need an amp in the first place so you will be fine.
>>
>>51934877
I'm not sure I even play anything that would use virtual surround. Or watch anything that would.
>>
>>51934908
I actually owned one and I thought the virtual surround sounded so fake I never used it. It won't make the headphones sound magically better so research if the features are something you are interested in.

I suppose you could use it as a DAC in the future if you decide to get beefier headphones. The SPDIF output is the most enticing thing about it to me. It's up to you.

Babby's first headphones, what buy?

200 eurobucks. Going to be using them with a computer. Something big to surround my Dumbo ears and closed so that I can drown out the sounds of wife bitching and moaning. I listen to all sorts of things, but not a lot of bass heavy stuff so ignore that requirement,

>>

I'd go with the takstar hi2050.
Also tinnitus is a very very serious matter if he likes his music loud, you might want to show him some websites which talk about it cos once your ears are fucked you can't enjoy music the same way again
>>

not crazy loud, i just meant he doesn't want to be hearing his sisters talking if he has his phones in. also might not be as big of a deal with more quality headphones.

then say he wants isolation instead of loud music

that pretty much throws open headphones out the window, look at the takstar pro 80 maybe if you can scrap together some extra

people who bought the 598 in BF were fucking retards who knew nothing about the headphones they were buying other than they were recommended by /g/. people actually came in here complaining it didn't have as much bass as m50. the 598 is not bad, if they didn't want something that sounded like that, why did they buy it? because they don't know what they want and have no idea how to evaluate headphones, they just blindly buy things based on recs, which is why people bought m50s too.

you want bassy? high end closed is harder to nail down than open. I would say it's better to avoid that price point, it's kind of a no-mans land where you'll only find particular, colored stuff, like the new massdrop fostex. best closed headphones are usually cheaper actually, like PM3, msr7 for neutral, hp50 and mad dog for warm, srh1540 for a bit bassier sound. no need to buy an special amp for any of those. if you're going to spend that amount anyways tack on some speakers or some open headphones as well.
