I think the main reason for a smaller keyboard is that you maintain the functionality of a full size by putting features you don't use that much in the function layers. This means you get more desk space and a keyboard which is easy to transport. There's also the aesthetic factor. The dark HHKB looks like pure fucking sex.
Though I'll be getting a realforce TKL sometime soon, can't live without my function keys.
