For example, I want to save images on 4chan (SFW and NSFW) but I don't want my roommate to accidentally find them.

There is an app called "Hide It Pro" or something like this. It lets you hide all your selected photos,videos,gifs...
Also it has a diffrent name and icon in your app drawer

If you hide them deep enough somewhere, you can just shove some nomedia files in the folders. Nomedia files prevent apps from seeing the other files in the directory, and should do the trick to hide your shit as long as your roommate doesn't go spelunking too deep in the file system.

Why not just make another profile? It sandboxes its storage, and you can password protect it. So essentially you can even install apps and save stuff completely isolated from the default environment.
