piece of trash written in pascal and reliant on 32bit libraries so basically same as proprietary stuff like steam and skype

all just works, linux is a joke, open source is a joke as it kills good software and every small project usually ends up dead and deprecated. same thing with the file picker preview, nobody really cares so it's still not fixed.

open-source is the cancer /g/

by the way gui is convenient to browse to content of an archive with hundreds of files and just extract a select few to check their content.

How so? There was a release on 2015-07-09, as well.

And a good file manager has that support.

Didn't know winrar exists on linux.
Also just right click it, it usually built in.
>>
Am I supposed to know what peazip is? RAR isn't necessarily better than 7zip. I only use unrar for those rare cases when I need to decompress somebody else's files. There are plenty of GUI front ends on the Linux side. You didn't spend very long looking before you decide to shitpost.
>>
>>51890720
no there was not, you are refering to the arch linux package date like a true retard, if you check https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git/tree/trunk/PKGBUILD?h=packages/xarchiver you'll see that source package is v0.5.4 which was released on 2014-09-28. my point is there are multiple projects but most of them are not under active development

>>
>>51892117
You can use either view, less, cat, your favorite text editor on the archive to view the content.

When you extract it you just specify the file.

tar -xvf archive.tar filename
>>
>>51892160
It's not convenient to extract then view the contents of a compressed archive?
>>
>>51890654

No it is not, it fuctions and works perfectly. It's just very well programmed so people have a hard time figuring out how to make it better.
>>
>>51892171
how does using cat or less on a binary file produce any usefull output ?
>>
>>51892160
>>51892188

>>
>>51892209
Depends on the file. You might need a specific program to list contents of certain proprietary archives, like .rar requires unrar.

unrar -l archive.rar

This lists the content of the .rar archive.
>>
>>51892188
no it's not when the archive has 4000 files and I want to browse through it to make sure all is ok and open a few files to check them. with winrar I can simply scroll through the contents, select a few files randomly and drag them to a browser to open them.
>>
>>51892248
yeah, i know, same goes for tar, 7zip, etc
but
>You can use either view, less, cat, your favorite text editor on the archive to view the content.
still doesn't make any sense except for view, and _some_ test editors
>>
>>51892259
why the fuck would you brows through an archive and open files to check if they are ok ? thats what checksums are for...

to check the content of the file obviously.

IS THIS GUY BAITING ME OR?
>>
>>51892399
that's why all distro are only a list of checksums, I mean that's all you need to reconstruct the original data right
>>
>>51892421
You don't use checksums to reconstruct data. If the checksum is wrong, then you know your data is wrong. This means you can throw away your compressed file because it's now worthless. You cannot reconstruct that data.
>>
>>51892188
I think you mean the thing where you open the file and then pick stuff out that you want. But sweetie, the file has then also been unzipped completely. It just looks like it has not - and it is displayed in the ram instead of written on the disk so it can quickly get removed when you close winrar or w/e.
Remember how your PC always freezes a little when you enter the extract window? ;)

Ark is the gui.
It combines all types of archival software.
Why should someone who is specialized in compression algorithms have to make a shitty gui?

I always find this funny that people think something is deprecated and stamp it as "not working" when it didn't have updates in the last year (or even the last two fucking weeks).
Ahahahah idiots, I knew some programmers that just changed their Version-Number on their website and released the same fucking thing. In the patchnotes was something like "patched internal function xyz, now more stable than ever".

then install midnightcommander ("mc")
This thing works in the terminal (for winfags read "u can use putty")
and enter on the archive. There you see all containing files and can manually extract them.

But as all the others said, we hope you know how to use checksums.

There are people on /g/ who can open a terminal, and extract the archive faster than you right click, and click extract here

If the data was created wrongly, though, and for that wrong data a correct checksum was calculated, verifying checksum will tell that checksum is okay, and you will miss the fact that data is wrong.
Maybe you should not participate in those discussions if you can't even understand a thing so simple by yourself.

>with winrar I can simply browse through the content and ctrl+click 2-3 files per day (first check done) then drag&drop to opera and I have all the files ready for second check

same with MC. It really is exactly the same, yes you can use your mouse if you want too.

I just tried and mc crashed, it doesn't handle password protected archives. second I'm pretty sure it cannot open multiple html files in a web browser.
>>
>>51894309
I understand know what you do. You doubleclick the file in winrar, winrar extracts the file to your temp-folder and gets opened in your browser. Sooo ok mc can't do this that easily without doing some work around it. (i.e. writing a stupid little snippet)
My protected archives open without any problem. With right-click it is possible to select multiple files. Anyways, I see now that mc can't help you with what you want to do with just setting it up. Sorry anon.
>>
>>51890424
Fuse and gvfs.mount support mounting archives as regular directories in nautilus. You don't need to use the scary command line.
>>
ITT: OP points out a major flaw when commonly used open source software has more functionality than its linux counterpart.
Raging Linux fags try to justify it by saying windows users are casuals eye.

Well how about this. If it is an open source tool why can't both versions have the same offerings. Both command line and GUI. No, they can't because people who develop for windows are realists and people who develop for Linux are autists.

It snot very deprecated, is it? Reminder that the shell OSX runs on is ancient
