You guys will probably hate me for asking, but I've done a bit of Windows ricing and now I'm thinking about using linux on one of my chinkpads. What's the best distro to start with if I've never used it before?

Not asking to be spoonfed, just a nudge in the right direction.

I'm this guy: >>51885106

Most things work out of the box. You can install chrome & libreoffice.

sudo dnf install http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-23.noarch.rpm

then install vlc and such

And then you'll have a linux machine that can do everything a windows box does, and just as easy
>>

its great if you buy alot of stuff from amazon, or use their tv thing often

i spend easily 2500$ a year on amazon stuff, it tells me how much i saved with prime shipping, and without the 100$ investment of prime each year, id be spending about 650$ on shipping

so i saved 550$, and i get prime tv and shit

>>
>>51885365
No.

You've got it all wrong.

We want to encourage newfags with how EASY it is to get onboard linux these days.

Then, when its already on their computer, and is EASY to use, they might get bored now and again and decide to open the terminal and write little bits of shell.

They they close it. Use facebook. Watch Star-Trek. Do their normal people things.

Then they have a day where they get bored again, and decide to open the terminal again for no other reason than because it is there.
They play around. Write more shell.

This cycle repeats every week, and next thing you know, people are learning scripting out of passive interest. And the majority of the population becomes at least somewhat familiar with how to write short oneliners to automate some of the most rudimentary task.

The point is:
You won't get the year of the linux desktop by talking about how powerful it is, or convincing users it is hard.

You'll get the year of the linux desktop by showing users how EASY it is to use these days. And the power-user features like the bash scripting language are just an added bonus.

All of the people who I know who got into linux soon enough got rid of it because they couldn't play their favourite video games.
>>
>>51885654
It is not.

If these last versions of fedora had been out 10 years ago (and I had known it would be so easy to use), then I would've gotten into linux so much sooner.

I think most people would switch to linux, if they knew how easy it can be, just because even the normalfags are afraid of Big Brother nowdays, and people would probably appreciate a free system where you don't have to pay $200 for windows, and then pay another $80 for Office or whatever.

If most people could know how EASY linux can be, they'd switch over no problem.

----

Focus on RECRUITING new users to linux first. Recruit them by selling them on the things they already care about.

We can focus on educating everyone, and making everyone a UNIX-philosophy spouting shell wizard later.

Get the people first. THEN make them good at it.

I try to sell everyone I know on using linux. And I don't show them my bash scripts to do it.
I show them the UI. I show them how nice gnome looks. How popular applications like chrome and "word" work just the same on fedora as they do on windows.

That's how you convert users. Show them how sleek and fast and easy to use it is. Mention the extra security as icing on the cake.
Wait till they've been using it for a while to start trying to mention how they can use bash to automate shit.

You don't ever try to sell shit to your friends. (even if its free)

You can mention it to your friends, but never push.

You sell stuff to strangers; not your friends.

You know, sometimes I wonder how true some of the stereotypes really are.

I mean, you can't all be fat, basement-dwelling neckbeards who watch anime all day.
It is statistically improbable.

But when you guys just post anime-image after anime-image, I start to wonder.

I literally shave every day, almost completely without fail, just because of you guys.
I mean, I skip every now and then, who doesn't? But 99% of all days, I shave. Literally because if I start to see even a little bit of growth, I start thinking about the neckbeard stereotype, and realizing I don't want people to see me that way.

You guys make me a clean-cut person.

But seriously though. What's the obsession with anime? Why are SO MANY of you guys SO OBSESSED with anime?
Is it really just that funny? Are the plots really just that involving?
What is it? Because I don't get it. I mean, I did watch Death Note. And I thought it was kinda interesting and cool. Especially with all the religious references. Even the dude's name "Light", was a reference to "Lucifer" (morning-star), which is the name of the angel that became the devil. The whole series was kinda like a big reference to Lucifer's fall from grace.

So I guess I understood it at least once. But most of the time, I don't get it. I've tried a few different animes, and Death Note was the only one to ever catch my interest.

Sorry I'm basically blogging today. Guess I need to go outside or something; I didn't socialize enough today.

Highdpi desktop monitors are fucking expensive. Expensive to the point at which I don't really see the point in buying one, since I use my laptop on a daily basis more than I use my desktop.

The only reason I have my desktop is for muhgames (which I don't even really play anymore), since you can't exactly shove a 290x into an ultrabook (and even if you could, I wouldn't want to because I like having a battery).

In my experience with Linux, there's no RIGHT answer to your question. You'll have to play around with some distros and get a feel for what will work for you.

That said, Arch has been a great distro for getting to use a lot of the fundamentals of linux for me personally.

Ok. Been using Linux Mint for a few years now but to be honest, I've always used Cinnamon or KDE when I was using Ubuntu. That said, can desktop masters pull back the curtain a bit for me?
What ia the difference between a "DE" and a window manager?
What is a tiling manager?
Are the 2 exclusive to each other?
Is a DE always more resource instensive than window manager?
What can a DE do that a manager cannot? And vice versa?

I currently have stock cinnamon mint on a lower powee school PC. Looking to cut down on resource usage and reduce load times of certain things. Last is pure cosmetics. How the hell do I get ris of the "titlebar" that is on every single program window in Linux? Like at the top of the windows will be a bar that says the name of the program and the current file/thread that is open? It seems redudnant and takes up screen space.

I am currently working around it by using a certain DE addon that makes it as small as possible, but it also takes the min, max, and close buttons with it so Im using custom keybinds to do all those things. On the forum it said something about editing "metadata" file?

As I've said I've been using Linux for a little while so I know the basics. Updating/upgrading from terminal. Installing and removing applications from terminal. Make, make install, etc. But when it comes to ricing, big or snall, I have no idea.

Help would be appreciated /g/ents.

You aren't making yourself 'seem cooler'. Being a bland as fuck normie isn't 'cool'. It's just how social interaction works: you are supposed to convey an unassuming image to those who aren't within your social in-group. News flash, but lying is an integral part of participating in human society, and if you don't like it, sucks for you since no one will change for you.

This shit isn't fucking complicated; even if you don't understand social interaction, it is not hard to just observe and then mindlessly mimic.

Nobody fucking gives a shit about you, so if you make shit up to make yourself appear to be a well-adjusted member of society, then the hairdresser literally will not remember you the second you walk out the door, and you will have smooth social interactions with them. This really is not hard.

A DE is a package of a window manager plus a theme and usually some apps installed as well.

KDE comes with its own terminal emulator, konsole, along with a window manager named Kwin and a QT4 framework theme style.

LDXE uses Openbox as a window manager, Openbox being what most of us use standalone.

A tiling WM is something like i3, which tiles your windows in laid out positions for good management.

Usually a DE comes with a login manager (aka a display manager), so it's as simple as installing a different DE/WM and then switching to it when you login. For more functionality look into xinitrc.

Why would I go through the effort of framing my hobbies and plans in a way that would be deemed as socially acceptable to some random person I don't give a shit about when I can just give them a canned normie life that works just as well and takes no thought on my part?

>>51887920

What kind of hole is lying to the wageslave who cuts my hair going to get me into? Worst case scenario is that I fuck up lying to them and make a discrepancy. If they hate me for it, I go have some other wageslave cut my hair.

Either way, lying is a skill, so the more you do it, the better you get at it, and the less you have to think about it to make effective lies that are also true enough to not fuck you over ever.

It's because they're providing a service to you, and humans have this really shitty tendency to dislike you if you are an autist, and to then do a shitty job at what they are doing if they decided that they don't like you. Thus it is in your best interest to pretend to be a normie so that you get decent service. Again, if you don't like it, sucks, since that's just how society works.

Her name is River tam and sometimes in anime and manga girls get delivered to the main character's house in a box and anyway one could imaging,t hat if River Tam was in a game like Mirror's Edge, it might be called "River's Edge" and then someone might accidentally misspell it as "Rever's Edge"

It's a fairly conceptual joke desu
