They counted Surface shipments to a selected set of re-sellers and extrapolated that over the entire market. They called it "sampling".
They then excluded all Apple Store sales - either bricks and mortar or on-line - so they could compare like with like since Apple Stores didn't sell the Surface.

The problem was, because of cellphones, all the companies rushed and put their money in the mobile market, because it was expanding like crazy. The thing was, after a while, people realized you can't really be that productive on a phone, aside checking emails. So with tablets all trying to act like big phones, the surface came out and acted like a computer instead.
Basically, you can do more on it than an iPad or android tablet.

Laptops are nice but I like having the pen for my personal projects and note taking and something where I can just throw the keyboard to the side and use it purely as a tablet for netflix or youtube.
I interned at MSR over the summer and I don't think I would claim that Microsoft won "the tablet wars". iPads still dominate both in mind and marketshare (although I can't think of any good place to point for metrics either way).

I can't justify the cost of the i5 Surface Pro 4. Potentially considering the base model.
I'm considering a refurbished Cintiq Companion 1 - it's cheaper, and better for drawing. Does an Ivy Bridge i7 offer much longevity? The CC1 doesn't have the slave display function, so once the processor is worn out, it's useless. Not sure if that's an issue I'll actually encounter though.
