Linux needs a makeover because all DEs look fucking terrible.

There needs to be a crowd-sourced effort to collect just a fuckton of money that actual professional digital design firms can compete for. Android has Material Design. Microsoft has Modern UI. Apple has an entire fucking Industrial Design Group to make their things look sleek and they all have ways of forcing compliance.

Until someone works on amassing just a fuckton of crowdsourced money for some actual professional design firm to make a design language for Linux to use, as well as promoting and rewarding applications that utilize it, we're stuck with OSX, iOS, Windows, and Android all making Linux just look like it's some shitty uxtheme.dll hackjob from 2004.

Many computer users experience a version of the parent company's design language every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Linux which is widely used today is often called "hideous", and many of its users are not aware that there is no design language, developed by professional designers.

There really is a beautiful Linux and some people are using it, but it's just a small part of the users that do, and not without extensive effort and pre-existing specific knowledge to do so.
>>
>>51870803

As an intern, I would sometimes mark off that time, but only because it was the norm at the place I was working. I wouldn't have done it if they weren't so heavily entrenched in using Outlook to determine people's availability.

>>
>>51876533
No, it literally renders your desktop at a higher resolution and then downscales the output to your physical resolution. Using your screenshot as proof; You have a 13" rMBP which has a physical resolution of 2560x1600. Your screenshot however is 3360x2100 since you're using the highest scaling option.

There's this thing called employment. Most employers get very upset if you don't follow their schedule or fail to take your break.

If you're an hourly wagecuck then you basically have to take your break because they don't want to pay you extra, and you usually have a set time.

Salaried office workers that can take lunch whenever tend to do what I do: I set an alarm on my phone so that I don't work through lunch because I'm engrossed in a project. I'm paid for 55 hours a week, I'll be goddamned if I'm ending up with 56+ hours worked at the end of the week because I forgot to take a break. That's working for free, nigga. Fuck that.
>>
>>51876598
>>51876649
not him, but can someone explain. so using this scaling I see picture related. "looks like 1920x1200" is the highest available option, but the panel is 2880x1800... I'm feeling cheated out of pixels here
>>
>>51876726
I just explained the scaling. I even linked to a better explanation.
If you use the 1920x1200 option your desktop is rendered as if it were on a 4k display. The output is then downscaled to your native resolution. Yes you're losing pixels, but you still get quite a bit more detail than a low PPI display.
>>
>>51876652
No problem anon.

I don't use Arch myself, but I ran it for six months to see how much of the /g/ hate is/was legitimate, and pretty much all of the old anti arch memes had some basis in fact, but that's the only one that still crops up sometimes because people don't update their packages and sources enough before installing new software.

Hide it. Even Tiger had shit like quicksilver.

>no real start menu
A start menu? Really? Even in 2005 people didn't use that shit. This is /g/, not /v/.

>constant top menu bar
It save screen space by having one menubar for everything versus one menubar per application window. How often do you actually use the menubar anyway? That's what hotkeys are for. In fact even in Tiger you could bind hotkeys to menu items without any extra software. Pic related.

Sounds like Linux Mint.
Well, just install it in a VM, grab the packagelist, the themes and settings, and copy those over to a new Ubuntu LTS install.

There, you have a non-shit elementary look.

Used an iMac (c2d too) with 8gb of ram, and 10.9.
It was a pain even for simple development.

The ram compression came handy, but the Core2 was too slow to handle things smooth.

It doesn't even have consistent icons and you call this good? Fucking eyemurdering white everywhere, window shadows like 100 fucking pixels wide, LIVELIEST BLUE WE COULD FIND highlights, top bar has to inconsistently be transparent THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, search bar HAS TO HAVE AN ICON RIGHT NEXT TO CENTERED TEXT even if it just fucking floats there unbalancing the entire thing, system preferences gotta have dem exchanging darker and lighter stripes because this is totally a narrow table where you need help keeping your eyes in the same line, ...

I could go on and on and we haven't even gotten to the part about how much usability they threw away to get to this crap. Only regret I have is that Gnome are being a bunch of tards and copying this shit, but unlike you I'm not forced to use it if I want my crap to work correctly.

If you do a job where it's easy to lose track of time and get too into whatever you're doing because you're actually good at your job you'll understand the need for notifications for basic things like this.
Also it can update you status to tell people you're out of the office or away on lunch so it's useful like that.

However you're probably a fat basement dwelling neckbeard or a self-absorbed child who has no concept of actual work.

Linux is definitely first. Package managers can remove everything. You can never easily uninstall an application on OS X without leaving files it created all over your hard drive. Even on Windows they have a standard uninstaller that will remove created files.
>>
>>51876720

Is this more of that ridiculous "work ethic" you hear about in America, or is that you specifically taking on extra hours of your own volition?
>>
>>51899357

To be fair, all models have GPU acceleration, Apple just started cutting costs by shipping every model below $2,500 with Intel integrated graphics. Even when they are powering an 1800p display.

OS X itself runs beautifully on my desktop, never a hitch. It's the hardware division wanting low end hardware while the software division wants high end graphics that causes that bad experience for Macbook owners.
