Crunchbang was my first experience with linux, and I use bunsen labs now. I think it gives a pretty good out of the box experience, I have no other points of reference besides ubuntu.

crunchbang is dead, arch is work but it always does what you want, lubuntu just werks, lxle is not as good as lubuntu imo
