Does anyone know why microsoft is pushing win10 so hard ?

cause it seems fishy
>>
>>51856371
Cause they want to take over the world.
>>
>>51856371

What kind of stupid question is this.
>>
>>51856371
They want everyone to use Windows 10 because it's very cloud-oriented and cloud services is where they make the most of their money these days. With universal apps becoming a thing, maybe Windows Phone will stand a little more chance with universal apps and continuum.
>>
>>51856395
How is it stupid ?
I've never seen anyone push anything this hard and that makes me uncomfortable with it
>>
So they don't have to update older systems, they stopped supporting xp a short while back as I recall. At the least they might kill 8 and 8.1 as that was terrible, but I guess people might try to stick with 7 as long as they can.
>>
>>51856378
the only correct answer. they even gave out free upgrades and made it rolling release to entice people

Because data harvesting and corporate agenda to control the population.
>>
>>51856420
It's stupid as fuck because obviously a software company wants you to use their software. It's being pushed hard because they don't want to have to deal with stupid fucking Peruvian and Brazilian asshats who refuse to upgrade from XP since they're too stupid to figure out how to pirate.
>>
>>51856420
They want as many people on their new platform as possible to, hopefully, sell apps and services to them.

The don't make money on Windows 7 or 8 after the initial sale, they are hoping they will be able to extract more money from the users with Windows 10 during the life of the product.
>>
>>51856440
Do you even get a product key for upgrading to 10?
>>
>>51856574
Yeah, it's tied to your hardware. There are some tools out there that will let you see it. Google
>>
>>51856371
How did Windows get popular in the first place?

They offered free training to businesses for the office suite and how to run a windows domain. Then they started charging for it. Now your left with tons of people who know Windows and your whole infrastructure relies on it. Your going to pay for it right?

Same thing with Windows 10, people will be used to it and just keep using it. They will start introducing more payment schemes for services.
>>
I've read that Microsoft will start forcing Win 10 updates soon. How does that work? I thought it was only going to be free for a limited time in 2015.
>boot computer
>Windows 10 screen
>hello, it's time for your upgrade!
>you can't say no this time, there's no going back to 7!
>btw that's gonna be $130
>>
>>51856663
Back to win 7/8 i guess
>>
>>51856663
It's free until July 2016, plenty of time to force Win10 down everyone's throat.
>>
The NSA is forcing their hands. Because the NSA can not directly spy randomly anymore due to 4th amendment. But the 4th don't apply to corporations who can spy on whoever they want if they put it in the terms and conditions, which microsoft has. Also CISA makes it legal for NSA (and all other companies and groups) to get access to the private info with just payment.

Microsoft are threathened and can earn lots of money by having everyone on windows 10
>>
>>51856371
It directly synchronizes everything with NSA's Utah childporn-storage where countless agent number unos jerk off, their dicks saturated with their rabbis' STDs to your contribution.

>>

>>
>>51856444
Nice that Microsoft, who's always wanted nothing but money, now is nice enough to care about their consumer's experience, more so than creating revenue from their product.
>>
Windows 10 is so shit that it finally made me completely change to GNU/Linux. The updates almost always brought new bugs and blue screens. Plus the problems with my video card and blue screens related to the Nvidia drivers or Windows 10.

If I want to go back it will only be after at least one more year. And it will probably still be shit.
>>
>>51856371
it's because they're going to force paid subscriptions next year
>>
>>51857038
From a business standpoint, good consumer experience = repeat customer.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/02/16/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did/
They try to be more subtle now since that clearly freaked the guy and probably everyone else out.
Not entirely sure how it makes profits for MS, they're not exactly a retailer or anything, and I don't think many average consumers buy their products all that often, just every few years if they replace a computer or something, corporations probably don't care much for that kind of consumer experience.

because they spent a lot of time making it and just want people to appreciate that, regardless of whether or not it's a good os
>>
>>51856371
I think some dude at the top level suggested they should become the new Apple as everyone is trying to do (have your own marketplace, same OS on every device, vertical integration basically). As far as I've seen all the features w10 brings are for this purpose and to push user away from system and get them close to their online tools.
>>
>>51857391
Apple is behind MS with the same OS on every device thing, cloud storage is hardly unique to apple or anyone.
>>
If you are worried about spying from win10 I hope you're well aware that the same diagnostic tracking was pushed as an update to win7/8.
>>
Same as always, they want as many people on the latest to avoid issues later when support for old versions ends.

The difference now is that the 10 upgrade is free so they can push it much more.
>>
>>51857609
There are programs like Spybot Anti-beacon and O&O ShutUp that can disable all of the known telemetry and tracking.
>>
Windows 10 is a rolling release, so I think it will be harder to keep your version. Earlier versions will have support until 2020 and 2023. I am a little confused because Windows 10 is "supported" until 2025.
>>
>>51856780
This is the correct answer.
Not illegal when you've actually given then permission by signing the EULA.

It's going to lead to this, though

I would compare Windows to smoking
Only that in this case, they teach you to smoke at school, and offer you cigarettes in school / college for free, so that you can smoke at home
And every now and then some enlightened dude will try to quit smoking, and most likely fail to do it in long term.
>>
>>51857703
You can't sign of your constitutional rights, it doesn't work that way, even if it is working that way currently someday it's going to be corrected by Supreme Court.

But overall it's still the case, we're being watched.
>>
>>51857759
No-one can give away constitutional rights and no-one can take them away.
They're inalienable by definition.

Of course you could just pull an NSA, lie about it, ignore them, and hope that no-one gives a fuck.
And when no-one gives a fuck you go 'hah got away with it'
>>
>>51857743

In this situation, the weird thing is that I've quit smoking myself but still find myself delivering cigarettes to friends and family because they refuse to acknowledge that it's possible to quit.

>You can't sign of your constitutional rights, it doesn't work that way
Sure you can.

>Waiver

>The voluntary surrender of a known right; conduct supporting an inference that a particular right has been relinquished.

>The term waiver is used in many legal contexts. A waiver is essentially a unilateral act of one person that results in the surrender of a legal right. The legal right may be constitutional, statutory, or contractual, but the key issue for a court reviewing a claim of waiver is whether the person voluntarily gave up the right. If voluntarily surrendered, it is considered an express waiver.

WiNSA 10 EULA
>Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary.

This could easily be interpreted to mean that it's "necessary" to collect data on everyone

>>
>>51857944

>>
>>51857881
I did not know that. But can companies ask you to waive your rights in exchange for providing a service? I do not think so, because if that's the case they can strong arm you into accepting anything.

For example they may ask you to waive your right to form a union when applying for a job. Right for union is not a constitutional right but it cannot be waived under law. So in an agreement how can you waive your constitutional right so easily while you can't waive your rights provided by labor law?

I think the page you are referring to refers to plea bargains, where you actually waive your right to be judged before jury. But in that case you are actually admitting guilt omitting the need for a jury anyway.

I'm not certain on this subject I need to read more, do you have any good reads?
>>
>>51857944
Pathetic ridicule attempt is pathetic.
Next comes the tinfoil accusation, huh?

Knowledge is power
The more someone knows about you, the more control they have over you.
Who has the power to influence you most? The people that know you, that's who.
The power to influence your opinions and beliefs could easily be used to influence public opinion, elections and government policy.

>>51857973
You can even waive your right to an attorney.

>>

I think this is the situation for majority of us.

I think that this situation could be improved if Linux Foundation made some "normie convincing material", which could be used for some sort of viral marketing. But instead they make those cringy "World without Linux" videos.
>>
>>51857973
Pretty sure that opens themselves up to legal actions so basically no. Otherwise they could just say, 'to use our service, you must become our personal assassin.'
>>

> only scratching the surface of what one can do with Linux

Too bad there are lots of xorgs broken by random updates and inability to use some hardware at all (like certain wifi chipsets) under that surface.

is there some theme that makes ubuntu look like windows?

i want to install ubuntu on my gf's pc, and i don't want to teach her how to use linux, she doesn't have time for that shit
>>
>>51856371
It's unified platform. MS wants to unify their OS, saving money on support and giving devs a reason to write UWP apps.
With UPW Hololens, WP and Continium can work, without them they're stuck with same Win32 apps, most of them written like shit nad break everything. UPW apps are sandboxed and have less rights, but more features. so OS becomes more secure even for your grandma
>>
What if I only dual boot w7 offline mode to play some old single player games? Will it store my activity and send it later?

I actually plan to pirate Windows 10 in 5 years when it resembles a functional and polished OS
>>

>WiFi chipsets
Weird that you'd mention that in a windows 10 thread, because the other week I "upgraded" to win10 and my WiFi adapter stopped working.
>>
>>51858125

X.org mostly only breaks if you fell for the arch meme or bought a GAYMEN gpu

wifi chipsets, well fuck bitchcom. Non RMS-tier distros will usually even download the non-free drivers for you and intel cards are like $10 anyways.
>>
>>51857661
There's also GNU/Linux or, as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux.
>>
>>51858148

Lubuntu comes with LXDE, it looks pretty windows like.

Pic related is my desktop (moved the bar to the bottom just for this shot.) There's a quick start menu just like windows has with categories like "accessories", "internet", "office" etc

My mom did not like Unity (standard ubuntu) but thinks LXDE is fine.

once 99% of PCs run Win10 they can finally drop all support for XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and lay off half of their staff that deals with those antique technologies
>>
>>51856371
Google is harvesting data via Android and all their web services.
Apple is harvesting data via iOS and all their web services.
Why wouldn't Microsoft do the same?

These 3 companies are advertising companies, they profit a lot from knowing:
-who you are
-what you like
-what you'd be willing to buy

You're both a consumer because you keep buying their merchandise and a product because the services they provide are generally "free". None of these companies are a good choice. If you use one, you use them all.
>>
>>51856371
Microsoft very badly wants to switch to subscription model in all their software fronts. *free* Windows 10 is basically a trojan horse to accomplish that. Once Win 10 stops being "free" you can expect to having to pay monthly to use your own fucking PC.

That's a fact. Wangblows has the market cornered on normie shit because of "le gaems" and "it just works bruh" same as with Apple.

We'd need to develop some fucking kick-ass games and make them Linux-exclusive to provoke people into at least dual-booting Linux.

But then they'd realize they actually need to learn how something works to make their Wangblows games run on Linux and leave while calling us autistic.
>>

> in 5 years when it resembles a polished OS

You mean when it's become even more effective at spying on you and restricting your ability to use it?
>>
>>51858290
If you use windows 10 there absolutely is always something spying on you.

MS is full of NSA back doors and it will never let you disable its ability to harvest your information for money.
>>
>>51856420

Are you telling me this is the first time you've seen Microsoft trying really hard to peddle their software? You must be underage or just stupid.

>>
>>51861117
But, now it's known.
The people want it to change.
Most in congress want it to change.
Legality being challenged.

With WiNSA, you actually give them permission, eliminating any legal problems.
>>
>>51860127
Will that finally be the year of the Linux desktop?

Or will the normies just swallow it and continue to call linux users autistic?
>>
There's a few reasons. The Windows Store is a big one. It's pretty much free money for Microsoft. They also include certain advertising in the Start Panel in Windows 10, which obviously means more money with more users. And finally, they want everyone on a single platform that they control.

There are ways to mitigate their spying on your internet, namely encryption and VPNs. Neither of this will help you if you're a target, but it'll give you some privacy.

So because they see everything on the internet we should just allow them to look in our hard drives as well?
