Well, the point of the class was to teach SE practices, not coding. 133 and 165 will be more of the same with group projects.

Being a minority helps. On a more serious note, take a lot of leaderships positions or create your own. I created my own organization to help inspire kids in my local elementary schools to go into STEM. >Javascript (ofc we learnt HTML5 + CSS3)
>C#
>Java

Business side was like 5 weeks of business and then nothing.

After graduating I failed to land a job and am now learning to develop shit on my own. I also got myself into the Linux world and fell for the /g/entoo joke. I work as a part-time bartender and am stuck with my SO in this piece of shit town with now opportunities whatsoever.

On a side note, the degree I am currently studying is being phased out. It's not a good option to stay with it, so I've been given the option to transfer into their new General Engineering or I can go into Electronic Engineering.
General is almost the same as Electronic, but I get $20k in scholarships plus 6 months of work placement. The down side is it isn't accredited with Engineers Australia yet, but Electronic engineering is. The guy organising it is pretty confident it will get accredited (he practically bet his job on it).

I'm not really sure what to do. I don't like the idea of general engineering, but the only real difference between that and EE is the name.

There's a network engineering course that's compulsory for all EEs and CEs, someone at RMIT drank the "everything will be web!" koolaid and decided to include PHP as the backend language, since PHP is liek so popular. It's only touched on though.

The joke here is that the associate degrees make an embedded webserver out of C, which is actually how it might be done if everyone decided to use UDP or TCP for everything. PHP is only popular... Because it's popular.

It's just another case of bad technology being taught by old people with outdated ideas.

School was good until a few years back when they got a new president. Now it's just a bunch of hipsters and SJWs wanting equality while also taking pot shots at Seattle every chance they get (because hating Seattle is the dankest meme ever in Tacoma).

>inb4 private religious school
When I was applying, they offered me the most financial aid. The only other options were UW Seattle (expensive as fuck at the time because Tim "Fuck Everyone Who Isn't Me" Eyeman's regressive tax-based funding laws) or WSU (literally a party school). I also came in with a weak math background and was still allowed into the CS major (aka no application process - UW would have eaten me alive).

5 years in and minimal loans because of the aid. Just got to finish what I started at all costs.

I have friends though. I'm not grasping for more connections through anonymous websites.

I'm also not saying that I'm categorically not interested, as you seem to conclude. I felt I was pretty clear in saying that I'd need to know beforehand that this is actually a community of people I might want to know in an offline setting. Most of /g/ seems to be a bunch of losers and tech hipsters, and while I'm totally open to the possibility that bay area users are generally different, I'd like to have some hint of that before I show up in person and potentially find out that you're all guy fawkes mask-wearing neckbeards with cheese puff stains on your clothing.

You seem overly eager to meet new people. I meet new people often enough as it is, and I'm comfortable asking that we all demonstrate that we're not weirdos before meeting up.
>>
>>51852842
The truth would end up being that bay area /g/ posters are a bit different from all the rest.

i almost flunked out of high school; went to a community college, then a UC for my undergrad, now at stanford for my PhD.

it's definitely not impossible to get to stanford. you just have to figure out what really motivates you before you start aiming for that kind of place.

I believe that. It's just that that goes against the intuition based on statistics, so I think it's not unreasonable to make an irc or slack channel or something where we all still have some measure of anonymity, then if we turn out to be a generally cool group of people and want to meet up in person, someone can just suggest that.
>>
>>51852864
Yeah I missed graduation in high school by 5 elective credits, ended up with a 1.2 GPA. got my AA, got a 3.1 GPA, Getting my BS with a 3.3 gpa.

Yea, no shit, out of the 11 assessments I've sat this semester, only one has been written correctly and it was soo vague at that, the rest were just broken...

When I applied, it was for both the MS and PhD simultaneously, and right out of undergrad. I'm not sure how that affects the value of this response.

I saw two approaches. The first, which my department at MIT uses, and most of the professors strongly dislike, is to take the application at face value and accept/reject before meeting. The order they consider things is roughly as follows:
1. Do we have funding for what this student indicates interest in for next year / do they bring their own funding?
2. How good are the letters of recommendations?
3. How good are the essays?
4. Are the GRE and GPA scores not red flags?
The application is also quite tedious, perhaps deliberately to reduce applicants. I had to list off all the textbooks I used in undergrad and for which classes for example.

The other approach I saw used is to not accept until a face-to-face interview happens. I am cripplingly shy around new people, so I do poorly in these. On these, the interview usually has the highest impact on the decision. The ones I went through were pretty much generic job interviews, though, so preparation should be easy.

can i ask where you got your connections? I still have 2 more years left. And in what area of programming your getting interviews for?

there are no european universities that have any status in the world except for oxford and cambridge.

i'm sure there are very adequate universities in the EU and UK, but calling them "master race" uses up some excessively superlative descriptions right out of the gate before you even get to universities that are actually considered good.

I'm not sure when they were last ranked first, but it wasn't as recently as when they switched to Python. They're also not ranked 10th; I only said that they're "barely ranked top 10", which puts them somewhere in the top 10 depending on whatever controversial and ultimately meaningless criteria for assessing entire universities that you subscribe to.
>>
>>51853417
There is literally no point, your school is just very very behind the times.
>>
>>51853405
so in the shitter they're probably about to lose a tenth of a point next year and only be 7.7 ahead of stanford
>>
>>51853430
Its brown though, we seem to have a bretty good CS department. We have three intro sequences though. One teaches object orientated through java. The other functional with racket. And the third (accelerated) is also functional through pyret.
>>
>>51853396
MIT is carried hard by their non-cs departments. The electrical portion of the major is still top class though.

Gerald Sussman himself said that a significant part of the reason for switching to python was to "hook undergrads on computer science"
It's fucking pathetic that students are getting into this major to make a quick buck, instead of being truly interested.
It's also fucking pathetic that MIT has caved to this new paradigm in student admissions.
>>
>>51852656
anon, you are the only one here who i wouldnt want to talk to irl. Who the fuck do you think we are? We are all just normal students in university who happen to browse the same forum. Is that really so hard to believe?
>>
>>51853362
I didn't know this is a university "status" jerk off thread. Your university's status won't help you with your own knowledge. It also won't help with any real job where they actually expect things from you.
>>
>>51853465
>It's fucking pathetic that students are getting into this major to make a quick buck, instead of being truly interested.
this is a convenient argument to make until people in cs and stem in general make a point to shit all over non-stem students for their impracticality with their field of study.

a department has an inherent incentive to hook students. if they're not compromising their rigor (and there's absolutely no evidence here that they are, just very specious claims), then that's their prerogative.
>>
>>51853455
IMO Brown has one of the best CS departments in the country (disclaimer, I am not a student there)
I met professor Shriram; is wife is a Professor at my school, and she brings a lot of similarities from brown to my school, which I'm super glad about.
AFAIK we are the only two schools in the country that teach functional languages first, because introducing and teaching CONCEPTS rather than LANGUAGES is a fantastic thing.
>>

Generally it is the people who go into STEM for the $$$ who shit on other students about impracticality. Students who get into CS or STEM in general because they actually ENJOY what they do are far more likely to realize that others might feel the same about chosing to be an art history major for example, and not give them shit for it.
>>
>>51853543
I go to WPI. I remember taking the accelerated course (same one you're in!) my freshman year. It was a fantastic experience and I'm really glad I ended up at WPI where it's even offered (though I'm a bit salty that I didn't even apply to Brown)

Exactly, these "rankings" you pull out your ass are retarded. I've worked with MIT students and grads, and all the younger ones have their heads so far stuck up their ass because of their school name. They just circle jerk about how well they did in high school and about 'muh robots'
