What's the point of building a PC with an expensive i7 and gaming graphics card if you're going to install Linux on it?
>>
Bragging rights and VMs.

>Powerful CPUs are only for le gaems
Do you know how much a Quadro GPU costs?
Gaming GPUs are a cheap alternative to do GPU based computing.

Linux has some good games.

Also, game development and other GPU-based things, like video editing.

Most people who use Windows have a pirated version you know, Linux at least offers out of the box support for almost anything you'd need from a pc.
>>
Why would you throttle your hardware performance with something as stupid as a Windows OS?
>>
>Install Linux for freedom
>Install Windows for games
Then you just choose which one on boot. It's not that hard.
>>
>>51843270
theres no point, on linux you use amd fx 8core cpus if you are poor or xeons if you have money.
the gaming nvidia cards are just nice because they have awesome drives, support multiple monitors and cuda while not having to pay the price of a quadro

Developers. Although development would usually benefit from a Xeon instead of an i7. Also, gaming graphics cards either do the job of something like a Quadro or the developer isn't requiring intense graphical processing. Additionally, there is an increasing number of games that are supporting Linux.

I like the idea of Linux but it needs to be better than this. Xubuntu worked okay on my laptop but my desktop it doesn't want to. If we can just get a good, nonshit distro that would be great. Maybe Mint is good. Either way, Windows 10 took 20 minutes to have up and running with the latest drivers and updates + my programs. Works fine, even though I don't like some things about it.

I wish we had some kind of miraculous way of installing both Windows and Linux in the same machine. Just imagine how nice it would be to restart your PC and easily swap between operating systems when we need something specific from one system or the other...

You're only stuck using mpv because you use Linux.
Windows users have the superior MPC-HC with madVR.

OpenBSD takes like 20 minutes to install and manually install a DE/WM. It about as easy as installations come. Don't bother checking it out though. I'm pretty sure you'll hate it. It's not meant to be for entertainment, and the very idea of performance is a joke to the devs. It is a nice desktop OS to get some shit done without too many distractions though, or to play around with an actually learn how Unix works from the inside out.
>>
>>51850646
They'll never figure anything like that out. They can't even figure out fucking dark matter, and there's a lot more of that shit around than gimped baryonic matter.

>>non-retarded keybinds
Agreed. mpv keybinds are MPlayer legacy. Not even the mpv devs like them and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who isn't a Linux veteran who does. Fortunately, you can rebind all of them.

>>no OSD blocking your view
What else is it going to do in full screen mode? Don't tell me you watch movies in windowed mode like a pleb.

>>doesn't break on ordered chapters
Yeah you've been spamming this a lot in the mpv threads. I think it's time for you to tell us what, specifically, you mean by it. mpv plays all the ordered chapter files I've tried with it. Good job spreading FUD though. I'm sure madshi appreciates it.

>>don't need to sit in a 24/7 help thread just to get it to work
mpv threads are mainly people learning how to use new features. You might not be familiar with how this feels since all major Windows multimedia projects are stagnating at the moment.

>I'd pay $100 for Windows just not to use mpv.
>he pays for Windows
>>
>>51845860
In 3rd world countries there's computer stores that ship their PCs with pirated windows and no one gives a fuck. In those same countries, a huge percentage windows users cant pay for legit windows because the cheapest license literally costs almost double their monthly salary, and they wont bother actually buying something you can easily pirate when they're saving every penny to feed their family.

Try guessing now in what kind of country most of the population of the world lives.

I have a 10 year old notebook, just installed the latest Debian on it a few days ago.
I literally cant install windows on that notebook anymore because the manufacturer of the onboard network/WiFi cards went bankrupt, their support page went down a few years ago and you cant find their fucking drivers anywhere else.
Even when you could find firmware for those obscure as fuck network cards, it would take me a week of searching and downloading and installing wrong drivers and "driver detecting software" to actually make that shit work.

Meanwhile: Any linux distro will detect the hardware and automatically install everything it needs in the OS installation.

Pretty sure people buy expensive stuff so that when they need the extra resources they're actually there.

Tell that to every HPC cluster in the world. Besides CAD programs every single decent engineering program has a linux port. If you're doing numerical simulations and your software can't run on linux it's basically worthless.

You can run Windows in Linux. You can even use your $500 gaymen card in the VM.

It has almost indistinguishable performance to bare metal, and if you have VT-d + kvm there's very little overhead.
