1- does the android apps auto update, or I have to manually download apks once its updated?
2- hows the battery life for medium-heavy use ? like browsing internet for 4 continuous hours ?

1. You get a notification when an update is available, at least in the Amazon Appstore and Snap (i.e. Play Store for BB).
2. Battery life is fine. My Passport lasts for 2 days when I'm not using it much and usually lasts for the day with medium-heavy use. 4 hours of browsing will definitely be ok, but of course you will lose a large chunk of your battery %.

Oh and regarding the Android apps:
You'll find many websites showing you how to sideload the apps (i.e. downloading the APK and installing it). This is not necessary anymore, as you'll have the Amazon Appstore preinstalled and can also use other stores (Snap = Play Store, Opera Store, ...)

I am rollin' with the bold 9790 and will hold onto that until my carrier decides to shut down BIS service, I may get a 9900 later if i feel like buying one. it has a comfy mail client, whatsapp and BB maps which is pretty average but still i can find my way with it.
i don't think hardware being old is an issue as long as OS and main apps run smooth.
