So, why did you choose to be a cable monkey...I mean an IT Professional, when you could have gone to school and earned credentials for a real profession in Computer Science.
>>
>>51835433
because math is hard and i get paid good enough for minimal effort
>>
>>51835433
Maybe I will someday. But for now I'm not at the maturity level to handle more schooling. Hell, I'd admit I may never be. For now, it's just not me. I like IT, if I can even call my job that.

shiggity

How does one become an it in California
>>
>>51835433

I'm going into Electrical Engineering purely out of interest. All I want to do is build/fix computers for people, though.
>>
>>51835433
I didn't. I'm a Civil Engineer.
>>
>>51835487
>not being an actual statistician instead of a data scientist, the janitor of mathematics
>>
Why do CS majors think that developers aren't part of a company's IT division?
>>
>>51836071
because they aren't

one is the "IT division"

the other is "help desk"
>>
>>51835433
>implying computer science isn't just a dumbed down version of computer engineering
>>
>>51836071
Because they were never able to get an actual job with their joke of a degree. They have no idea what they're talking about.
>>
>>51836222
s/computer engineering/math
half of CompE is stuff that CS has no business in.
>>
>>51835582
Look at contract work
>>
>>51836222
idiot, they are completely different
>>
I took a 2 year IT Programmer Analyst course in Community College, and out of the 4 people from High School who went to University for CS, I'm the only one with a job related to my field.

Having a CS degree is only helpful 20 years down the line into your career to avoid running into glass ceilings, they're of no use starting out.
>>
Because getting paid $200 to punch down a couple rj45 keystone connectors to cat5e cable that the electrician already ran is the very definition of e z moni.

I have my CS degree and do IT work. umad OP?

>I wasted 4 years of my life getting a CS degree where I could've gotten a job in IT straight out of high school

naw
>>
>>51837121
>muh helpdesk
>muh A+ certified

kill yourself pleb. That would literally only work if you knew someone in HR or something. Nowadays you have to tick all the checkboxes, and the first one is a degree.
>>
>>51837153
good thing I don't live in california, every entry level IT job here only requires A+ cert
>>
>>51837173
Where do you live, fucking north dakota?

Anyone information assurance here? I'm thinking about heading that direction in the next year or two. Advice? Thoughts?

>>
>>51835433
the more technical and hands on your job, the more money you make with the least amount of stress.

if you factor in stress, time and amount of money spent to obtain a cs degree, you end up with an overall loss if we assign weights to each factor.

so a food vendor may be economically and socially better off than an engineer.

think about it
>>
>>51835433
CS is literally a meme degree that retards on /g/ endlessly try to defend while their degree rots and they remain jobless.
>>
why do people on /g/ keep arguing that CS is a meme degree when the problem is low quality institutions accepting virtually everybody into the program?

i didn't study CS in college but my college is known to be one of the best in the US for its CS program. literally thousands of CS graduates work at google/facebook/microsoft/amazon straight out of college.
>>
This entire thread is just people defending their own profession and saying any profession that isn't theirs is meme-tier
>>
>>51836755
haha don't talk shit. I have have 17 job offers, 17 unconditional of my degree classification and I have 4 months left to go.
Computer Science = Jobs.

Anyone on this board who tells you otherwise is too socially retarded to pass an interview and blames it on their degree.
>>
>>51837556
>Computer Science = Jobs
nice saturation faggot. also CS is literally a degree for the socially inept.
>>
>>51837573
What do you do? Math, 100k starting? Of course memester, of course. ;^)

Construction degrees are a meme.

Daily reminder that this IT/CS meme only applies to Americans.

emmmm no, it is because you are lying to get a response from someone.
>>

alright buddy.

Why not doing both. Currently doing DevOps for industrial "embedded" systems development and getting paid a lot more with no stress. (Hell a dual 16-core Xenon system is not something I would call embedded but hey it's nice to work with)
Also doing some EE sidework for legacy MC68030/MC68060 and Powerpc based embedded systems.

if you are living of a salary, you are doing wrong

In belgium you can start IT and end as master CS without extra years. There is no dedicated master IT so unless you just stop studying after bachelor you will have a CS degree. Fucking unfair, no one knew beforehand. Here we are with all our extra chemistry maths materials classes, feeling smart but in the end we're just fucked royally.
>>
>>51837556
>17 job offers
>job offers
>offers

Off yourself you unemployed faggot.
>>
>>51837556
bullshit. The degree is absolutely meaningless if you can't demonstrate you're skilled at what they're looking for.

You could've been a liberal arts major, but if you've got professional experience developing software and can show you've done a good job, you've got way better chances at getting a job than some mediocre CS faggot who has only written unit tests in the one software engineering class he took as an undergrad and whose code looks like an unreadable mess of nested conditionals.

Yeah I have an associates in Computer Networking Engineering Technology - Don't let the word engineering fool you, it's basically a fancy IT degree with a focus on networking. But I make $42K a year as a network admin.

I want to go back to school though, but honestly I'd much prefer or, at least think I'd prefer, to go into something like industrial automation or something like process engineering, not sure, but I don't feel "done" learning.
