Here's how you prepare
Learn the Linux OS, in and out. You must know EVERYTHING about it. Follow development, keep track of all the updates.
Then, when he dies, you're able to take the kernel and continue development on it for yourself, so that you don't have to worry about others mucking it up for you.

I don't think Hurd will ever surpass Linux, at least not with computing being what it is now. Microkernels may be more secure and stable, but the performance cost is so steep. There's no point in putting that kind of emphasis on stability when proper Linux servers never crash anyway. The way I see it, the cost in getting hardware to match performance would probably outweigh the cost of justt having redundant servers. It's even worse on desktops, since having ultra-secure, ultra-stable kernel, don't matter for the vast majority of people.

Honestly, I'd love for BSD to get more attention. I'm considering moving to OpenBSD, at least on my secondary machine, so I can test how well Linux emulation works for games. The problem as it stands now is that very little non-FLOSS software runs on BSD, so it's practicality is limited for normal people. If I can get better performance on Linux games than I did on Linux, and passable performance emulating Wine (I severely doubt it), I'll jump ship immiediately. I'm not going to stick to Linux if there's something clearly better. It's just for the time being I don't think BSD is better since I have no proof.

Fuck Unix and fake unix, let's have new stuff gaining traction. The fact that BeOS never took off due to MS's shenanigans is an outright crime.
>>
>>51837966
>I don't think Hurd will ever surpass Linux
Well, not with just a couple of devs at debian even caring about it anymore. Ideally, it would get into an efficient state if it had the powerhouse of the linux kernel devs behind it, but it's clearly never going to happen. I'm guessing with proper optimizing and a well oiled team of devs, the performance hit from being a microkernel would be negligible.
>>
>>51838372
Is there any need or demand for something new though? What use cases aren't already suitably covered by what's available now?

Arguably BeOS was very ahead of the curve 15 years ago, but I feel things have plateaued somewhat now.
>>
>>51837966
OpenBSD is not about performance. You want FreeBSD for that. OpenBSD is about security, and code correctness. It makes for a nice desktop to get some work done too, but it's not going to ever be a gaming/entertainment OS.
>>
>>51838500
Security. We need something like an open-source version of Midori to replace Linux.
>>
>>51838372
>>51838500
Yea. I mean, whatever's best. Only reason I'm staying on something Unix-like is that porting stuff to Unix-likes is probably trivial compared to going between Windows and anything. If something significantly better comes along, I'll switch to it.

>>51838449
Hurd, the BSDs and to a lesser extent, Linux all suffer from the network effect, where their development or lack thereof is based on a feedback loop. Linux is only gaining traction these days because more people use it and vice versa. So unless we get a very vocal community for Hurd and BSDs, they'll never be important and get the support their backers desire for it.

Anyway, my understanding of the problem with the microkernel is that the different modules take many more CPU cycles to communicate with each other. I don't develop software, so I'm not certain to what extent it could be fixed. I'd ditch Linux in a heartbeat if there was something better. But unfortunately for Hurd, "better" includes having software and being functional. Maybe it'll see a resurgence in the future after Linux dies, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

>>51838510
I'm going to try multiple flavors of BSD and see which works best for my purposes. I only listed OpenBSD because "MUH SECURITY." If the performance hits in games are small or negligible, I'd use it over another BSD unless something like FreeBSD or Dragonfly has way more features. I hear hammer is fucking awesome.
