I have two desktop PCs that are used for gaming. PC 1 has:

>Xeon X5650 @ 4 GHz
>AMD R9 270
>6 GB RAM

PC 2 has:

>i5-2500K @ 4 GHz
>GTX 770
> 8 GB RAM

When playing the same game on each of them with identical graphics settings, PC 1 can play at a smooth 60 fps. PC 2 cannot; it drops down to 20-30 fps or worse when things get busy. Both have the latest motherboard chipset drivers, GPU drivers, and BIOSs, yet the stronger PC seems to have FPS issues.

Any ideas where to look for finding the problem, /g/?

>Asymmetric ram
>Memeon kek5650
im still surprised this setup can beat the second one tho
>>
>>51823731
6 GB is triple channel so not asymmetric.

Yes, it makes no sense to me that the faster machine (in terms of IPC and GPU power) has lower FPS.
>>
graphics drivers up to date?
>>
>>51823601
Bro thats only one frame/ever.
>>
>>51825197
Yes...
>>
>>51825405
Where is your monitor plugged in? Into the motherboard or the graphics card?
>>
>>51825334
that's the joke you tard
>>
>>51823601
Not enough RAM
>>
>>51825440
Into the GPU. The iGPU is disabled in the BIOS and doesn't appear in Device Manager.
>>
What game(s) have you tested anon?
>>
>>51825539
GPU temps?
>>
>>51825468
gosh im glad you explained that to me
>>
This might be software related, switch a harddrive into another (windows should be able to handle it), and check the fps then.
>>
>>51825623
OK whilst playing Dungeon Defenders where the FPS was dropping to ~20, here are stats:

>GPU temp: 44 C
>VRM temp: 61 C
>Max memory controller load: 50%
>Max GPU load: 55%
>Memory used: 500 MB

Nowhere near maxed out.
>>
>>51825841
This is running from a brand new SSD but has been the case before that SSD was installed also.
>>
>>51825983
yeah the temps look fine... I'm running out of ideas.
>>
>>51826086
Max GPU load on PC 1 during the same game is 51%, so basically the same as PC 2, yet it has constant 60 FPS.
>>
>>51825468
Actually there is no joke since it looks like it's a thumbnail froma youtube video.
>>
>>51826164
Maybe it's a vsync issue and/or your monitor's refresh rate is set to 30fps in the windows settings?
>>
>>51823601
PC 1 is the stronger system and thus has higher frame rates. I'm not sure why you expected otherwise.

The GTX 770 is a little bit better than the R9 270, but the rest of PC 1's specs make up for it.
>>
>>51826762
He is saying that pc2 has higher framerate than the other..
>>
try swapping the gpus around and use a fresh install of windows
>>
>>51827283
This, so you can actually compare and see if it was gpu related
>>
>>51827150
no he isnt you full on goober
>>
>>51826199
VSync is enabled but monitor is set to 60 Hz.

>>51826762
The only time I'd expect PC 1 to have higher FPS is in a CPU-limited game that uses 5+ cores. The games we play are not like this.
>>
>>51823601
Some setting on your computer is restricting the power of your system. You're going to have to play around to find out what but i couldn't tell you from a description alone.

The same thing used to happen on my computer with a gtx 770 classified, but after redoing a couple things the problem has since passed. I don't really know what I did either. Uninstalling some things and reinstalling others may help or it could be some kind of restriction on the motherboard

We have almost identical systems. I'm sure whatever your issue is, when you you figure it out you'll go "oh god damn it"
>>
>The issue is the horribly aging 770.
Perhaps a bios setting that keeps the card in power save mode? Besides running x2, is it stuck at x1?
>>
Considering crimson is the better driver at the moment, that's not surprising. The optimization of the game you're playing could also be more AMD biased.

Swap the cards and see what happens.
>>
>>51827700
I definintely want to try uninstalling the newer nVidia crap and just install the drivers clean, that might help.

>>51827882
There are almost no GPU settings in the BIOS. However, various applications say it's running at x16.
>>
>>51827956
Yes definitely try older drivers for the nvidia one. They gimp it so you buy the newer ones.
>>
>>51828271
Tried a complete clean install of the drivers and also turned off some Windows power saving stuff. It seems to have helped a little: FPS now drops to 30-40ish in heavy scenes.

Still nowhere near what it should be though.
>>
>>51827518
It could be that vsync fucked up, try without
>>
>>51823601
>nvidia
>old cards support

pick one

Triple buffering.

if that doesn't work, undo your overclocks. Test at stock.
>>
>>51823731
>implying that that makes a difference in gaming

What motherboards OP? PSUs?

get some testing software to make sure its not hardware fault

cpu: gets prime(combined power intense) and intel burn(12 high) test, prime is cpu lighter but really hammers the board.
And the i5 2500k should get 100gflops on normal at 4ghz.
gpu: try 3dmark, it will also inform you of where a limit might be hit.

Finally, I know my amd video cards with vsync 'could' get constant 60fps but insane input lag (3-8 seconds)
>>
>>51829905
shit, was talking and did not notice that it failed to crop... well thats awkward.
>>
>>51829722
Tried without VSync, doesn't help.

>>51829834
That requires third party software, right? Haven't used it in a while.

>>51829867
>PC 1: Asus P6T Deluxe V2
>PC 2: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
>>
>>51829972
seriously, dude, get your shit together
if my wife or cps saw that i'd never get to see my kids again
>>
>>51829905
what am i supposed to be looking for in these tests exactly?
>>
>>51830038
computer crash or missing performance from prime/ibt.

While using 3dmark, you can find what the cause of fps drop is, cpu/gpu
>>
>>51830101
cool, thanks
>>
>>51823601
because Nvidia crippled the 770
im not lying, they ruined it on purpose
thats why the 290x now competes with the 980 instead of getting trumped by the 780ti
