Can we just take a moment to appreciate that CD/DVD's are dead?

Are they? I just burnt a dvd to install windows 10 on my new pc, and i booted void Linux on my old laptop with a cd.
Just because you don't use something doesn't mean it's dead.

Why didn't you use USB drives?

usb 3.0 flash drives cut the install time down to about 1/4th of a dvd

You know that's not true.

>>51820463
The laptop is really old and doesn't support usb booting, and for the desktop I'd have used my usb but I like keeping a disk handy just in case.
What better way to test the disk than to actually use it?

We don't all have kiddie porn to hide from the fbi anon. Not everyone is like you.

Then you should let me install cameras in every single room of your house. You have nothing to hide anyway, amirite?

They are still being produced and used. You are just a bunch of whining children who don't know anything. I bet that no one uses any of you, I guess that means you are dead.
>>
>>51820616
They're a pain for backups. Can't schedule them to happen automatically and reliably (unless you have a disc changer, you still need to look into somehow having one disc ready), they're easily physically damaged, and you have a lot of problems with knowing what is on which disc and/or efficiently using the space on discs.

Terrible backup medium, DESU. DVD-RAM is the very lowest I'd go for backups, and even that still has 2/3 of the problems.
>>
>>51820251
i like how we've had blurays for nearly a decade now and people still say "cd/dvd" rather than "dvd/bluray"
guess they really are dead

i for one still use dvd-r/rw's, not nearly as often as i used to though

i still have not used a bluray disc, nor have i ever owned a bluray drive, i was excited about 25/50G disks back in 2005 when my main storage drive was 80G, but by the time drives/recordables were affordable enough, hdd's got fucking huge, and i just didn't see much point anymore

I feel like bluray was doa, the only thing keeping it alive has been consoles.
My first bluray drive was the one that came installed in my laptop. My desktop uses a dvd burner.
I still use lots of CDs and DVDs, but I've never touched a bluray disk in all the time they've been out.

What you described are live system back-ups, for which optical disks are awful.

For static content, long term, secondary emergency back up, disks are pretty decent.

They are cheap, they last for ages, they are resistant to more hazards than HDDs, SDDs or flash. It's not something that everybody needs, but they have their use cases.

Just because you don't use something, it doesn't mean it's useless. Even magnetic tapes are still in use nowadays.

Pic related.
>>
>>51820251
no because that means that hdd are next
>>
>>51820749
Blurays for movies because if I really like a movie I'd like to have a physical copy, and not have to download several gigabytes to get comparable quality.

That being said I don't like that they still put movie trailers.

I have a handful of blurays that do that and appreciate it.
>>
>>51820453
but why? you can boot from usb since like year 2000
>>
>>51820780
>For static content, long term, secondary emergency back up, disks are pretty decent.
Even for that, regular discs are only cheap, not really decent.

I've had quite many old discs stored in the dark literally fall apart (delaminated on their own, irrecoverably broken) after a decade already. Parts of the foil just came off, no way around it even with the most careful handling because no later than when they're in the drive, it just rips off.

And more got wrecked because they're so easy to scratch or otherwise damage. You think they were safe in their regular DVD cases inside transport boxes, but no. they're not. They fall out and scratch. Hell, sometimes the inside of the cases holding them in place breaks over time, and those prong things then scratch them good.

Not a good experience. And they're also very annoying to work with if you want multiple copies and PAR files to check / restore them, they're slow, too.

Stick with NAS unless you're poor, keep your backups hot, verify... really.
>>
>>51820859
once you burn the cd/dvd it's always there to use, usb you always end up overwriting it and need a pc to make the usb you want to use
>>
>>51820859
The laptop is from 1999, was shipped to Australia January 2000.
>128mb sd ram.
>466mhz celeron.
>2mb ati gpu.

It has a single use 1.1 port.
Does that sound a device that supports usb booting?

I checked warez cdr's I burned in the mid 90's last year and they all worked fine.

idk why my cd/dvd drive is always dusty af
>>
>work at shit company (I like money)
>company policy is to disable usbs

inb4 it is harder, I am aware of the extreme skill required to burn a DVD and therefore the person will be smart enough to avoid a virus
>>
>>51820909
Oh, the majority of my DVD also worked fine. Some had unexplicable bit errors (did you check checksums), but overall fine.

You're still playing russian roulette with your data. It's not like I was able to buy "not broken in 10 years" and "broken in ten years" DVD+R. They just turned out to be that way. Randomly. Sure, with more incidence on some brands, but no way to know in advance.

Only DVD-RAM actually lasted reliably, but *those* are technically specified to be 30 year archival media with good tolerance even if they get scratched or such.

throw plop onto a floppy or cd, and use that to boot from the usb port

https://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/plpbt.bin.html

no native usb boot support from the bios needed
>>
>>51821327
I checked a few games and was able to unrar them without a hitch. anyways I'm not storing vital data, I don't really care if I miss a few games or tv shows in a few years from now. for vital data I use dvdisaster and redo a new disk every other month or so.
>>
>>51821365
oh, you can also put it on your laptops' hdd, negating the need for additional media to 'enable' usb booting
>>
>>51821368
That's different then.

But even as a media library where you can accept errors (bit errors in media only result in minor defects that don't matter much, usually), there's still the huge drawback of it being scattered over 1000 DVD or whatever. Too much work to manage.

> for vital data I use dvdisaster and redo a new disk every other month or so.
I'd guess this is workable, but again, more work than it's worth if you ask me. Never mind if you need to do it for 5+ devices and data sets big enough for 10+ DVD on multiple of those.

I tried my old data data cd for a music collection from high school (12years) shit ton ov scratches still works I can copy the files without an issue. Cd /dvd won't die for awhile Ima say 25 more years then the public will start moving away. But hey vinyl is making a come back again so who knows. Damn hip kids *shakes fist*
>>
>>51821467
It fits on a single dvd so it's no big deal. I have shit upload so cloud is not an option and I don't feel like wasting money on a NAS and RAID shit.
>>
I use the occasional CD to burn PS1 games.
>>
>>51821542
i'm going to get me a PSIO when i can

http://ps-io.com/index.html

basically a playstation flash cart (run games from an SD card)

they just recently finished development, been following their progress for ages
>>
>>51821573
Neat. Shame "retro" flash carts are so god damn fucking expensive it's ridiculous.
>>
>>51821599
it'll be the only option eventually, besides emulation
those cd drives don't last forever
>>
All data on CDs is error corrected, whereas most file systems on HDDs store no such information. Take that hdd-fags!
>>
>>51820607
>Not having music system with Bluetooth and USB, AUX support
>>
>>51821617
True.

Wish the Chinese got properly on board the retro flashcard game so it would be so damn expensive.
>>
>>51821617
also, the PSIO is pretty complex compared to most flash carts

most are typically just a basic flash rom with some software for a menu and a way to move data to/from an sd card, along with a bit of ram to hold the current game rom (sd cards aren't fast enough to run the game directly from on cartridge-based systems)

the PSIO emulates parts of the playstation cd-rom system on-board, and has an arm cpu and an /fpga/ to do so, the basic hardware is simply more expensive, not to mention the difficulting in making the software to make it work
>>
>>51821671
>sd cards aren't fast enough to run the game directly from on cartridge-based systems
speaking of this, the PSIO has the advantage here in that you CAN stream games directly from the sd card on a playstation, due to being a cd-based system, you only need to be able to sustain 300KB/s read (the playstations' cd drive top speed) and sd card random access times are better than cd (but not as good as a cartridge-based-games' mask rom)
>>
>>51821523
Ah, then dvdisaster is certainly quite good for that. If the DVD get augmented by a new copy every few weeks and have recovery information, not too much can happen.

My data set is just a bit different. Most of /g/ probably has multiple DVD worth. Even just anyone who does digital family photos and the like should have quite a lot of data with modern cameras, pretty soon...
