Does anyone know of good sas controller that can support any sata drive and not just a select few?
why get a sas controller if you intend to use sata drives?

What are you talking about? A SAS controller is precisely for SATA drives.
LSI stuff usually doesn't care.
I've been using LSI controllers like LSI SAS1068 for consumer SATA drives for ages.

the only reason it's a similar connector is because it's designed to be backwards compatible with sata drives

Thank you I will take a look at these. I bought a Adaptec controller, it seems the controller works fine but none of my drives are detected. My drives are not on the "offically supported" list.

Just buy a $50-$80 sata controller that supports port replication. Are you planning to use the controller for high access speeds or just so you can attach more storage? If the latter, use the multiplier method.
Unless you're a data center I can't really see the need for an expensive $300+ sata/RAID controller
