Why install a linux distrubtion when you can just use it in a virtual machine? It's so lightweight that you can do that and still run windows...???
>>
>>51814353

If you have Windows installed, what's the point in running Linux? Name one thing you can do on Linux that you can't on Windows...

TensorFlow doesn't does run in windows. And if you want to do parallel processing when training networks with your GPU a VM will not work. This is why I'm considering actually making a linux partition

No way in fuck is that shit touching any system in my house. I don't even game much anymore, and AMD is actually improving with driver development. Intel stuff is ok for me on this Libreboot X200

because you can still get viruses and keyloggers through the less secure os you're running the vm in

it literally does nothing for your security, unless you never use the os you're running the vm in, and if that's the case, why even have a vm at all?

>>51814374
Use a tiling/composite window-manager. I know windows technically has these; but bug.n has obnoxiously non-intuitive shortcuts (that don't work half the time anyway) and win10's snap feature is so devoid of customization and autonomy that its hardly worth using. All other tiling wm I've tried seem to inevitably fall in one, or both of the above categories.

>field of work requires X software, which is only on windows or mac
>there's Y software, but it does not meet the requirements X field of work requires

either way what the fuck is the purpose?
>>
>>51814374

Let's put it this way - MSYS Bash is complete crap, and the majority of open source libraries have build scripts that depend upon a working version of Bash. It is actually easier to cross-compile for Windows from Linux, than it is to compile natively on Windows.
>>
Windows is a fine black box dependency on a selection of applications. But as an OS? No. I treat windows applications as I treat any java application, if I need it, I install the damn VM. If I don't, I save a lot of space and move on.
It is easier to have the usable OS as a base and then access the guest that the other way around.
Eg. Mounting ntfs under linux is a lot easier than mounting anything under windows.

Why run Windows on bare metal when I never use it? If I do need it, this is 2015, my CPU has VT-d. If I played gaymes I could pop in a GPU and dedicate it to the Windows VM

i'd rather not reboot into windows just to do a bit of work
you don't need 100fps to do work in solidworks, and renderings like pictured work just as quick, since it's done on the cpu
i'd do VGA passthrough but i don't have the hardware for it right now (only have one gpu)
>>
>>51816462
Wouldn't happen to have a good guide to setting up Xen passthrough would you?
>>
>>51819613
see >>51819549
i've looked into it, but haven't done it due to only having one gpu

so i have no specific/current articles to link for you
>>
>>51819634
also note that my screenshot is not something you can do with passthrough (that is, have windows in a window), because you're passing an entire gpu to the vm, so windows has complete control over it
the only way to view it in a window is via something like VNC, which scrapes the screen and sends it over a network
>>
>>51819634
>>51819665
I know, but still want to do it. Have it a installed, but haven't finished the setup because it means I have to go find another DVI cable where ever I put them. And because the info out there on it is somewhat shit for setup.

well, specifically the window in the forground is photoview 360, the fancy raytracing renderer that comes with solidworks

>>51819965
well... i mean, it's normally a lot of $,$$$
>>
>>51819989
solidworks is pretty easy to start with, assuming you're after 3D
i tried autodesk inventor for a while, which was also alright
i've been meaning to give solidedge more of a try, it looks nice

don't have any 2D suggestions, also note that i'm not really a professional at this, i've just been self-teaching/learning thing as i go for the last couple years, drawing simple-ish contruction machinery for a friends' business (such as the pictured screenbox)

can you do that with one monitor only or do you need two?
>>
>>51819989
autocad is the industry standard for plans drawing
it is possible to get it for free from autodesk
>>
>>51820095
you can use one monitor

most monitors have more than one input, so you can use both, one input per gpu, to use instead of a KVM, otherwise use a KVM, or worst case just physically swap cables
>>
>>51820139

>>51814374
Use your computer at a reasonable speed

Windowsfags don't seem to realise how fucking slow their OS is, it's the difference between an HDD and SSD
>>
>>51820246
All of them might hurt your brain.
If you know you won't use it as your profession, might as well start with freecad and learn that. All tools take a while to get used to so might as well use the one which isn't OS dependent
