i like duckduckgo and what it stands for etc but the results are just straight up worse than google, relevant information for what you search won't show up until you scroll like half the page down
i really want to use it by default but it just isn't as reliable and efficient a search engine as google (for me, anyway)

"bangs" do not make ddg relevant at all.
startpage is superior, better search results (directly from google), servers in the netherlands and they've been around for much longer. they also do not feel the need to advertise their services, unlike ddg.

OP here. You've convinced me, I'm switching to Startpage.
Incidentally, if someone wants to use Startpage but doesn't like search suggestions being off by default, you can get a link from the Settings page with custom settings enabled. Then you can use that link as your home page if you want, thus having search suggestions on by default.
