They're still great chips. I'm running an X3450.
You just have to keep in mind that they're the same speed as an Athlon X4 860k, so as long as you're not spending more for a Lynnfield i7 + a LGA 1155 board than an 860k + FM2, you've come out ahead.

I suppose my odd purchase would be that X3450/16GB 1U that I ... modified.

the more important question is, do you say wow every time?
>>

no aren't the i7s faster?

first they have more cache, hyper threading and can OC like crazy
>>
>>51781108
22 ausdollars per cpu.
Picking up 4 mobos soon, $100 for the lot of 4.
Now I just need 8gb ram per machine.
2 gtx 680s for $140, 2 r9 280x for $130 tonight.
Got a few spare hard drives lying around.

I'd say i did good, $65 for each cpu+mobo.

Also curious what other people are buying.

The i7s are definitely faster.
At stock they'd be between a haswell i3 and i5.

Once overclocked to 4ghz or higher I'm sure it'll be very close to an i5 4460, if not faster.

>aren't the i7s faster?
They're very close. Remember, the i7 is running at a 900MHz disadvantage to the 860k.

i7 860 will have a slightly better overclock, and with its better IPC it will go a little further, but they're still in the same ballpark.

nice. Those are some ridiculously stout PCs for the money.

>4Ghz or higher.
>On 1st gen i-series chips.

Surely you just, right? The majority of them were only able to get to ~3.8Ghz or so. I say this because I'm one of the unlucky few still on an i7-860 and can't get past 3.7Ghz even with overvolting, and have since removed any overvolting and settled for 3.4Ghz at stock voltages.

the i7 still have more cache, something that gives it a huge IPC advantage since it helps reduce access times.

also first and second gen i series overclock like a boss.
>>
>tfw bought a prebuilt "gaming" rig for $350 in 2012 with an i7 860
>still going strong

Shit motherboard, though, so no OC for me. Also have had to replace the RAM, hard drive, and GPU since then. The CPU was the only really good thing about this build.
>>
>>51782137
2nd gen overclocks like a boss. 1st gen, not so big of gains compared to 2nd gen, but still rather well.
>>
>>51782137
It's running at a major clockspeed disadvantage.
OC you're looking at a 24/7 one in the range of 3.5/3.6GHz, for a 700/800MHz gain. A 860K will be 4.2/4.3GHz, for a 500/600MHz gain.

i7 860 will come out on top, but it's not wrong to compare it to the 860k or the FX-6300.

Why do you people compare the 860k to the i7 860?
The i7 is better at stock and overclocks better. It also has 8 threads, not 4.
