I have an iphone 4 and "sense" that my music sounds worse than my desktop Xonar DX just because of the DAC. Is this another case of placebo?

I've had every iPhone since the 5 and honestly they're all about the same level of dogshit. Yes there have been minor improvements here and there, but none of them have been that special. As long as you're using the headphone out you won't actually experience the ability of the DAC because the built in amp is the limiting factor.

Amps are FAR more important than dacs(when it comes to speakers). This has been known for decades, low thd, snr, and damping factor are some key characteristics of a good amp. This is why old Yamaha amps are good

The iPhone 4-5s dac were ahead if its time. They had better thd, frequency response, snr, dynamic range, and stereo crosstalk than other devices for a while all the way up to when the Galaxy s4 came out.
The iPhone 6 was actually a step backwards and the 6s actually was a complete downgrade, with having audible hiss and noise and worse measurements. Meanwhile Samsung and htc have been leading the way
