Is there any reason to choose a 970 over a R9 390?

Optimization
Heat
Power (barely)
Noise

Many games are optimised more strongly for Nvidia than AMD so even though theoretically the 390 is on par realistically it won't be. That said, the general rule between the two cards is to go for the 970 if on 1080p or below, and go for the 390 if above 1080p resolution.

>>51766008
Noise isn't an issue with the Sapphire version but the rest are legit points. 390 does have the VRAM going for it though so if you're on 1440p or above the 390 may be better.
>>
>>51765991
Get the r9 390, trust me anon.
>>
>>51765991
R9 390 kills 970 i n every bench
>>
>>51766008
>>51766016
I've also been noticing that alot of games preform the same on both cards even though the r9 390 has better specs. Is it nvidia biased optimization or just because the r9 390 fairly new and hasn't had decent drivers released yet?
>>
>>51766034
I only say noise due to the card running hotter, in turn needing higher fan speeds
>>
>>51766043
This is true.

overclocking potential, once the 970 is clocked to ~1500mhz it becomes on par with a reference 980, even outperforming it in some cases.

getting an equivalent overclock on a 390 would require lots of extra voltage as they're already overclocked quite a bit out of the box, most 970s can achieve their max overclock WITHOUT a voltage increase

heres a review that compares an oced 970 with a 390x and a reference 980:

Bit of both. The 390 already beats the 970 on >1080p resolution but for the average gaymur on 1080p the 970 will always win even with better AMD drivers.

It doesn't get that hot actually.

970 is on par with 390 at 1080p, definitely not always better
>>
390 will have a longer shelf life. amd cards get better as they age whereas nvidia cards get gimped after the first year.
>>

>>silicon lottery

use google idiot, pretty much every gm204 and gm200 based card can reach 1500mhz core clock

>>killing the lifetime by extreme OC

no voltage increase means no increase in heat output or shortening of lifetime
>>
>>51766051
Sapphires heat management is strong enough that the fans rarely have to run that fast unless you're really peaking the card's capabilities. At least that's my experience.

My MSI 390 did so it's purely anecdotal

In averaged benchmarks maybe but in reality you'll have better minimum FPS on the 970 in the majority of cases.

No it doesn't.

get out of here with your shit driver support . If you're gaming on linux you're retarded.
>>
>>51766104
ahh righton, i have the sapphire one with the massive heatsink.
>>
>>51766106
why would a 680 perform better than a titan x

why would a 760 outperform a 970
>>
>>51766122
Depends on what you play. If you're a hard core CSGO and Dota 2 player performance is measurably better on Linux than Win. I'm not in that group though so I use Windows for gaming.
>>
>>51766132
Because Linux drivers are literal shit

>no voltage increase means no increase in heat output or shortening of lifetime

wrong, a higher clock speed does increase temperature.
Power loss is proportional to voltage and switching speed.

so it can decrease the GPU lifespan, but if you have a very good cooling solution in place then your GPU should last longer, so long as your temperature is within spec you should be fine unless you get a defective card.

I haven't found the need to overclock yet, I usually test out my newly purchased card to see how far I can push it then drop it back to its factory clock to which it was designed especially if it is a high end card to increase its longevity.

I only go balls to the wall once my card starts showing its age, for a few fps more its just not worth it especially if you are already hitting high fifties/solid 60 as I don't notice any discernable difference.

If you drop to 40s and lower on average then 5~10fps more would be nice.

>wrong, a higher clock speed does increase temperature.

i have a 970 and at reference clocks and my maximum OC (1550mhz boost) there's no measurable difference in temperature, i'd imagine the only place you'd notice one is if you were stuck with a reference cooler or an improperly mounted cooler.

fair enough

Linux doesn't just mean that your GUI and program support gets switched around. EVERYTHING IS BACKWARDS IN LUNX WORLD!

Go to bed.

This, I am never buying a nvidia card cause they fucked me so hard

better future drivers OP. games are the same.

Heat and power consumption are the same thing
>>
>>51766045
it's devs optimising for nvidia/not being able to use amd's tech
