I would not say ally. Google has inspired them that losing all their customization is the way to success. Google rolled them, owned them, then just has thrown them away after there was no need for Mozilla anymore.
What do you mean? FirefoxOS still exists, they've simply been importing it into what used to be simply a good web-browser.

If they really would want to do that as you say, they would reintroduce customization into the core, keep full themes, keep complex add-ons.

No. Mozilla is aping Google Chrome. All they do is to emulate Google in all possible ways. Recucing of features, implementing the almost same look, reducint quality of themes, reducing quality of add-ons.

Think about it. If they would still their own userbase, the geeks, they would add more customization, make themes more complicated, makes add-ons more complex.
The best comparison is if you take a look at Vivaldi closed source crap. It may be closed source crap, but they show what you do when you want to support geeks: Enhancing stuff, they added tons of features to an almost non customizable browser.

Opera was once fully customizable, they wanted a more simple userbase, as they have seen that Chrome is leader in market share and dumped all their features.
And to your first question: Google dumped them. Not the opposite. So they had no choice than to look sooner as planned for other investors.
Do you believe that a powerful company like Google would Mozilla let go that easily? Of course not, once in bed with Google you only leave it when you are cast out or dissolved.
