No home server thread on catalog.
Now, what is /g/ without home server thread?
It's nothing!

So let us begin new home server thread with proper OP image.
Post your racks, towers, routers, raspberrys, switches, anything that you happen to have.

if it's ever stops being sold out, is a pi zero fit for my torrentbox/ftp fucking around needs?
Anything else in the pricerange <50 that would do a better job?

currently have some shitty hp xp laptop for it
>>

Try to look for deals on used hardware.
You can find something really nice for $50 if you're lucky.

These are all remote servers
I want to scale back to one maybe two servers soon.
This does not include my local jenkins server and my sandbox server

Antarctica (Afterburst) - Web (rms.sexy for example), ircbots, teamspeak, seedbox
Asia (Ramnode) - owncloud
Stacktrace (Ramnode) - Mail
Africa (Ramnode) - Mail
Monitor (Ramnode) - Server monitoring (including servers I manage for work)

pretty sure the best distro for servers would be something based off debian mini
>>

Thanks, dipping my toe into linux as I need a new project and I want something that can do everything and/or has good documention for scrubs so i'll take a look at your suggestion.

Debian man. The packages are old obviously but stable as hell, that thing will run until the hardware rots
>>
>>51758322
Seconding this. I'm still fairly new to linux stuff and I need google every know and then but Debian is the thing for me.

I mostly use it as a VPN for when I'm using public Internet. One of these day though I'm planning on getting an HDD for it and using it as a file server.

>>
>>51758805
Owncloud, torrenting, http server for training, own forum if you have use for such thing, something cool.
OR, open it up for internet and give /g/ your IP and port number with passwords, see how it goes.
>>
got a raspbery pi 2 to shit around with.

not much use, but doesn't draw too much power so meh.
>>
>>51758805
Turn it off if you don't know what to use it for.

I run a teamspeak server for my friends and do some media sharing over the local network, also owncloud and torrenting. I could never get cups running correctly, though
>>
>>51758938
I do know what to use it for, I just find things like 'torrent box' redundant because I already have a QNAP TS doing that. I also have a synology which does sharing over local network on top of the QNAP.

I thought of perhaps making a mumble server or hosting IRC, but then again none of my friends use mumble or IRC.

That's the dilemma.
>>
Any network professionals here? I got Extremenetworks Summit X450a-24t switch from a friend's company. I assume its stackable part of X440 or X460 series because I couldnt find any documentations from internet, therefore I cannot manage this switch via serial NOR management ethernet, nmap founds nothing so I believe webgui isnt on. What should I do? It's great gigabit switch and I'd love to get it up and running. Anyone had similar problems?

That's what I'm saying. If the only things you'd do on the server can easily be done on your pc as well and don't need to be running all the time, don't use a server.
>>
>>51759200
Whats wrong with it, pal? Please elaborate, i am new to networking and would love to learn. Also got it for free so cant really complain, it's fucking sexy too.
>>
>>51759354
you know how long it took me to elaborate a plan and sneak it out of work after they wanted me to 'throw it out' ? IM GOING TO USE IT FOR SOMETHING I SWEAR IT.
>>
>>51759405
Their licenses are bullshit, ask for the password for it if you can otherwise you're going to have a nightmare trying to configure it.

or trade it for a small business gigabit cisco switch, much easier.

There seems to be an excess of engineering sample versions of 2011 xeon chips on ebay, for example someone was selling a http://ark.intel.com/products/75283/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2697-v2-30M-Cache-2_70-GHz

for £300 non engineering sample ! loads of paired 2011 xeons that are ES go for sub 300
>>
>>51759789
Holy shit what a waste!
Just dumpster dig all you can.
>>
>>51759826

They're being catalogued and then passed to a 3rd party that will get rid of them so there is no chance, which is sad.

>Work at an IT company
>They do hardware refreshes approx every 2-3 years
>Hear from IT guy that they're trying to throw shit out, including servers for 'recycling'
>Track down the company and social engineer my way through finding out when the 'recycling' thing is gonna happen.
>The day before they come I take a copy of the IT room KEY from the receptionist telling her i had to 'stay late'
>make a copy of the key a town over (so no one can trace it)
>return the key that same night under the pretense I had to 'work late', so security let me in the building.
>Come again the following night, take a server from the 'recycling pile'
>hide it in the janitors closet then moved it to the bathroom closet (the guy never locked the doors)
>asked him if he could keep it in there for me
>agreed to for $20
>eventually waited for an event to take place so that everyone would be in the upstairs floor and far from the closet
>plugged a hub into the switch to flood the switch that was handling the cameras
>cameras freeze and stop recording
>haul ass and take the server to my car
>take it home
>can't find use for it.

Actually that is cool.
>>
>>51760074
That's a pretty nice heist. Only thing I want to know is why would they just throw perfectly good servers in the trash? They could easily sell something like that to somebody.
>>
>>51760167
yeah it was actually pretty fun now that I think back

>>51760184
Big partner with HP, we get them almost free, by 'recycle' I mean send them back to HP and then they probably refurbish and sell them again.
>>
>>51760074
that's some nice shit anon.

started reading up on social engineering, but can't see myself doing something like this.
>>
>>51759814
lol i'm a poorfag probably should just use consumer gear because the power consumption is better for the consumer cheap hardware then older xeon hardware that is cheap nowadays ( 2008-09)
>>
>>51760074
That's considerably better than my story:
>Work at a local software house with a pretty big server room running all kinds of systems both for internal use and clients who didn't want to host their own systems
>They're in the process of moving most of the internal stuff to new hardware and going all out on virtualization to cut running costs by having multiple servers running on the same piece of hardware
>Ask if I can have one of the servers they're throwing out thinking that I might have my own git repo for a hobby project that I work with on my free time (at the time we were literally mailing out changed source files to the guy who was supposed to be in charge of pulling it all together)
>Boss goes "Sure anon" and I find it dumped on my desk the day after we've gotten everything put in place
>Run the git repo for the previously mentioned project
>End up going on vacation for a week a couple of months down the line
>Come back to find that while I was absent they decided to move the project onto github without consulting me supposedly thinking that I would have been strongly against it
>Can't think of any other use so since then it's been sitting in the apartment building cellar collecting dust
>Except for the last couple of years it's been god knows where because burglars got in there one night and ransacked the place
>Thieves also stole a baby stroller from the staircase leading to the cellar most probably to more easily move the damn thing (it was a rack server after all)
>Didn't even bother collecting insurance on the thing because I knew it was probably next to worthless at this point and I felt bad for the young family who lost their baby stroller so that the thieves could more easily move my worthless server

Any recommendations for a VPS provider who isn't going to snoop on my traffic? It would be used exclusively as a VPN server as I already run everything else I need from home, and would probably do about 3TB in and out per month. Ideally I'd like to be able to pay by bitcoin.
