Where is the sweet spot in terms of age for buying used technology?

2012 seems pretty based right now.
>>
>>51746783

>2012

Try 2009 OP. My rig which plays and has played all recent games from 2009 just now finally is giving me some srs problems.

>GTX 460 and a processor right before sandy bridge came out.
>>
>>51746783
If you're looking for gaming performance, 2012 was great. First generation of GCN, and Sandy Bridge.
>>
>>51747319
If it is giving you some srs problems I'd say it is no longer the sweet spot.
>>
>>51747353
The ol' HD 7870 is from 2012 and for my money is the best GPU you can get on the 2nd hand market. It's comfortably equal to this generation of consoles, so you can be assured of at least a baseline experience for the next 2-4 years.
>>
>>51747319
>X58 feat. Xeon
You mean that?
>>
>>51747901
7970 (and 280X) are great too.
>>
>>51746783

2010-2012

Nehalem i7s are less than $50 and Sandy Bridge i7s cost ~$100.

>>51747901

costs less than $50 as well, and a 7950 costs less than $100, although you might encounter one that's been heavily used for altcoin mining.
Even then, dogecoin and all the other big altcoins were only profitable to mine with one for about 6 months, so it won't have been used too badly.

My friend is giving me her Optiplex GX520 its 2003-2004 thoughts?
I'm only going to scrap the PSU and before that I'll look at the HDD

Probably be a Pentium 4, in which case power hungry, worthless junk.

For real it's almost 2016.

Upgraded from the 7870 to the 280. Didn't improve that much. Really loved my 7870 back in the days. Ran everything even with my FX-6300 processor

Yeah, I don't get the issue here. A GTX 660 ti is well past the mark of minimum requirements for Fallout 4, and the two CPUs will not even be taxed by the game in >>51749643
this anon's system.

I have it set to 30fps because I mostly gamestream it to my laptop. It runs better full screen though.

I run fallout 4 on ultra at 1080p with a 670 and 4770k. This is perfectly reasonable.

I don't understand why there is so much doubt.

This is my computer. The only really demanding games I've tried are Crysis 3 and The Witcher 2. Both run at 1080p/max presets with framerates above 30 fps.

I would bet $100 I can run Fallout 4 just fine. Probably not completely maxed out, but probably the notch below it. Certainly higher than default settings.

>>
>>51749976
I suppose you already had the 660 ti and included its cost when bought it a few years ago, right?
>>
>>51749976
shit for that cost I'd try to work a sr-2 into the budget for overclocking (if this is just a gaming pc).
>>
>>51750005
wasn't the best of estimations, the 660ti was bought used for $75 a few months ago
>>51750007
SR-2's are like unicorns, even more so when you want one with all the DIMM's and PCI-E slots working
they're also stupid expensive for what you get, you might as well get a dual 2011-3 system with >3ghz cpu's
>>
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to list things for sale here (I looked on /rules and didn't see anything saying no). Though it's pertinent to this topic since we're discussing buying technology. Anyways, I'm selling a brand new Aorus X7 Pro-Sync. It's being auctioned for over $600 off if you're interested. http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/191755226314
>>
>>51750027
I see them on ebay every time I look for $600+
I think it may actually be worth it if you get two of the cheaper 6 cores with HT and overclock the hell out of them. you're power bill will be more though.
At least I assume, I havnt looked into 2011-3 xeons, but the 6 core 1366 ones are basically free.

2013 for graphics card (290)
2012 for everything else
>>
>>51750027
Hmm.

Well, overall I'm in about $710 at the end of the day. Bought a used workstation off of ebay and upgraded it with more storage, hot swap bay, and GPU.

I probably made a mistake by purchasing some Iceydock 2.5>3.5" drive bay adapters instead of purchasing a 5.25" hot swap bay for 4x 2.5" drives. That makes up about $30 of cost by itself, and I ended up never really using the 3.5" hot swap bay I did install.

I could have sold my BD-R drive that came with the unit for about $50 or a little more, but I'm rather fond of having the capability of burning blu-rays should the notion ever strike me.

I do use the two CPUs all the time. Tonight I was upscaling old videos using the super-resolution plug-in for virtualdub. Very, very CPU heavy work.
>>
>>51750085
>but the 6 core 1366 ones are basically free.
those quad cores I got were $20 each

I did look at 2011-3 xeons, they smash 1366 xeons
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X5650-vs-Intel-Xeon-E5-1650-v3
overclocked, even a single X5650 still holds its own quite well

also

The GTX 960 2gb came out this year, but it's sort of already outdated/obsolete due to the 4gb model being released, and the upcoming 960 ti.

I expect the old 2gb models will remain a good bargain for a while due to the low cost on the used market along with the low power requirements and aftermarket cooler with reference designs (not as popular).

>>51750463
It's a ThinkStation S20

It's been very good to me, will probably throw a W-series chip in it soon and a new GPU and I'll be good for another three years or more.
>>
>>51750490
I sold the Quadro 4000 in mine for $120 on ebay.

That's the thing about buying these workstations, sometimes you get hardware in them that is still valuable to professionals, and you can sell it and get consumer grade hardware with twice the performance (for the things we usually care about).
>>
probably 2008. overclocked i7920 should still smash most stuff
>>
>>51750528
Not bad. Looks like I can get around $30-60 for mine.

I'm looking at snagging a 950 for it at the moment, then when it comes time to replace it as a DD way down the road I'll fit a Q4000 or 5000 into it if they ever become as near worthless as mid-2000s era hardware did.
