What makes a good monitor?
If on a budget, what should one prioritize? For example, if one's PC can't pull 1440 gaming with FPS high enough for 144hz to make sense, which one should be dropped first (ie. 144hz 1080p or 60hz 1440p)?
If you're on a budget just save a bit longer so you can afford a good 1440p 144hz monitor.
It's well worth saving for, a good monitor will last a long time and is a buy once cry once type thing as far as I'm concerned.

Just get a better job, son. You will be amazed at how much of a consumer whore you can become, if you have a lot of disposable income. Be a good goy, please.
144hz is a meme
I would go with 144Hz. Once you experience it, you realize 60Hz is a glorified slide show.

But what good would 1440p 144hz do to me if my single GPU can't run any 2015-> game on those settings?

I'm an intern right now, so yes, eventually. However, it'll be another year at least before I have an actual job.

I'm tempted simply because I mostly play 2007-2014 games right now. They'll run at high enough FPS no doubt.

good blacks plus 24 bit color

I'd say screw 144Hz. Go with 4k at 60Hz.
The 1080p -> 4k transition blows the (insert your Hz) -> 144Hz transition to hell every single time.

How do you really find out which monitor has good blacks apart from reading reviews? Are the panel types any kind of an indication anymore given how they've all become better over time? I'm under the impression that the contrast numbers etc. are pretty subjective and the scales vary by company unless they standardized them at some point.

Is 4K widespread enough for it to be worth it atm? I was mostly considering upgrading to 1440.

>widespread
Wut? Are you going to be watching TV or playing games / browsing the Internet / using programs?
WHO /ASUS1440P144HZ/ HERE?

Games. I'm not too demanding for anything else. I mean, sure, higher resolution helps with browsing but I do have multiple monitors anyway.
