>2nd Year Chemical Engineering B.S.

Pretty much failing my Organic Chemistry classes. Don't really think Chemical Engineering is for me.

Want to switch to Computer Science. I want to eventually program stuff and be a software programmer. Is this the right major to switch into or is it just a meme major?
>>
>>51724654
going to university is a meme

>>51724706
a necessary and expensive meme

So is having friends and doing something with your life.

>Pretty much failing my Organic Chemistry

You're a chemical engineer that's pretty much expected.

If you are failing physical too then start worrying.
>>

Go to trade school
Electricians and welders can earn more than engineers and computer science degrees
>>
>>51724743
It's not about what you know, it's who you know.
Degrees are a meme.
>>
>>51724654
meme major
but
peice of paper that says, hire me and pay me 20k more for what I'm doing

may as well
>>
>>51724821
>Electricians and welders can earn more than engineers

What kind of bullshit do they teach in these night schools.
>>
I wouldn't go for it if you're not prepared to sit through the 4 semesters of math and computational theory that comes with it.
>>
>>51724878
My dad's an electrician and earns 90k a year. Uncle is a welder and makes more.
>>
I also want to be a software engineer...

is computer science not about programming?
>>
>>51724815
Literally everything in the known universe is a meme.
>>
>>51725009
No, it's about computational science
The science of crunching numbers, which is basically math.

A programmer should know about CS concepts like algorthms if they want to write anything substantial, but it it's not the end goal.
>>
>>51725009
It's about computer science. It's like getting a degree in pure math to do accounting.
>>
>>51725009
It's not supposed to be
Computers engineering might be better for you
>>
>>51725040
But most computer science majors end up working in programming software jobs?
>>
>>51725064
Being a computer scientist is only a job at a university
The only other use is practical computer science
>>
>>51725009
Depends on which university/college you go to, desu. Some of them lean more towards the programming aspect of comp sci as opposed to the computational theory side of it.
>>
>>51725064
Undergrad degrees are meaningless at this point. Most computer scientists teach or do research.
>>
>>51725064
You're talking about watered down "CS" degrees which are computer engineering with some math.
It's more practical at least, because the alternative is dabbling entire in theory and being stuck in academia because you have no real-world skills.
>>
>>51724654
>Failing Ochem
Unfortunately, you won;t do well in CS, then. Both fields require a decent amount of memorization, but then primarily working with memorized content in logical, strict-yet-creative ways. I would recommend life science (more fluid thinking, more memorization).

At the very least, go CompEngi, not CompSci.

>>51724743
This, unfortunately.

>>51724821
This is kind of true. On average, tradesmen earn more, but CompSci has a much higher earning potential given that the person is driven and goes for certs. Also +1 for trade school if you;re finding that you're just not quite smart enough, but still too smart to not be bored by shitty jobs that wouldn't require some sort of training.
>>
>>51724930
>My dad's an electrician and earns 90k a year.

Junior web devs make more than that, and that is basically an open door job.
>>
The computer engineering program in my school is pretty much identical to the curriculum of electrical engineering..

They rarely even touch programming.
>>
I'm in the CS transfer track at my community college and I have like 3 or 4 prereq math classes before I'm allowed to transfer.
The program doesn't even focus very much on programming, and what it does offer is a single data structures course taught in java.

I feel like dropping out, I've been teaching myself programming and algorithms on the side and I've learned more in 2 months than I have in 2 years in college.
My only hope at this point is that I'll become adept enough to write a few nice things to put in a portfolio so employers can ignore the fact that i don't have a degree.
>>
>>51725156
Living in California with a stupidly high living expense most of the time.
>>
>failing Organic Chem
>wants to switch to CS
You're trading off one thing that involves a lot of memorization for another thing that involves a lot of memorization.
>>
>>51724878
Where I live this is true. Software engineers make the same as electricians. To be fair everyone makes about the same in this socialist shithole but dosen't stop them from complainig about muuh inequality.
>>
>>51725199
It's only high if you want it to be. When I first got here, and things were uncertain, I went into full jew-mode and was able to keep my living expenses down to $800 a month. Now that is an extreme of course, but say $1500 that's a lot more doable. $2500, and you can be very comfy.
>>
>>51724654
See if your university offers a software engineering degree or some kind of specialization area or else you're going to be doing more math than programming. you could also just teach yourself/take a few programming classes and still get a job writing software if you build up a decent portfolio.

I got to Cal Poly Pomona so I don't think they have any "software engineering major"

Here are the course curriculum for CS at my school
>>
>>51725658
That course looks pretty solid, desu.
>>
>>51725676
So its programming heavy?

For those studying computer science do you use Linux OS or Windows mostly?
>>
Out of curiosity, are you going to Berkeley?
>>
>>51724654
same shit except 4th year in math
>>
OP here...

So should I switch to Computer Science?
>>
>>51728083
No.
>>
just stick with chem eng and go work for a corn processing plant in the midwest you corn fucker

god damn these threads are pathetic
>>
>asking /g/ for advice

What the fuck?
Might as well sell your body to a sugardaddy.
>>
90% of the people who want to switch to cs have the wrong idea about the type of degree it is and about how coding and even being employed in the field generally works desu senpai
>>
>>51724654
don't do your research on 4chan. Just get your degree in whatever STEM and get out.

If your like me you'll be happy in any technical job, but don't waste your college years trying to find your "passion". if you haven't found it now then just stick with something and then find a good company.

If you wanted to be a computer science person, you need to have the discipline to learn code on your own, don't expect much from a university
>>
>>51724654
>CS
I hope you like theory, math, and data structures anon
>>
>>51724654
CS is nice, I"m graduating with a 6 figure job.
>>
>>51724654
Stop being a little bitch. Every major has a weeded out class.
>>
4th year chem eng here

Essentially all you learn in you're degree is:
stuff in + stuff generated = stuff out + stuff consumed

That and a whole bunch of interesting shit if you pay attention. I've taken programming courses offered by the ece department as my electives and I can program well now. Chem eng with the ability to program is a top notch skillset and IBM has already signed me for 6 figure job as soon as I graduate.
>>
>>51730932
Curious. What position are you working at for IBM?
>>
>>51725658
really small selection of electives :^(
>>

>>51724930
You guys should move to Australia and live like kings. My uncle lives out there and gets paid 300k a year. That's with doing a couple jobs for free a year.
