Same concept here, I'm only going to do it once. Your example of "bitch(es)" is kind of silly, there's no reason for it. Just put "bitch|bitches" and then you're done, simple. I find that having it all easily readable is worth the extra (if there is anything) trouble of more complex regex.
To summarize, I'm going to be doing this only once then save the URL that has everything, it's trivial to generate a list of 000 to 999 using Excel or whatever, and less complex regex means more readability.

There is also a problem on the watching CNN analogy.
You cant have experience on every subject ever and sometimes they say bullshit about something you are clueless about.
Watching CNN in this case have this problem.
In my opinion I do a mix of both, and actually am able to predict how some stuff will happen by watching CNN. I predicted "ban guns NOW" movemnt would happen after watching CNN covering of sandy hook
