Why aren't powerline adapters more popular /g/?

Also, why is literally every brand and model white?
>>
>>51713032
If it's white, its all right.
>>
Because people don't make outlet covers in colors other than white, and people who paint their walls black are certainly in the minority.
>>
>>51713044
I guess that's true. Still, the white is fucking ugly.
>>
I bought this shit for my uni house and it was terrible. Probably just the piece of shit electrics in the house, but I could only get 40mbps from my 200mbps connection and it would drop constantly. It was horseshit.

I tried one once and it was slower than ethernet. The connection speeds and latency aren't very stable. Its still better than wifi though.
>>
What's the point of those? how the fuck do you get internet through electricity?

Uses the electric copper wiring in your house as an ethernet cable, essentially.

Only really works well if the wiring isn't old and shitty.

Frequency modulation, I believe.

>What's the point of those?
For people who are to lazy to run an ethernet cable through their house.
>>

Unless you're completely incapable of setting up wifi then I don't see the reason they exist.
>>
>>51713260

To bad normal people don't actually buy any of those things. Go to any house in America or Europea and I can assure you that the odds that you'll find anything other than solid white outlets is extremely low.
>>
>>51713280
>>51713293
I'm not american and I've never seen one, that's why I was asking.
>>
>>51713311
They seem to be more popular in Europe for some reason.
>>
>>51713311
I think they only work in some countries, where wall circuits are on a ring. That includes the UK and US at least.
>>
Have one right now
Much more reliable than wifi card in my pc.
>>
Because they range from "still not as good as ethernet" to "downright garbage speeds".
>>
>>51713257
>how the fuck do you get internet through electricity?
How the fuck do you normally get Internet? Through the gas pipe?
>>
>>51713389
It's a tube right?
>>
>>51713293
>For people who are to lazy to run an ethernet cable through their house.
Or can't because house is 300 years old and made of stone. (Also rules out wifi)
>>
>>51713389
Not him but I was pretty blown away the first time I read about these too. Never would have thought you could send data through regular copper wiring in your house. I still find it pretty cool.
>>
>>51713293
>Frequency modulation, I believe.

Quadrature amplitude modulation.
>>
>>51713374
The newer 1200Mbps Netgear models obviously aren't as good as Ethernet but they are still pretty damn good. Certainly a shitload better than wi-fi.
>>
>>51713389
>Through the gas pipe?
I wonder how well would they work as an EM waveguide. I guess not very well.

Because they are shit.

I have a pair connected to get Internet in my garage and they fail every now and then. They are just not stable (or my powerline is to shitty)

PS: I tested LAN speeds some time ago and do only get 10Mbit/s. Which is enough for listening to music and checking manuals on the internet though, but I thought it is more

http://cache.insteon.com/documentation/insteon_details.pdf
Look for the chapter titled "INSTEON Signaling"
The entire PDF is about some fairly advanced mesh networking techniques combined with powerline frequency modulation for the purpose of home automation

But if you're a reel /g/ you should be able to understand it, along with the (reason for the ) limitations of powerline adapters in regards to bandwidth rates.

Why would a 300 year old house have electricity but not Ethernet?
>>
>>51713032

>>51714421
Why do most new build houses not come with CAT6 wired everywhere, and why don't all the sockets have USB charging points?
>>
>>51714467

Because they're done at the minimum cost to provide the most basic services most people expect.

But electricity was clearly retro-fitted into your 300 year old house, why can't Ethernet be?

Damn son those are some ugly 1960 outlet covers

Europe is a bit modern i guess
>>
In my experience, it's much faster than wifi but it occasionally drops like wifi too. Unlike wifi, I can quickly reconnect instead of having to wait for the universe to perfectly realign itself for coverage again.

American faceplates are huge, the telephone jack looks ridiculous!
>>
>>51713032
some people care about latency, speed and stability of their connection. most of those people just go with the usual wired approach.
some people don't care, they just use wifi for everything.

that leaves only a small audience for powerline stuff. people who do care, but can't use ethernet for some reason.
also, they don't always work very well. really depends on the wiring.
>>
>>51714492
It can obviously, people are just too lazy and retarded to do it, so they buy into inferior shit like this.
>>
>>51714579
That's just a result of conforming to code and economics of cost.
Generally you would route everything to a junction box, and this box has that outlet cover on it. Obviously having a smaller cover would be desirable if all you had was a telephone jack on it, but it's expensive for companies to make or stock multiple sizes of junction boxes, so people prefer the one-size-fits-all approach.
>>
>>51714615

Massively off-topic now, but the UK has a few standards. Single faceplates, approx 3" square, can fit one plug outlet, light switch, two euro modules etc. Or double, 3" x 5.5" ish, for suitable plugs, more euro modules etc. They just look nicer

if he keep the switch always on, it's the same thing as a normal outlet? it's more conveniant no?

I use the exact one in OP. It's not 100% reliable, but the added speed vs wireless n is worth the one or two disconnects per week.

It made streaming from my xbox to my peecee go from barely working to flawless. Well worth the ~70-80 dollar price tag

fun fact is that if you don't toggle their secure mode, people can sniff ur datas with a multimeter and shit

I live in an annex attached to a larger house and have no telephone socket of my own but the owners, who I rent from, have allowed me to install powerline adapters, one in my annex, one in their house, which allows my computer to get internet access.

I've no complaints, the connection is so far 100% stable after two years of constant use and there's no speed issues, they're more than capable of working at speeds far higher than the connection is actually giving us.

I always wonder when I see someone knee-jerk about how terrible and awful powerline adapters are, it usually sounds like their parents were raped and killed by them.

Mine aren't even from a reputable brand and they work flawlessly.
