Why don't you just micro manage the registers while you are at it? The point of a programming language is to provide an environment where the programmer has to think about as little low level stuff as possible, tracking variable names and labels over huge sections of code is a nightmare best left to the compiler. Even c handles scope.

Seriously your code should not be riddled with global variables.

on youtube, ForeignGuyMike has a good 10 part series to get things going. I remember going through that when i first started with it.

libgdx is pretty bare bones as far as an engine goes, but once you have something basic up and running, the documentation on their github is usually good enough.
