I generally stay away from Asus products due to REALLY bad experiences with one of their motherboards, but I got a pretty good deal on a second hand GTX 970 that was only 2 months old with a 3 year warranty and the previous owner had replaced with a 980 Ti.

MSI GTX 780 Gaming. Picked it up brand new in October, as MSI found a bunch of unsold 780s and 780 Tis in the back of a warehouse somewhere and sold them off cheap. Got it for the same price as a GTX 960. Will do nicely until the next gen arrives.

Powercolor r9 390 PCS+. Capable of playing Dark Souls 2 on ultra at 1440p staying under 60C (zo the fans never even kick on). Love it. Have same company and model 290 sitting in my closet collecting dust because this 390 I have now was an Rma replacement for defective 290.

Notbwho you're quoting, but I personally had a CX750M die on me in less than 3 months of light use. I wouldn't trust the CX series at all for anything even close to the max voltage. Realistically that 500 lw is giving maybe 475-480w on the 12v rail as it is only bronze certified.

Can you run a single 380X and i5? Yes. Should you overclock the piss out of your stuff on that same PSU? No.
>>

Should've gone with Fury Xs, Crossfire scales better than SLI and is faster in a triple config than the latter.

Really? What models? On air or custom liquid? Overclocked or stock?

Someone on a forum I frequent bought 2 x evga 980ti kingpin models. Custom EK blocks. Has them both at 1650mhz clock 24/7. Custom BIOS etc. Those 980ti cards aren't nearly as energy efficient as people think when you start loading the voltage on.

Hanted this is the same guy who had an MSI r9 290X lightning under water at 1450mhz @ 1.45v.

Gtx 960 4gb here. I like it so far. Low power use, cool temps unless under max load, and even then still only 71c. Only a 1080p monitor so I don't really need any more juice than this.

The CX series is pretty shit in terms of reliability (because it's built down to a price and uses shit tier components), but it's reliable enough and serves up clean enough power. A 4690K and 380X isn't going to come even remotely close to 500W anyway. You'll be fine.
>>
290x crossfire and this will be the last time I use crossfire. For the two years or so that I've had this setup I think I've been able to use my second card on like 5 games. I don't know if sli has the same issues but fuck crossfire.

Gtx 680 Lightning.

I had a corsair CX 600w and it was a massive pile of dogshit. I couldnt get the system to post at all with every connection checked, all compatibility checked. Fans would spin and lights would come on for a half second and die.
I swapped it for an EVGA 600w and it works fine.
>>
>>51691032
Sli suffers just as bad deoending on the game. Each game has its oreference of either xfire or sli. I had xfire 290s too. Top card would cook even under only a moderate load while the 2nd bottom card did nothing. When 1 290 failed, they sent me an r9 390 as replacement. Been running single 390 since then. Much more enjoyable experience.

My 670s had the same problem of game compatibility but they had reference coolers, not open air. Also they just naturally ran cooler so even if 1 card wasnt in use, they werent as bad.

I mean, I don't want to seem like I'm defending the CX range. I'd advise anybody to buy a better PSU than that (and not overpriced Corsair shit either), but any manufacturer can have a faulty unit. I had a Thermaltake that blew its fucking arse out after two hours of light desktop use, yet reviews of the unit I had were pretty good.

Even based Super Flower sent a couple of faulty units to JonnyGuru a while back that suffered from a ripple issue that was attributed to a fault.

No. Just no. If your heart is set on the dual gpu 290, get the r9 295x2.

The r9 295x2 is comprised of 2 290X chips.
The r9 390x2 is two 390 non X chips.

The 390x2 has more ram but less shaders. Clock for clock the 295x2 will be faster than the 390x2.

Lastly, unless you olan to liquid cool it withba custom block, dont bother. Even the clc models run hot and loud. Powercolor made their air cooled version called Devil13. Triple slot cooled monster that easily reaches 85C just under gaming load at stock clocks.

Unless you're shooting for like 144 FPS at that resolution, my single 980ti is only at about 50-70% usage at 3440x1440 with damn near everything maxed at a flat 60 FPS. I can only guess a single 980ti should be able to do about 100 FPS at near max at 2560x1440 if you go that route.

>>
>>51691830
Yea. No. Not while comoanies still want to make money. In order for gpu units to be used like that or even cross company gpus working together, amd and nvidia would have to be on board. Not only that, but games would still have to be designed with that in mind.

Then it comes down to why bother buying a new $750 flagship if I can just get 3 low power cards for $75 each, link them together, and get the same performance?

This is assuming DX12 actually links the cards perfectly and doesnt suffer from micro stutter just like xfire and SLI.

Well since you Have a rather good budget lets look at the Games.

League of legends could be played on Super low power system so no matter what you Get you should be fine.

Arma3 and all If its variants Built off its enginev is a very cpu bound game.

With your budget and considering you most likely are looking to keep your pc for several years, I'd recommend an i7, compatible board and 16gb ram(2x8gb sticks). Unlocked and z series board of course for future overclocking if you want.

I say This because as time goes on, games are and will become more and more multi-thread b friendly meaning the extra 4 threads in the i7 will actually do something.

As for gpu, it depends. None of this games seem particularly gpu demanding and could easily be done by a mid range gpu while you play the waiting game for pascal cards.

Absolute lowest Id go fof a card would be the r9 370 from amd or the gtx 960 2gb from nvidia. Your budget would easily allow for a more pricey card, but as it stands the game you mentioned arent too heavy, especially because youre on LoL 70% of the time.

And because nvidia Pascal cards are coming out next year youll be kicking yourself for spending $600 alon a killer flagship gpu now rather than later. If you feel youll easily have the money to buy another flagship at that time anyway, then fuck it. Buy an r9 Fury or gtx 980 ti.

Just keep in mind like I said. If you use Linux exclusively or more si than windows, a nvidia card will treat you better.

AMD won't go under before 2020 (when their debts come due...), so you should be fine. the real worry here is that they recently spun off their GPU division into radeon technology group and might sell it off in the next year or two.

the tiny case really is the icing on the cake. here's the best temp I could squeeze out of it before it becomes truly unbearably loud. 1st test before I adjusted the fan curve had it at 79C

Should work, AMD is always pretty lenient. 3GB and 6GB 7970s could be Xfired too iirc.

Just bought a Radeon R9 380 4GB, hasn't came yet.

The last GPU I bought was a 9500 GT.

Really looking forward to using it. I don't even care if it's not that great, this thing is a piece of shit.
>>
>>51690756
Ok so basically crossfire is a more accepting to having to different cards with different amounts of vram problem is the vram used is the smaller amount but hey at least you can crossfire with two different cards
>>
>>51693502
probably going to blow you away with the difference .

going from a 770 to a 390 i noticed a huge difference .
>>
Do you buy your graphics card in a colour that matches the rest of your build?
>>
>>51693502
Went from a 9400GT to a GTS 250, was a nice upgrade.
Then went from a GTS 250 to an R9 270X, shit was cash.
Then finally snapped up an R9 290, mind fucking blown.
>>
>>51693534
Yeah. I don't even know what to expect. If it can play some newer games on anything other than the lowest possible settings I'll be happy enough. I don't know much about the state of current hardware or how good the card I bought was.

Figured I might ask this here

So when I built this setup for this home away from home I picked up a 350w from a friend for free.

Getting a MSI Radeon R7 370 4GB Video Card for this build, would upgrading to around 500w be good enough to power it generally?

Since I'm buying the psu later on how big of a difference will I notice when I'm using it with my current 350w?
>>
>>51693645
Nothing. 350W is enough for a 370.
>>
I use a 7970 (not the GHz edition, unfortunately) with an Arctic Accelero Xtreme cooler and VRAM heatsinks on it. I got it on eBay a few days ago for $100 and I have a sneaking suspicion that the previous owner used it for mining. Other than a slight flex from lack of support, though, it seems to be all right, and it runs just fine at stock speeds. So I suppose I'm happy with it.

It takes up the entire length of my case, though, so getting it in was a pain in the ass.

Good, better than my refurbed OC 270.

It had very little trouble handling GTA V at high, but I didn't push it further with that game. I haven't played enough newer shit to provide a better answer than that.

Asus dCUII R9 390x.

XFX Double-D 280X. Bought it off Craigslist a little over a year ago, it's served me well.
