Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How many of you have changed a HDD for an SSD? Was it night and day?

When you have a SATA 2 thinkpad, do you benefit from a decent SSD?
>>
i read the guide but theyre a lot more expensive in the netherlands, what do?
>>
>>51684296
got myself mSata ssd so I don't have to swap hdd, what buggers me is fact that people are still looking at sequential speeds in ssd but for os you need fast(er) seek time and a lot of IOPS for small files and I bet you would see difference even on sata1
my advice: you got money -> go for it
>>
>>51684296
I bought one already with an SSD. Compared to my previous computer, things are lightning-fast.

1. deal with it
2. order from usa and pay import taxes
3. steal
that's what we get for being from europe

Search for eBay.
I shared in the last thread, there was a massive sellout of x220t from Germany (they shipped to the rest of Europe if asked).
More than 20 laptop, they were sold for 80 to 180€.
Got one for 120€.
>>
>>51684386
>>51684421

My T410 cost me $230, still needs a new keyboard, battery and SSD to make it shine.

Well worth it because even though it is more expensive than buying in America, you are still miles ahead of any other laptop.
>>
>>51684386
politely request a modest kekshed allowance increase :^)
>>
>>51684467
The last one is at 110€ now and ends in 20 minutes, expect it to end at 180 or 190, it's the last one after all.
>>
>>51684296
My T410s came with a dogshit 4200RPM hard drive and the thing was slow as all hell. Threw an mSATA SSD in an adapter, and even with Windows 7 dragging it down, it is the fastest-booting computer I own. Programs and files open lightning-quick. I would say to upgrade to an SSD before even thinking about RAM and processor.
>>
>>51684609

You are right. I was using a dekstop with an 850 evo plus 4gb of RAM and it was amazing; now with 12gb of RAM I feel around the same since I don't keep much things open at the same time.
>>
>>51684467
Don't these have German keyboard layouts though? Or do you get a separate keyboard along with it?
>>
>>51684670
Yeah... my W520 has 16 gigs of RAM but a 7200 RPM hard drive. It feels sibstantially slower than the T410s despite the fact that the latter has a major RAM disadvantage (4 GB vs 16 GB) and processor disadvantage (i5-520M vs i7-2720MQ). Literally the only advantage to having a hard drive is the fact that it doesn't wear out as fast from torrenting or frequently moving large files. Also easier to destroy data when/if you eventually sell the computer.
>>
>tfw my t420 is better spec'd processor wise than most laptops today and will last longer

Memepad is best meme, now I just need to figure out how to sell my newer shittier laptop without drama on Craigslist.
>>
When is the Thinpad Yoga 260 coming out?
>>
>>51684924
>Craigslist

Guaranteed there will be a guy named Suraj who offers you 50% of your asking price and keeps bugging you about it.

Actually one guy in a past /tpg/ was trying to sell a W530 and kept having some starving artist begging him to take half the asking price and a few paintings he had made. Our response was divided between pity and mockery. But everyone universally agreed that it was more important to get 'muh money'.
>>
>>51684386
Buy 2nd hand or refurbished.
>>
>>51685418
It's a G50-80 with 768p cancer. Paid $400 for it back when I didn't care about muh specs (though it still has a i5-5200u), should be able to get $350 at least because a "similar" config on the lelnovo website is like $700. Hopefully I can sell it before I move to bumfuck Kansas/Nebraska.

Laptop has as much flex as a piece of paper and shit cooling.
>>
>>51684296

My x200 didn't come with a drive, first thing I did was drop an SSD into it. No idea how it feels with a lol 5400 but with a proper SSD it feels great. I don't even notice the core 2 duo at all.

A full boot up now takes me ~22 seconds, with 15 seconds spent doing whatever the fuck in the bios, even after turning off PXE boot and AMT, etc. After that I get to the login prompt in 7 seconds, hardly even enough time for a proper OS splash screen and loading icon before I'm at the login prompt.

For sequential I'm only getting 270/100, which I'm pretty sure is bottlenecked by the chipset. The 4k read and IOPS speeds are still great and make a big difference to perceived "snappiness".

I think I'd rather use a Core2Duo with Sata3 SSD than an i7 booting from rust.

what is this, an SSD for ants?

liking the sounds of the X220, but the RAM and SSD are turnoffs. How easy/expensive would it be to fix this?
>>
>>51686479

I went with this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-KingDian-2-5-60GB-SSD-SATA-III-SATA3-Solid-State-Drives-For-Laptops-/231565315516

Seems to be working fine for $30. I liked the "truthiness" of the listing w/ benchmark table included.

"60 Gigs should be enough for anyone" - enough room to install a few '95-'05 era games, GIMP, Libreoffice, and a browser is all I need from this computer as I have a MBP w/500GB disk and a 1TB external for all my media files. For those same reasons I'm not too worried about data loss, nothing irreplaceable on here other than some dank memes.

If you're looking at it as more of an "investment" everyone seems to like the Samsung Evo's
>>
>>51686961

Two of those satisfy my needs, I hope they are reliable enough since $60 can certainly accomodate various things.

Senpais, I need your help.

I'm a student, and as such, need a laptop. My current laptop is crapping out, and I need a new one. I need it to be somewhat transportable (13-15") and also be rugged, since I don't want such a fragile piece of shit again.

I've been looking at the T420 and the T410 refurbished, and I can't really decide beween the two. Help me decides senpais?
>>
>>51687784
T410 is:
-Less powerful graphics
-16:10 aspect ratio
-SATA2
-10% slower CPU
-Cheaper

That's about it man, maybe less CPU efficiency thus slightly less battery life. I got a T410 and I baby it because it allows me to actually work even with an old 9-cell that lasts 2.5 hours.

If you like Hollywood aspect ratio for movies or multitasking in the same screen then go for the T420's 16:9.
>>
>>51687784
420, better get the best specs you can afford if it has to last you for a while. It has no real disadvantages compared to the 410.

Considering upgrading from my T61 and going smaller. How's the IPS screen on the x230 (same panel as the x220)?

I figure I'll give the chiclets a shot, but if the keyboard don't jive, I'll do the x220 keyboard/palmrest swap. I can live with the key function issues.

Any other features besides the thinklight and lid latch I'll be losing? I know I'll gain some other stuff.

Anyone have experience with the Thinkpad x220 Tablet? Is the touch screen and swivel helpful or does it just get in the way? I do know that it is very slightly heavier/wider, but by a barely noticeable amount.

The buying guide in the OP puts them worth $100 over the standard model.

IPS on the X230 should be good, older X220 IPS panels had white spot and image persistence problems.

I want a 14inch IPS good quality screen and a decent i7 chipset, all on a slim model

There's a bunch of like T450 and T440 around ~1k, a couple used or refurb for a little less. Then there are E series that sport the same specs for slightly less. What are the E series skimping on that makes them cheaper? Are their screen secret shit or something?

I feel bad that the t520 I bought years ago for almost the same price, adjusted for inflation, isn't significantly worse overall. You better be putting in a terabyte drive. Anything under 500 fills up way too fast even if you say you don't need it. The thinkpad becomes your new main pc.

Does anyone else find the T61/T400 keyboards to be absolutely abysmal to type on? I never actually experienced this generation of Thinkpad (my first was a T40 and I jumped to a T410 from that) until just yesterday when my office got ready to recycle a few. I picked up a bunch with the intention us selling some and using the most powerful/best condition one as a Linux fuckaround machine. The T61 keyboard especially felt mushy and imprecise. The T400 was better in terms of typing feel but had a LOT of flex by Thinkpad standards.

To me, it seems like the T40 and the T410/420 were both excellent keyboards, but there was an interlude period where nothing but dogshit was being used. Why was the T61 being touted as the gold standard here for so many years? The only advantage I can see is the solid backplate, which substantially reduces flex. The switches themselves are awful.

T520 is xbox hueg, but has better cooling and better screen options.
T420 isn't so hueg, costs less, and has BIOS mods in development to allow usage of faster RAM and Ivy Bridge processors.
Performance-wise, they're more or less identical except the T520 was designed to use a quadcore CPU while the cooling in the T420 might not be sufficient if you put one in. The T420 will beat it in the long run, unless those mods make their way to the T520 at some point.

The only one I know of is that the rubber tabs on either side of the keyboard had a tendency to break the plastic and fall out. I got my x220t for cheap because I didn't mind one with one of the tabs missing.

All the tabs do though is keep the screen from wiggling when closed.

I am thinking about buying a X201. I currently have a X61, and previously had a T61. I liked the touchpad of the T61 (don't judge), I like the size of the X61, the screen resolution is too small though. The X201 seems to have a resolution of 1280x800, which is more than the 1024x768 of my current X61.
The X220 does not have physical buttons for the touchpad, so that is no choice.
The X201s does have an even better screen resolution, but I am unable to find one on sale.

My question is: how loud is it going to get? The current X61 has a small fan in the chassis that is driving me nuts. I tried disconnecting it, but without it I just get fan failure and no boot. Replacement parts would probably cost more than the whole device.

I am not concerned about performance or price, but I would like a good old Thinkpad for some tinkering. Thoughts?
>>
Which are more desirable on the market? x220 or x220t?
>>
>>51703900
x220t has a higher price point due to the extra hardware features

I've found that that's usually the cost for one with minor damage like a broken/missing rubber nub. 'like new' ones tend to run higher.
>>
>>51704486
I think you can do a keyboard swap on a T430 to replace it with the seven-row T420 keyboard, though some of the special buttons might not work quite right, if I remember?

I've got a T420 as my daily driver and it can handle reasonable gaming loads, but the 4000 in the 30 series is supposed to be a much better integrated card than the 3000 in the 20 series. Depends what kind of gaming you're interested in doing really.

I recall hearing about the keyboard swap. I would play minecraft with texture packs and xcom enemy within. Maybe fallout 3 if it's possible

Googling XCOM, which is probably the most performance-intensive out of the bunch, I see people talking about running it on HD 3000 cards without much trouble, though you're probably going to have to set the graphics down low.

For the other games, I've played a Minecraft clone (minetest) and a bunch of Bethesda engine games (not FO3 specifically, but Oblivion and Skyrim) and they all ran well, though obviously we're not talking about a gaming powerhouse here.
>>
>>51688261
I run a T420 myself. Love it, though it does have coil whine and occasionally brightness adjustment shits the bed (though that's fixed by just closing the lid and opening it again).

Still, I can't go back. If you'd told me two years ago that I'd be spoiled by a nub and realized how shite touchpads are, I'd have said you're dumb.

The hard drive is usually noisier than the fan, so replace that with a SSD. Under Linux you can use Thinkfan to stop the CPU fan until it reaches a temperature threshold. I use 55C so it's silent unless I start playing a video or compiling something.

I am going to retire my X61, and I am going to take the SSD over to the new one. So yeah, no noise from the harddrive.

Do you have an experience undervolting/underclocking an X201? I think that should help me keep the temperature down while the fan is off.

>>51703358
So on the **30 thinkpads onwards, how does one control volume, and go back and forward in file browsers and internet browsers?
Do people use AHK or something?
>>
>>51705623
Unfortunately with the fan completely off, you can hear coil whine and crackling from the voltage regulator and some hissing from the speakers (goes away if you hit mute).

>>51705770
Backspace and shift+backspace for navigating in the browser.

The **30's still have hardware volume buttons, on everything newer I think it's available with a Fn key combination.
>>
>>51705936
Thanks for the warning. Is that something the whole series suffers from, or would it not be present on a X201i or X201s (if I find one)?
>>
>>51705996
The 200 and 201 both suffer from coil whine, which is especially bad when using the Ultrabase. the X230 is a lot better, I don't have experience with all the variants though.
>>
>>51706042
As far as I can see the X201 is the only one with the touchpad I want.
This is purely for mobile usage, so no docking station.
I am going to think about this, and decide tomorrow. Thank you for your input.
>>
>>51706042
on X220(t) coil whine or other unexpected noises are not present or at least noticable, but I got ultrabase and the noise from mSata ssd coil in speaker output is unbearable even if music is playing
can somebody confirm it's just my base faulty?
>>
>>51705936
shift+backspace doesn't work for file browsers

I still love having dedicated buttons on my X220

I meant pause, skip forward, backward, and stop
Volume is still there, but not these
The one improvement i'd say is the fullsize windows key, but aside from that I really don't like the new keyboard design. You can't feel for keys, like the old ones that were separated for example in sets of 4 for the F keys, and differently sized escape and delete keys around the other keys. Now all the keys above the keyboard are the same, which is kind of annoying, and all these function keys are gone. It's literally less functional

The TN panels on t420/430 aren't as bad as you'd be led to believe. Have you ever used a three or four year old consumer laptop, like a basic Asus or Acer or Toshiba or whatever? It looks like that but with an antiglare matte finish.

They sure do look like shit in photographs though. Nowhere near this blue or washed out in person. An IPS would be nice but it really isn't a deal breaker.

I have zero recollection of which screen is on my t520 but it is pretty nice. FRU 42T0743 for anyone who gives a fuck. Nothing special, but not bad. Really wide viewing angle if it isn't IPS. The only t4xx I ever used had a crap screen, at least compared to this one. If you're even considering the t4xx, get the 5xx because it isn't much larger but is so much better. That opens up all kinds of screen options if you just aren't sure.

they are the same, 29++ (9cell), 29+ (6cell) and 29 (3cell) were models for X220, they were replaced by batteries from X230 (44++, 44+, 44) but as we all know they use same chasis thus same batteries, if you check wattage numbers are same, thou you cam say 44 series are better because they are newer thus have less mileage
also chances are pretty much close to zero but check your 29++ battery here and you may recieve free replacement, even if it seems like that 44++ you got is already from here

Depends on what you want out of it. I'm running both on my X220t just for the sake of it. The power manager just doesn't want to play nice with 8 so I have it in 7 to set battery charge thresholds which are cleared if I remove the battery, but preserved if I reboot into 8

The resolution is good for the screen size, and IMO the tablet version has a nicer screen, but it way bulkier and heavier. The docks are pretty cheap ( I bought mine for 30 dollars and got a DVD burner and a SATA adapter for it ) and include ethernet, DP++ and 4 USB 2.0 ports.

>Movies
Small size makes it great for movies in bed. The tablet version has speakers on the screen, the regular version has them under the chassis. The tablet is also convenient for strange viewing configurations. The tablet is better for consuming media on.

>Programming
Keyboards on all laptops suck for programming. The screen is also small as fuck for text. However when you dock it both of those problems disappear.

My current set up

>X230
>Dock
>1TB dock drive
>Gaymur Keyboard
>GTX 750TI
>Old 1080P Monitor

Fits literally all of my computing needs, is more powerful than my old desktop, and I can disconnect it and gtfo with a tiny laptop.

Okay, thanks. One last question, I've put the T500 cooler in my T60 to help contain the ATI housefire. If I get a T61 board will it still fit or will I also have to get a T61 cooler?

How much difference ips and regular display on the x220? Worth it to pay a bit more for one with ips?

It'll fit, you're good. Just make sure the heatsink makes good contact with the GPU die. If it doesn't, it might be beneficial to carefully bend it ever so slightly.
