Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How come it's easier to use the trackpoint with my thumb rather than the index finger?

Personal preference?

I use the index finger for the clit, thumb on the buttons
>>
>>51653988
Not even a preference. The movements of my thumb are just somehow much more precise than using the index finger. I started legitimetly wondering if I was using it correctly at all.

Would getting a T430 and upgrading the screen be a good plan or should I just go for something like the T440s? I'm hoping not to go more than ~$300-350
>>
>>51654139
>upgrading the screen be a good plan

$50 for a chinese converter board (flickering issues?) + 1080p panel

T440s = $30 for a usable trackpad
1080p IPS models might be more expensive
>>
I would like to confirm something that I read a while ago on the internet but was not able to fin it again...

Are the processors on newer thinkpads way less powerful in comparison to the T410 and T420? I know there is a trend going for efficiency but I just wanted to confirm if an older thinkpad can be a better desktop replacement than the newer ones.
>>
I own a x220 and the right hinge is loose by about 3mm. I don't think it's the actual hinge rather where the hinge is attached to the lower section. Any fixes I can do?
>>
>>51654175

I don't get people wanting IPS panels, can't you just buy a second monitor? Sure is nice but for mobile use, which is a laptops forte, a TN panel is wonderful.
>>
>>51654188
No.

Check benchmarks if you're interested.

>>51654199
Open it up and tighten it. Look for the service manual.
>>
>>51654219
I am not sure if you understand the difference between IPS and TN, or what. If you're primarily using your laptop on the go, the IPS is vastly superior, just for the viewing angles alone. TN is fine if it is just sitting on a desk all day but annoying as hell if you're constantly switching position.

That being said, there are some very good TN displays out there, but they tend to be on extremely massive, non-portable Thinkpads (ie, W series).
>>
>>51654443

Yeah on the viewing angles you are correct, I was assuming that the IPS panel was glossy which is not right?

The panel on my T410 is good enough, not the best color reproduction but not the worst. Very easy on the eyes as well.

what's the best way to optimize for performance and battery life? either

I purchased a x230 with a TN panel and the regular batteries. What battery life should I expect? Should I invest in a 9 cell battery?

B-b-but are ideapads welcome? I just got a G51-35 A8 quad core, and maxed out the ram at 16GB, and swapped the shitty 5400rpm 1tb hdd for a 32/500 ssd/hdd hybrid, and when it gets here, I ordered a caddy that turns the DVD drive into a second disk bay and I'm putting the original drive back in.

The only complaint I have is the resolution being 1366x768. The r5 graphics that cannibalises 1GB of my ram was driving a 1080p display over HDMI and ran left4dead 2 @30fps on low, so its definitely capable of running a better display resolution. But I guess lenovo had to cheap out somewhere with a quad core apu, 8gb ram, and a 1tb hdd for $250

How the hell do you use the nub, and what's the purpose of the extra set of clickers?
>>
>>51656513
think about masturbating your girlfriend by massaging her clit (or yourself if you are a girl, for one i don't care)

these clickers are for the trackpoint (the nub), you move the nub with your index or middle finger and use the thumb to click these, like a mouse.
>>
>>51656513
You push it where you want the cursor to go. The buttons are for use with the clitmouse, so you never have to take your hands off the keyboard.

Just disable the trackpad and solely use the clit for a few days and you'll get the hang of it. Eventually you'll wonder how you ever lived without it and find yourself reaching for it on any keyboard you use.
>>

dont worry you eventually will get the hang of it, its more useful than the trackpad as you can get all the screen without having to move your finger away from it. and forget these accidental pressings when typing furiously

Is $380 a fair deal for what this guy is offering?
I know it's $30 dollars more than the outright buy it price in the guide, but so are most of the deals on ebay. It has a professional refurb.
Another question I have is about batteries. Do you trust sites like laptopbatteriesexpress? Where do you get them from?
Lastly, I rarely see information in listings talking about IPS or TN. Is it safe to say if nothing is said its a TN display?
Thanks /tpg/.
>>
>>51656478
Eh. I only buy AMD products anyway. The shared graphics is perfect for my use since I bought this laptop for uni. The r5 more than handles e-lectures in full screen, and the machine itself is very snappy (better now that I swapped out the 5400rpm drive for a ssd/7200rpm hybrid drive. The resolution is disappointing though.

I fucking love the full numpad though.

I am unsure what card it has because I accidentally deleted the specifications of the hardware.

Alright /tpg/, I'm probably gonna buy myself (another) thinkpad this christmas, just to mess around with it and cry myself to sleep over the holidays.

So I have a few thinkpads already, and I'm trying to make a list of the GOATest ones.

Currently I got:

X220 (main system, 8GB ram, ips with mSATA and HDD for some ~2TB storage space, 9 cell + slice, can use VGA and displayport to plug into 2 screens and also mouse + keyboard for dual monitor setup at home. Love it, and don't plan on buying an expensive laptop as a replacement for years to come. It only needs a higher res screen and better graphics to be unbeatable)

T60p (14.1 inch, the best laptop keyboard I've ever used. I'd love a 15 inch 1600x1200)
X201 (supposedly it's the same keyboard, but it feels cheaper, perhaps it has inferior domes or something. Still love the shape of the system, and that 16:10)
T40 I got for a laugh. screen res too low 1024x768, too slow for much more than trying old linux distros and emulating very old games. Cool aesthetics though.

As far as I know the other great thinkpads are the X60/X61, the X60t/X61t, T420, and apparently the T430 and X230 are actually okay.

I might get an X60t or X61t, they look cute as fuck. Is there much difference between them?
Should I just get the memest thinkpad, the T420, or is the 1600x900 screen really that bad?
Maybe look for a cheap deal for a 15 inch T60p 1600x1200, or a X220 tablet to doodle on?

What thinkpad would be fun to try next /tpg/?
>>
>>51658209

It may just be a matter of having the right harness for the drive. No idea if the 10s is a 7mm or a 9.5 and the t420 line is universally 9.5 except for my t520 which apparently has a 7mm but can fit a 9.5 with a different harness. It should be possible.

Don't think I'd get a W series unless I was moving somewhere abroad for a short enough time to not need to take my screens, but long enough time to want large screens, a few months or something.
The W520 and lower aren't more powerful than my X220 anyway, and the W530 onwards are more costly and have a new keyboard that, while being better than most, aren't as good as older thinkpad keyboards. I'd rather wait and see what the W560 is all about.
As for T series, I've been thinking about getting a T420 or T430 for a while. The only reason I'd really want a T430 over a T420 is for the better integrated graphics, it would be fun to run some games on it a bit better.
I don't see myself getting a T410, T400 or T61, they don't appeal to me, they're slower systems, and the only reason I'd get an older T series that I can see is a T60p for that 1600x1200 screen experience.

Mostly I'm choosing between an X60t/X61t (for its cuteness), X220t/X230t (to doodle on and use what's already inside my X220, though it's very upsetting it has no mSATA and only allows 1 drive, meaning i'd have a small SSD inside only), or T420/T430/W520/W530 (for larger 1600x900 or 1080p screen)

I'd go with the x tablet because I almost bought one but upgraded my t520 instead.

The 1600x900 screen is nothing special, although it is better than most laptop screens, wish I'd gotten the gloss when I ordered it. Bright as all fuck though.

It's a really tough decision. I couldn't live without the extra screen size because hooking into a monitor is annoying and I stream video so I don't have to, so I recommend the 520, but I'm really feeling the age of the integrated graphics in it.

This, a million times this.

I'm still using a W510 as my main computer, but I never really take it to school because I take notes on looseleaf. However, just last week I took it to a group meeting and I was reminded of just how massive this thing really is. It absolutely dwarfed the Macbooks Airs and Asus Zenbooks my groupmates were using. What will suck for the X61T is that you'll need to do the middleton bios and swap out the WiFi card, that shit is hot.
IMO I liked how cute the X61s was.

My 14" T60p was a solid laptop, if only it was IPS it would of been timeless, way better than a T61 if the same form factor, its crazy the build difference.

I'd say see if you can get an IPS T4x or T6x.
Fun fact, the X32 was made because a lot of people complained about how underpowered the X40's were. They still used the same graphics processor as the X31 just an updated CPU.

The X201 uses a keyboard of its own, X series keyboards are slightly different.

Maybe get a T430 if its cheap.

well you see, a theme is a string or thread of inter-related and connected ideas- that is they all share something or a few somethings in common. some themes are vague, like courage, or depression, or the futility of war, but other things are specific, like recurring symbology in a painting or architecture. The key to recognizing themes in a work of art or some other thing is to find the connections that link each disparate part together. for example, my windows theme focuses on the color black, and a muted minimalism. I try to keep things as simple as possible. it doesn't mean that everything must be the same, but at least similar. instead of a flat black background i could have a dark geometric pattern, or a photograph that features primarily dark, muted colors.
even in thinkpads the main theme is understated professionalism- everything is dark and the only bright bits serve to contrast with the darkness and accent it. so you get chassis's that are very dark, matte and utilitarian- nothing flashy or tacky. the only real color on the system is in the mouse and the leds. It tells everyone "hey, i'm for working, not for fucking around on facebook"

What do you want one for? There's a huge amount of models, all suitable for different niches. At your budget you have access to just about any of them, but that doesn't mean you should spend all that money on the Thinkpad itself. Money not spent on the main unit can be put towards docking stations, extra batteries, hardware upgrades, Ultrabay stuff, and other such things.

i'm between a t420 , x220 and x220 tablet. the t420 is 200$ the x220 220$ and the x220t about 260$.

I will be using it for school (programming) and general browsing so it will be loaded with windows and linux (don't know which yet) and a bunch of programs.

Is the x220 tablet that much better to justify the price diference from the non tablet one? How useful are tablet controls outside of windows? Does the t420 run cooler than the x220? Also is the price and upgradeability of the t420 worth the extra bulk that comes with the larger screen?
>>
>>51664189
An X300 or X301 might be comfy. They're terribly weak with ULV Core 2 Duo processors, but the screen resolution is decent for the size and the keyboards are apparently top-tier even among Thinkpads.

Alternatively, it's hard to go wrong with a T420. Very good general purpose Thinkpad, currently leading in price/performance. Just make sure you get one with a 1600x900 screen, the 1366x768 option is crap. If you're not too concerned about battery life or upgradability, you can consider the slim variant (T420s) as well. You don't have to worry about getting a better screen resolution, since they only come with the 1600x900 option. They also have USB 3.0, which is nice.

Although for movies you might want a better screen than what the smaller models can offer. The T520 is effectively the same as a T420, but being an inch bigger means it has better cooling and a 1080p screen option. Check out the T510 as well, while it's basically a weaker T520 it should still be more than capable of what you want from it while being cheaper and more common. If you don't mind dabbling in a bit of modding, there is also a 1080p IPS mod for the aforementioned T420s, which would be even better than any of the standard TN panels available in the 15" models.
>>
>>51664264
The maximum battery size for the tablet is 6 cell, vs 9 cell for the non tablet, but the 6 cell on the tablet sticks out the back like the non tablet 9 cell
Otherwise, the i7 tablet doesn't get USB 3.0. The main bonuses are the touchscreen and wacom input. Although if you really have no need then just get the normal one. Oh and IPS is guaranteed on the tablet whereas it's a shitshoot with the non tablet
desu, I wouldn't bother with touchscreen outside of Windows
The T420 (assuming integrated) uses the same processor line as the X220 but has larger heatsinks so it should arguably be cooler. But it really shouldn't be a major issue unless you max it out on a regular basis on your lap
As for upgradability, unless you're hell bent on daring to stick a new processor in, the X220 is more or less the same. Just hope it's a 1600x900 otherwise you may want to find that panel or your experience will be slightly more miserable than the X220

As a matter of personal opinion - after getting used to the 12.5" form factor, I've grown to love it and now 14" is too big for everyday use for me

>>
>>51664523
It's the same 1366x768 as the lower T420. It's usable but fitting two windows side by side is generally a miserable experience
Bear in mind that the crappier of ThinkPad displays are quite shit, even by TN standards

I'm of an age where 4:3 was the norm and the loss of real estate is murder on my eyes. With this, it's almost like 2 10 inch screens turned sideways. Not very impressive, but better than everything else I've used. Especially compared to higher resolution screens like the mac where you can't fucking see anything no matter how big it is. It's fine for some light document editing or web browsing, seems snappier under Windows 10 than Windows 7, but I would definitely not want one as my primary computer. The normal T420 is said to support OS X better, and replacement parts are roughly twice as easy to find on Ebay (and cheaper, too.)
The slim model is lighter and slimmer (NO SHIT!) with USB3.0, but all the ports are on the back (what the fug.) You could probably just shove a cheap USB3.0 expresscard into the normal T420 and match the T420s's single USB3.0 port, with ports to spare. And yes, the battery can be 9-cell on the normal model. It sticks out the back about one inch, but it looks fucking cool anyway. I do not know whether the battery is as easy to replace on the slim model, as it seems to just go in some random location like on the T30.
>>
It seems that one of the screw-holes for my X201's keyboard, on the lower-left side, has fallen off and journeyed somewhere inside the laptop. If I take out the keyboard and put it on my workbench, can I just crazy-glue the standoff/hole back onto the underside of the keyboard? I've used this shit to repair many non-electronic parts in laptops, before, and it usually keeps them in place long after the part's lifespan ends. I don't want the keyboard to pop out when I pull on the palmrest, it looks weak.

Yea i've seen the edge detection issues, but for doodling it won't be that much of a problem, I wouldn't draw towards the very edge most of the time and when I do I could just zoom in to the edges of my drawings or whatever. 1366x768 is decent enough on 12.5inch, and I can plug it into my monitors when at home anyway. IPS ghosting (on my X220 at least) is pretty minimal. I draw for a hobby, I don't require accurate colours for a job or anything.
Still a shame it's not perfect though.

The X61 and X61s don't seem that different to me. I don't know much, but they look pretty identical. I also love the taller shape of the laptop - the screen is a little more raised from the keyboard and you have a longer palm rest this way, which makes typing nicer for me.

Clit is a meme left over from the days when all touchpads were resistive, total shit with sticky plastic.

They would actually make sense on 7" laptops because of space constraints, except those all just use cap touchscreens now.

It's nice to have the trackpoint as an additional option, but somewhat irritating to use when it's the only pointing option (x200) since we've been spoiled by good capacitive touchpads now.

The three buttons are great though.

I bought a chinkshit battery, it *sorta* works. Laptop won't recognize the battery on startup, it just gives: 0190 Critical Battery Error on bootup regardless of state of charge. What does work is to plug it into power until you're past BIOS, then you can disconnect the power. Usually like 10 minutes into linux suddenly it will start recognizing the battery again, sometimes not.

I'm using it now as a shitpost machine around the house (on battery) but it wouldn't be acceptable as a general-purpose field machine due to the need to jump start it every time.

Currently in talks with the seller to get a refund, he's playing coy/like it's my fault but I only paid $15 or so, not too chuffed about it

How the hell did you get a W530 for $400? I got my W520 for free and I'm still jelly.

Breddy gud, you paid less than $1 per FPS. Now play Fallout 4.

How bad was the SEO? Like did they even mention it was a W530?

What a great deal. How much RAM is in it now?

16 gb and a 500gb hdd, has 2 more slots. it had w530 at the end. biggest reason for k2000m is for 4k 60hz monitor driving which should be good for the next 3 years or so

T420 good for a daily carry?
I'm finishing up computer and electrical engineering and I have to carry a laptop with me quite a bit.
its down to a T420 with 1600x900res or a x220,
-
I've found in work i mostly do very light coding, read tons of fucking pdfs on figuring out bullshit.
I occasionally work on CNC / CAD software at work as well, mostly for testing purposes, After everything is set up we typically use much more appropriate computers for the jobs.
It's a somewhat industrial environment, so I rarely get to sit at an actual desk, it's mostly find a clear enough spot and plop down for work.
-
I've considered buying a new laptop, but they seem to have pretty meh specs, unless you get a workstation replacement, or a gaming one.. and even still they're all plastic pieces of shit.
Tested an older edge, better than other laptops, but still not rock solid.
Want just a beater to use that's powerful enough.
-
I've been using an older netbook and it's just fucking painful.
I haven't with a bigger laptop in so long, what if i can't handle it's 14 inches of glory!?
Seriously though,a t420 isn't a huge pain in the ass to carry around is it?
>>
I can get a T410 for relatively cheap in europoor funds in good condition.

Should I go for it?
>>
>>51673402
I've edc'd a t420 for the past few months, I just toss it in my backpack, but carrying it isnt a bother. I have maybe another 5lbs of shit in my bag on occasion and it isn't that big of a deal then either.
>>
>>51673656
So whats the con with the slim t430s compared to its norm bro?
>>
>>51659007

what does "locked bios" mean?
>>
>>51673402
>T420 or X220
>CAD
While I can't personally testify for it's carryability, I'm going to vouch for a T420 with dedicated graphics so you can actually run CAD decently.
>>
>>51673604

Sure, I'm from latin america and a T410 was the best I could get.

16:10 aspect ratio is a godsend, and it's pretty sturdy, make sure you get the 1440x900 display.

You'll probably miss your mac's display but can't beat having a system that will probably outlast you.
>>
>>51673877
I'll keep an eye out for one.

From my experience a lot of the software we run, works pretty well on i5 machines, even with integrated graphics. Just need plenty of ram. Just don't plan on multitasking like a boss.
CADS fairly minor, any and all intensive work is to be done at a desk on a workstation.

Just gonna nab a T420, if i need super portability that bad later on i can break out a shitty netbook.

I know this may sound weird, but hear me out. I think the keyboard on my T410s is better than the one on my W520. Nust has more of a "clicky" feel to it. More tactile feedback. But they look like the same keyboard. Was there some sort of degradation from the xx10 to the xx20 series, or are there different suppliers, meaning not all Thinkpad keyboards were created equal? I wonder if the two can be swapped.
>>
Why are x220 and t420 still the preferred choice over newer models?
>>
>>51675777
Literally memes
>>
>>51675777
Most won't compromise on a chiclet keyboard.

There hasn't much by way of performance improvements since the 220 series.

People are holding out for the retro thinkpad.

Poverty.

Hey guys.. I want to upgrade my screen on my Thinkpad T440P, to a 1080p IPS.. Where can I get a high quality screen that has been tested for cheep?
>>
>>51675721
different suppliers.

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/2pc75z/my_thoughts_after_replacing_my_t420_keyboard_alps/?sort=old

There was other result that linked to a japanese site which also confirms those FRU's for each keyboard.

>too late
>have to fix this myself and don't know how

At least the T420 has good documentation.

I either order the part or do some weird fix i saw floating around on google.

Bought the thing in mint condition and it was so good. I only noticed the wobble when my friend pointed it out.

Using this thing while riding public transit probably accelerated this. If anyone has some tips, i'd be all ears for when I attempt the fix. ;__;

uhhh, screw the loose screw? You have to open the computer.

For an x220 should I get a slice or a 9 cell? Slice reportedly has better battery life but its a 6 cell. Forgive my retardation, but wouldn't more cells mean longer life?

Has anyone managed to get the fingerprint reader working in Linux?

Mine shows up as 08ff:2810, which looks like it should be supported by fprint. Somewhat hesitant to install a bunch of libraries just for shits and giggles though since I currently have a working system with fast boot time and not sure I want to jinx it.

Any experiences?

GUYS!

I just got an X220 from an eBay bid.

It has these specs:
Intel i7-2520m
4Gb RAM
160Gb SSD
USB 3.0, etc.

And I got all of this for €220.

I'm pretty ecstatic and only have two questions:
1. Is this a good buy?
2. What is your experience with the x220 and what was your favourite linux ditro? Further, how was the battery life with the distribution?
>>
did you get this from the syracuse guy? mine is running great got it today also. It runs a little hot though? 60c when browsing 90c when watching videos/playing hearthstone

also have 2011 mbp, ordered the 450s today, with i5 1080p ips and 4g ram, probably will buy ssd and extra ram when it ships
does it have extra empty slot for ram, or only 1 used up by 4g?
>>
>>51672743
How are you connecting it? ExpressCard?

Congratulations, I'd watched that auction too and did expect it to rise further, the same model in exact same condition sold for 300€ just a couple days ago:

Do you plan on replacing the broken palmrest?
