Quite a bit will be changing tomorrow. I'm all giddy with excitement. Also building a secondary build to be used for nothing but school etc. Will be using AMD Sempron 3850, radeon 6450, and spare Samsung 250gb ssd. Just trying to find a qt3.14 itx case from Microcenter.

It isn't reading the clock speed at all on that page, it's just the name of the CPU. Intel have been putting the stock clock speed in the CPU's name for a while now.

>>
>>51680412
>i3
Your upgrade priorities should be the processor and an SSD, in that order.
>>
>>51680441
What's wrong with the CPU? It's performing just fine. I already get fast boot times, so what's the point of an SSD other than lower failiure rate?
>>
>>51680412
What do you use your PC for?
>>
>>51680470
Gaming, occasional CAD work.
I'm thinking of shilling the PC off to eBay for $950AUD as new, as it's currently being relatively underused.
>>
>>51680249
I've removed a fair amount of the drives already.
ISOs, different versions of different things, some hard to obtain things from up to 15 years ago, some stuff from my previous jobs etc.

First time in one of these threads, rate my speccy I guess? Build is pretty shitty, built it for $800 two years ago and have done no upgrades since.
>>
>>51680482
An SSD helps certain games run a lot better and shortens loading screens by a ton. It's not just for faster boot times, and it'll help your system run faster overall. The i3 could possibly be bottlenecking the 380, though I'm not 100% sure on that one.
>>
>>51680523
Just looked up the games I mostly play, and it seems there's ana verage oof 12s load time difference on an SSD vs a 7200rpm HDD. I'll look into getting an i5, though.

meh, it's better than just i3/i5/i7
>>
>>51680604

RAM - I agree that maybe the ram speed was abit silly to buy into, tho the 32gigs was worth it for me...

Mobo - gotta say it is a beast, amazing quality. Next comp I build will have something like it.

SSD - I actually only had 1 ssd on the initial build, got another one about 12 months ago, then the 850pro last week. Usage wise - 1 is O/S, 1 for STEAM games and the last is kinda empty atm.

i7 = good.

o/c - yeah it's just automatic asus o/c. I got lazy, cooler is a Corsair H100i I think.

optical - actually good for me since I play bluray discs (movies) on my comp and even install bought games (actual physical copies).

The 'MHz' figure in ram advertising should be MT/s - it refers to the number of transfers per second. DDR RAM transfers twice per clock cycle, once on the rising edge and once on the falling edge, so that actual clock peed driving 1600MT/s DDR3 is indeed 800Mhz. Why it reports as 799 and not 800 idk, might be a rounding error, might be that the actual clock is really that speed because there can be some slight variation.

you'll want a GPU upgrade soon, start saving.
Besides that i'd go up to 16GB of RAM because it is so cheap (~$30-40 for 8GB)

>>51682338
I'd get 2x4GB to keep costs down, but if you have the money 2x8GB would be more future proof (though it is unlikely you will need more than 16GB of RAM in the next few years).

2x8GB will give a slight performance advantage over 4x4GB, but it wouldnt be enough to spend a lot more $ over.

So if you can upgrade to 2x8GB for cheap, go ahead. But upgrading to 4x4GB wouldnt be terrible either.

I got my new video card today. My budget build is complete.

Bought the PC off of a dude on craigslist about a month ago for $240, then I added a 8GB stick of ram for $40, and I bought the 950 during black friday for $135 (total with tax/shipping). All in all, I paid $410 for this.

How much do you think I could sell the 8800 GTX for that came with the PC? I'm going to make some money back selling it to somebody.

Pretty normal idle temp if you have one of those cards that turns off the fan at idle.

Otherwise download Precision X or MSI afterburner and change up your fan profile to get it to a comfortable level for you.

All Strix cards turn the fans off at idle. Just set up a custom fan curve if you'd prefer to lower idle temperatures 20 degrees rather than have total silence.

the temps were nowhere near that high, either. Standard mac hardware is shit for gayming, thunderbolt 2 and a GTX 960 = decent game performance, but the CPU is a massive bottleneck.
