As far as "No Fuss" DE's are concerned, Xfce probably has it beat. Personally I use Gnome on my laptop just because 1) It's pretty comfyand 2) The activities menu is really nice to use once you get the hang of it.

I've always really hated gnome for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. It doesn't "feel" right, for whatever reason.
Actually, the openbox approach is probably my favorite desktop metaphor to date. I hated the KDE workspace weirdness, and ended up disliking the start-menu-by-another-name too.
