m50x are good, far better than most. Try them in store
>>

Do you care about style more than the sound? Why do they NEED to be white?
>>
So my Sony MDR-v6 came in and the head clamp's a bit too tight for me. I also think the "thumping" is too pronounced, which I thought would be more subdued based on the reviews.

Would the Bose SoundTrue (for $75) be better for me? I'm mostly looking to upgrade to "better" sound compared to my Sennheiser 201's but not at the expense of comfort.

no, that was my faggot brother who went into my room to take my headphones only to bitch about them.

this was his post

"Got a chance to listen to the HD 598 next to my K702 and K553 pro
I cant see why people shill for sennheiser, they sound like veiled mudded shit in comparison to even the K553 pro on the left, they are total shit and they look the part to. They use shitty materials on the headband that will flake off in a year or so. Do not buy sennheiser, they really are shit unless you got them for 95$ on black friday."

here is the truth.

the middle headphones of his is a year newer than my headphones and is falling apart, he just had to replace the cable due to damage, and the headband plastic on both sides broke. for some reason he says they are better than my hd598, however having listened to both, the difference is negligible at best, i think the base sounds better, and that i think comes from they sound so close it may as well be a wash.

as for the closed ones of the left, those are easily better, then the others, but for some reason he does not like them.

onto his "they flake" which is absolute bullshit, there is 1 crack in them because of how cold my room gets, other than the crack there is no damage.

and as to why i have hd598, i would have been just happy with 558's and take the foam out, however i liked the look of the 598 and they improved the plastic so it wont crack after the first run of them... 2 years on, not even a hint of a crack on the plastic.

on a side note, the 598's and the 555's i have are the only headphone i have ever used that i forget im wearing them due to comfort, the akg in the middle never gets comfortable and the one on the end makes you sweat due to material.

They were all proposals that Olive et.al went through in their papers, but I don't recall any difference.

Preliminary JBL room EQ targets for speakers aimed for a general tilt, but in headphone studies they immediately gave way to the 2 point shelf EQ they use now.

No. All it states is the preference in a study involving hundreds of listeners. What it offers to the listener is a general tonal profile to attempt equalization towards to suit their preference. In short, a bass lift over DF target(flat), and a general treble cut.

So my hp50 just came in. here are my abbreviated impressions:

sounds great when it seals. comfort average, poor fit and questionable build decisions (though quality of the build is high). I have sealing problems with a lot of headphones that others don't so it could just be me though. I can get a good seal with some simple modding I did. sound is just like what IF measurements show, very balanced, slightly dark. for home use though, I like my mad dogs better in almost every way, even if they're a bit less balanced.

I can post my longer impressions if anyone wants, I just didn't want to blog it up.

Maybe try M40x. They have a flatter response, though, which means less bass. Only potential problem is comfort, which I've heard people complain about, but I've been able to wear my M50s for hours on end so that is probably down to how big your ears and head are.

Don't know about a consensus but the Nighthawk is weird.

Put it this way, they were talking about nice engineering stuff, making a very competent, very low distortion headphone, with a little isolation and good acoustic design. It seemed alright, right up until they mentioned their idea of FR, which was completely off base as to how you hear.

So what you have is a headphone with a little bit of isolation (semi-open), extremely low distortion, but a fucked up frequency response. It sounds pretty murky, I would not have it without equalization.

They're comfortable.
It's a tough rec otherwise.

>>51676717
They are quite different sounding, so it isn't clear cut. It comes down to preference.

400i has very flat and deep bass, not emphasized at all.
650 bass is boosted, and so is the lower mid, which lowers the clarity a bit.

400i upper mid is weak, so vocal and other instruments can sound a bit distant.
650 is pretty much on point here.

650 treble is reduced a bit, reduces harshness, not necessarily best clarity.
400i has a peak. I don't want to call it bright or harsh, but with the wrong sounds (and low tolerance) it can be a bit much.

Can't believe it's this low in price rn, but this is my gaming pair. Dunno about 4-8 hours, its perfectly tight, but can get warm if that's your main issue. You're going to get that with basically all closed tho.
>>
>>51677468
with headphones it's ear to speaker, a seal makes it so theres no other things
in real life, you can have shit in the way and things that dampen and reflect sound differently, and the shape of the room matters

of course, headphones have their own similar problems, but theyre due to just with the size, structure of your ear, you cant mod that. you can mod the headphone, but eq is easier because there less obstruction
>>
>>51677197
>it comes from reflections
No, it doesn't come from room reflections. No reflections are explicitly needed, it works in free space.

>>51677468
Most room treatments only affect FR slightly if you don't go into house remodeling and extensive furniture rearrangement.

EQ does something very specific and limited. It's not mutually exclusive, it's simply not the same thing.
Now, if you were talking about, eg, SRC, that's different. That gives you even more control than modding.

I mean, seriously. 1/3 octave EQ? That's only marginally more precise than a knob labelled 'tone'.
>>
>>51677579
>some reason
$0.75CD = $1USD

>>
>>51677713
>>very specific and limited
>For better or worse it really isn't, especially with headphone listening..
It's a broadband minimum phase filter. You can only do so much with those.
>>
>>51677670
that doesn't mean m50s should be 300$
>>
>>51677743
Works fine on the mostly minimum phase device called a single driver headphone, but no one is talking out about broadband filters. Parametric EQ only
>>
>>51677803
>Works fine on the mostly minimum phase device called a single driver headphone
*sigh*.
It can't do anything about nulls or phase defects. It can't do anything about high-Q resonances. These are the biggest real defects that headphones have.
You can get used to virtually any subtle coloration, which is about all that EQ can change.

>nulls or phase defects
Time delays (adding all pass) not resulting in notches are of dubious relevance. Phasing is even less a concern.

>It can't do anything about high-Q resonances
It absolutely can if it is position invariant. There are many headphones in which this is the case and others in which it is not.

>subtle coloration, which is about all that EQ can change
It's already been shown that the high-Q stuff is the least audible for a given magnitude. Major characteristic change can be made by frequency response, which tends to dominate other parameters, which is fixed by EQ..
>>
>>51677941
>It's already been shown that the high-Q stuff is the least audible for a given magnitude.
only if the audio is feaureless and broadband. That high-Q stuff is where the weird sibilances in, eg, the DT880 come from. They don't pop out often, but when they do, it's a _painful_ defect.

I have had the HD 650s for years. Recently bough X2's as a Christmas present and currently listening to them.

They are really easy to drive, comfortable, easy to wear and durable. Seems like the perfect entry level headphones.

But I don't like how recessed the mids are. And having used HD 650s for years, the treble sometimes feels painful and stings compared to them.

If I was going to buy a 2nd pair of headphones for myself it would probably either be DT880 or HD 600. Can't decide if its any point getting 600s since they are so similar in build and fidelity to the 650s. Or if getting DT 880s would just be a mistake if I only want something different from 880s and feels different to wear.
