Stupid Questions Thread - /SQT/

Post your stupid questions here.

For every question you ask, try to answer two questions. This increases the chance that everyone gets an answer.

Complete tech newfag here.

If my motherboard is overheating like crazy, talking 60-69 °C while doing nothing but using a browser in a fairly cool room and unobstructed airflow in the case, with my CPU hovering around 50-57 °C , does it mean it's time to replace the thermal paste? Is that the issue?

And if so, is this something I could potentially do on my own or would it be better if I asked someone more versed in this stuff to help me out?

replacing paste is a good first step in troubleshooting overheating.
yes it's very simple to do yourself. check some guides on youtube (linus tech tips is very good channel).
and remember, dont use more than a small pea-sized blob of paste.

have you used the drive in the meantime? if so, all of your deleted files are overridden and gone forever

Cheers, anon, and thank you for your help. Hopefully this will resolve the overheating issue.

I already watched a few videos on how to apply it, and most of them say to put the pea bit in the center and then press it lightly with some kind of transparent plastic to spread it neatly around.

>>
>>51665327
for the cpu some people recommend not spreading it before putting down the cpu cooler to prevent airpockets that could cause higher temps.

for the mobo it could be good to spread it on both the chip and the heatsink as there wont be the same high pressure applied on this when you screw it tight like the cpu cooler. also if you do this dont use as much paste as the cpu cooler.

and remember when you tighten screws to do them in an X configuration and a little bit on each screw so it doesnt get too much pressure on one side or corner.

>>51665356
yeah, depending on the size of the file, it could have been partly overwritten the same day if you used the drive.
>>
>>51665419

The files I wanted to recover were pictures (old screenshots of games) and I've been saving and moving other screenshots to the same two locations (in the game's folder in C/Games and in a dedicated screenshot folder), so yeah they're probably lost forever.

I recently bought an ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q monitor which is capable of 1440p @ 144Hz. I also bought an MSI Radeon R9 390 GPU to go with it. It's all connected, using Windows 7, latest GPU driver (Catalyst Control Center 15.8, pagacking version 15.30.1025) is installed and it seems to work okay. The problem is that in the system settings, I can only set the refresh rate to max 120 Hz. The monitor and GPU are both capable of achieving 144Hz @ 1440p, and I use a DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor to transmit video.

Why can't I set the refresh rate higher than 120Hz when the monitor in theory (AND SPECS!) support it?

Does DDR4 RAM transfer at the same speed as DDR3 RAM?

>for the mobo it could be good to spread it on both the chip and the heatsink

I'm sorry, what? Maybe it's because English isn't my mother tongue but are you saying I should apply the TP to the side facing the motherboard as well, not just the cooler? Or am I just misunderstanding you?

what matters is the algorithm used to compress the files. 7zip is the better software since it supports the most, and it's free and open source.

>>51665693
C# or C++

>>51665718
yes and no. depends on the timings and other stuff.

>>51665819
yes, but now that i think about it that would be silly.
btw, you're talking about the motherboard chipset cooler, yes? not the cpu cooler because they are 2 different things.
you should apply the thermal paste to the CPU, not the CPU cooler.
same goes for the mobo chipset depending on if it uses thermal paste in the first place.
>>
>>51665871
>what matters is the algorithm used to compress the files

What's the best algorithm used to compress the files then?
>>
>>51665871

My mobo is ASRock N68C-S UCC.

Yes, I know it's fairly old. My whole PC is pretty much outdated, but I won't be getting a new one before February, so I'm stuck with that.

>you should apply the thermal paste to the CPU, not the CPU cooler.

Yes, I know that much at least.

>in windows or in games
In both. The GPU generates framerates higher than 120Hz in games, no problem, but the monitor won't go higher than 120Hz. I got a CD with the monitor, it contained 3 folders, 1 containing nVidia gpu drivers, one with the manual in different languages and one with a WHQL driver (the folder contains pg278q.cat, PG278Q.icm and PG278Q.inf).

I don't really know what to do with this, but I tried googling and found out about PnPUtil, so I installed it (at least it said it completed successfully) in an elevated command prompt, but I don't know what it did really. I haven't restarted my computer yet because I'm in an online game of Heroes 3 with a friend of mine, could this be the last missing piece of the puzzle?

Am I missing more?

Is ipv4 going to be obsolete very soon? Would learning about ipv4 do more harm than good for me? Why is it still taught in school then?

>yes and no. depends on the timings and other stuff.
Is it possible for 2,400m MHz DDR4 RAM to transfer above 38.4GB/s without overclocking the 2,400 MHz frequency?

Because if not then DDR4 looks like fucking dogshit for APUs since even entry level dGPUs like the R7 360 have 96GB/s for vram (effc. 6,000 MHz @ 128-bit).

>>51665892
i dont know pros and cons of them, but it depends on the type of files you want to compress, their size and a few other things.
download and install 7zip and play around with the different options or google it.

>>51665904
ya, the mobo chipset is under the golden heatsink. probably uses ceramic thermal paste.
clean with alcohol or gasoline to remove old paste from chipset and cooler. use thin plastic sheet like credit card to spread new paste on mobo chipset, pop back the cooler.
i recommend a ceramic thermal paste.

>>51665993
download and install microsoft windows dvd usb tool to make a bootable usb windows install.
plug it into the computer and boot, during boot (right after POST) press F8 to get menu and choose to boot from the USB drive.
normal windows install from there.
if you dont get the menu when pressing F8, check you BIOS boot option/order and make sure it's enabled removable device or similar name.
Repeatedly hit F8 from the moment you hit the power button until it shows up.

>>51666032
download the latest nvidia drivers from their website.
download the latest monitor drivers from asus website.
Yes, deffo try rebooting.

>>51666076
it already is. no. because ipv6 havent replaced it yet.

>>51666083
Yes, if the timings are low enough it will be faster.
DDR4 is not any faster than DDR3 for regular use (office, web, gaming).
But if i remember correct, APUs rely more on RAM speed for better performance, so you should check some APU DDR4 reviews/tests/benchmarks to make sure if it makes a difference or not.
>>
>>51666076
Wouldn't say "very soon" because the ipv6 is still not the standard used today in most homes. I believe ipv4 will live alongside ipv6 for a long time.

I've built a PC one year ago, everything worked flawlessly, now I can feel a barely noticeable smell of burn (or plastic?), I'm even unable to smell it right now, but not sure. Everything still works perfect, CPU temperature never went higher than 35, yet it's really worrying me.

>>
>>51666120
But I have an AMD GPU and the monitor doesn't have anything to do with nVidia, it would not make sense to install the nVidia drivers? Would it?

Anyway, I already did all this except installed AMD's latest driver from their website, installed the monitor driver that came with the CD, but haven't rebooted yet. Will try this later today. Thanks for the tips :)

Yes, Windows looks at the serial number of the hard drive.
>>
>>51666412
I believe you could clone your existing system partition, store it on your SSD and plug it in. Not 100% tho.

GPUs install themselves through Windows Update these days. Just plug it in and wait for it to figure it out after you turn it on.
>>
When i installed my new motherboard i acidentally skipped over instaling the drivers from the cd that came with it. Now windows wont boot cause the mobo doesnt have the right drivers and just goes into a loop of the screen saying windows repair.

It didn't feel hot, yet fan in PSU makes cracking sounds. If I turn on LinX, I get 55C temperature and it eventually goes higher to 60, but that's the some "hot" instructions in bench, usually even if I run CPU-intensive apps it doesn't go higher than 35-40.

My audio interface and MIDI keyboard are somehow picky about USB cables. The interface sometimes randomly dis/reconnects while the MIDI keyboard apparently stops sending messages even though the hardware appears responsive and windows still recognizes it. I've tried this with some new USB cables (on the same ports) and some of them displayed this issue while others didn't.
Are some USB cables actually better than others? If so, how do I tell? If not, what then?
>>
>>51666369
it's almost identical to the cpu. you pop off the two retaining pins, remove the heatsink, take a qtip or similar with some alcohol on it and rub off the old stuff, you'll probably have to use a few qtips until it's no longer dirty after you scrub.
then just do like the vids show how to apply the cpu paste (small drop off paste, take thin plastic and spread it as thinly and evenly you can) and pop back the heatsink.

>>51666412
it's recommended you reinstall the OS because it's just much easier. if you dont want to you will have to make an image backup and use something like clonezilla to mirror it to the SSD.

You need drivers for the graphics card. windows can download and install it via windows update, but it's recommended you download it manually from AMD or NVIDIA website.

>>51666443

This couldn't have caused the sudden overheating though...could it? Because the PC seemed okay until it just went absolutely insane for a few seconds and BSOD'd and now it's getting warm (and the fan runs more).
I can understand dirt would pile up (though it's 2years old), but why would it just suddenly fuck my shit up?

Also.
I heard from a guy that he fried something with a vacuum cleaner by spinning the fan the other way and turning the motor into a turbine. Is that a load of bull or should I take precautions (and if so, what)?
>>
>>51667013
yea, just use the code to activate it
>>
>>51667050
The short version is, yes, because of the way a motor works, if you make it spin, it will create a current, and the bigger the speed, the higher the current.

But as long as you don't use a fucking 4000W vacuum cleaner at full blast and make your fan go 99999 RPM (you'll hear when it's getting ridiculous), you will be okay. But yes, making the fan spin like crazy _might_ fry something.

Well yeah, all traffic has to be encrypted so it adds a little overhead.
However (depending on how old your router is) the difference should be barely noticeable

I don't think the type of security affects the speed of the connection.

Make him run a speedtest on speedtest.net. Then you will know if the speed is shitty or not. Make sure others on the network aren't doing heavy downloading at the same time as he's doing the test.

Thanks.
Though I just googled this a bit and read that a can of compressed air is a safer alternative. I don't mind the 5€ so I'll try that. (really I just find the idea of literally buying a can of air too funny to pass up)

Still, though...could dirt have caused such a sudden burst of heat? Everything seemed fine a day ago.
The fan got really loud, but I didn't check if there was air blowing out so I guess it could've jammed or something? But would that be so bad? Like those times when you put a little more strain on your computer and the fan speeds up - say the fan jammed at such a time - would the computer really just burst into hellfire in a matter of seconds? Because I really felt it heat up fast.
And it's just that if it wasn't the dust's fault that it went insane at the time, it seems strange that NOW it would be the dust's fault it's running a bit hotter.
Could anything have happened to the thermal paste? I know roughly fuck all about thermal paste so that worries me a bit.

>>
>>51667517
I see I've been reading a bit too fast!

If you heard the fans speed up, then the fan is okay! It was probably just a reaction to the CPU getting a massive load to deal with which may have caused the high temperature. If the fan speeds up when it gets hot, the fan is doing what it's supposed to do, sorry for misleading you a bit.

As for the overheating, have you checked the BIOS settings if anything has changed? You haven't overclocked anything? Changed anything? You could always reset back to default BIOS settings, it won't affect anything else.

Apart from that, I don't really know what might have caused the high temperature, or the recurring high temperature after.

The only things I can think of doing before that was experimenting with the audio interface. Plugging it in and out of a USB hub and switching between Focusrite's default drivers and ASIO4ALL to see if it affects the latency. Changing the latency setting etc.

I've since upgraded the Focusrite drivers and the changelog mentioned fixing possible blue screens on some systems when the interface is plugged in and out via USB3. No mention of overheating, but sounds close enough anyway.

Still, something must have gone back there and I dunno what.

ok i thought of making a thread to ask this, but at the same time I think it's pretty fucking weird and stupid so hear this:

I have a PC here that stopped loading XP (shit's old and used for something simple) so I fix it and everything goes well, until they turn it on again after i made sure it was working

i thought the hard drive was just busted because it's a 60 gb SATA from who knows when, so i replace it with a new one with Win7

the thing works perfectly and i set it up, but surprise, windows shits all over itself at startup, it manages to load a couple times but it just freezes randomly without BSODing or anything, until I manage to turn it off, then at the very end it flashes in blue

so i bring it back with me and hook it up, IT JUST WORKS

/g/ opinion on corsair AiO units?

>Inb4 meme etc

I know there are some on /g/ who use AiO units and I'm looking for their opinion on namely the H80i GT. Ia there a lot of pump noise? What is their life span like? And failed parts/leaks?

Im currently on an i5 4690k air cooled and am upgrading to a 5930k soon. My large air cooler didn't come with brackets for lga 2011 by default so Im in the market for a new cooler

Reviews seem to say the H80i GT is like the best 120mm unit money can buy. Can corsair units be used effectively without their link software?

Ive only owned one aio unit before and it was the CM Nepton 280L and the pump failed in 3 weeks of use. Ive dont custom liquid in the past but my case is now the R5 and I dont want to remove the fan covers because that would reduce the sound dampening so Im looking for the best 120mm AiO to mount on the rear exhaust.

I'd be looking to squeeze at least 4.wghz out of the 5930k which seems entirely possible based on reviews of the cooler. This cooler also pushes aside top end air sokutions like the NH-D15 and Dark Rock pro 3 so Im bot really considering those.

Help is appreciated!

Firefox kept shitting the bed and fucking up my session. Either it would give me a "restore session" option which would be missing a lot of things I had added since, or it would simply give nothing at all and leave me on a new session.
I tried switching to Icecat, and started experiencing the same problem after some time.
Aside from HTTPS Everywhere, I'm using a completely different set of add-ons on Icecat.
The problem seems to be most likely to occur if I leave the browser up for long periods of time.

I really need to rant now here, I can't hold these shitfeelings in anymore.
I try to get ANYTHING that lets me create *.apk files running for like 3 days now.
First android-studio, which seems to suck-ass because it can't connect to the android-emulator and keeps downloading more and more shit.
Then netbeans-IDE with the android SDK and now eclipse (which worked a few years ago in highschool solala) and I fucking hat it.

The fucking android-emulator created by AVD wasn't even booted after waiting for like 30 minutes. Meanwhile it connected itself to localhost and kept sending packages. The moment I killed it (after waiting over half an hour) it just stuck on the ANDROID screen booting....

I FUCKING HATE THIS SHIT!

Is there now fucking fucking way to just say... take any other language and make a apk out of it or anything else that will run natively on android without any thirtparty bullshit?

/g/ I know we all hate it but thanks for listening.

Ok so I bought a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

I am using a partitioned 1TB hard drive at the moment - one partition for system and some programs (100GB) and the other partition for the rest

What I want to do is:
>plug in SSD
>install windows 7 on the SSD
>boot windows from the SSD
>delete the 100GB system partition from the hard drive and merge it with the rest of the drive

Is the last step doable? Without losing the rest of the data? How do I do it?
>>
>>51672506
Why is he selling a brand new cpu (i7 6700)?
You cant just buy a few parts from each?

>>51672602
unplug all drives except the ssd when you install so you get all system files and the master boot record on it. windows install likes to be a dick and put shit on secondary drives for some reason.

after you installed the os on the ssd, plug the other drives back in and boot from the ssd, go into partition manager, delete the old system partition, then select the partition you want to expand and max it out.

you can't 'merge' partitions, just delete, shrink and expand.

and you will only lose the data on the partitions you expand/reformat.
>>
>>51672700
>and you will only lose the data on the partitions you DELETE/reformat.

>>
>>51672602
>Is the last step doable? Without losing the rest of the data? How do I do it?
Without being 100% sure: I think you can only merge partitions down.
Say you have 2 partitions, one partition is physically placed earlier on the harddrive than the other. Now you can "merge" the later partition onto the earlier partition without losing data on the earlier partition by deleting the later one and expanding the first partition, but not the other way around.
>>

No, they don't know each other. The guy selling the i7 4770 with accessories is moving and wants to get rid of his system. The i7 6700 guy works for a computer store and apparently he's getting the max 'tier' of whatever gaming computer they sell as a manager perk, so he's selling his current build.

So, which would you pick?

Need help.

I haven't built a computer in a very long time. Right now I have an Radeon R7, I'm trying to install an R9 380.

There are two PCI-E power connections on the graphics. I haven't seen anything like this before.

Am I required to power both of these female connections on the card, or are they for selecting either 8-pin or 6-pin PCI-E rails from the PSU?

Second: My PSU has two 6-pin PCI-E rails. Can I plug both of those rails into the graphics card or do I require a Y-splitter for only one rail?

Thanks.

if you have internet access just go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers.

if you dont have internet on that computer, install network drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard, or use a different computer to download the network drivers and put on a USB flash drive.

either way, i wouldnt buy the one with 750ti because that graphics card is bottleneck as fuck for an i7. and it feels to me like it's a pre-built computer (no one with a brain would buy that combo, only idiots that buy prebuilds would buy that shit).

so, unless you can sell the 750ti and buy a better card, dont get that system. also dont get it if it's a prebuilt.

>>51672911
>Am I required to power both of these female connections on the card, or are they for selecting either 8-pin or 6-pin PCI-E rails from the PSU?
You have to plug both in.

>Can I plug both of those rails into the graphics card or do I require a Y-splitter for only one rail?
Are you sure you understand what rails are here ?
In either case, 2 rails is fine. Don't get a Y-splitter, that's asking for a house fire.
If your PSU doesn't have an 8-pin PCI-e cable, you're most likely going to need a new PSU because graphics cards tend to not be very happy with using a 6-pin cable in an 8-pin slot.
>>
>>51672911
You need to connect all of your power connections on your graphics cards, so both the 8 and 6 pin connections will need to be fulfilled.

Consult your graphic card's wattage requirements and insure your power supply can supply enough of that wattage on it's 12v rail.

In general you should only connect the correct power cables directly - with no splitters or adapters, because in some cases your power supply won't bother to supply a 12v on cables not intended to supply that power, which would short out the components.
>>

Are you implying the windows updates arn't the problem?
Granted i may be missing a few drivers for other things, so i'm going to check in the order that you've given.

no, sun exposure cannot damage an LCD screen.

the melting point of this plastic much higher than what the sun shining through a window can reach.
only thing i'd check is if you have any glass ornaments, sculptures or lamps that could reflect and focus the sun's rays on the TV (like a magnifying glass) and remove them from the room.

Yes, you must plug all power pins on the GPU for it to work properly.

Never use a splitter on the PCI-E power cables from the PSU.
The R9 380 has two 6pin power connections, you have to use both rails from the PSU to power it.

what are some games that has the most beautiful graphics?

there are no driver updates for the CPU, dude. you need to check the mobo manufacturer's site for chipset, audio, network, storage etc. drivers.

you can uninstall those KB updates later so just go ahead and update everything now.

>>51672945
check tech forums. i'd personally stay away from them. if you really want a cheap good monitor, look for the rebranded LG monitors from korea.

>>51673084
windows updates are almost never the issue. always check chipset drivers first.

Awesome; thanks for the clear and quick reply!

And to further clarify, if I always used a computer against this window, I'd imagine I'd be able to damage its innards as it failed to exhaust all the heat it was generating properly.

But with an HDTV, I don't have to worry about it running all day while also being "baked" in the sun all the while?

I have an old 1155 socket motherboard with an i3, should I go ahead and buy a new motherboard with a newer socket or should I look and see if there are still viable processors that fit? Looking to do modern gaming, have the graphics card for it, just wondering about the processor.

Is it ok of there is some paste in the cranny between the cpu and socket? and if its bad, is there a way to get it out without removing the cpu?
>>
my gpu fan/fans are rattling and its annoying as fuck

ive seen some people dismantle the entire heatsink and that seems like a pain in the ass

also saw some guy just add additional support with some homemade shit

some other guy just sprayed wd 40 on them

any other ideas

>trying to fix my client's laptop (Dell Alienware 15)
>it is worth like $1200
>it needs a new motherboard
>ask Dell how much a new motherboard would cost
>they send me a quote for $2400

Is this a joke?
I have asked them to recheck the number like 4 times, and they still tell me the price of the part I want (K9HJP) is $2400, literally double the laptop price

you dont have to worry about either getting damaged by the sun. both pc monitors and tvs have exhaust vents for hot air to escape, and they use the same kind of plastic in most cases.

also if you're really worried, you can usually find the max temperature for stuff in the spec sheets on the manufacturer's website. normally 50Celsius.

and if you want, you could get some window blinds. they would help keep your room cooler and stop sun shining into the room and make it easier for you to see what is on the screen.

PS. make sure the TV is burn-in resistant or you have to set a short timer to make it go to sleep when you're not using it to prevent burn-in.

get a used 2500k

>>51673300
if it's ceramic, it's ok. but you should really clean that nasty shit up. also you need to clean the top more, still bunch of paste left on it.
use alcohol or gasoline.

>>51673158
Thanks man, i'll look into it.

Considering a mini ITX build. Any input or advice? I've already checked that everything will fit so that's not an issue.

With regards to that 970 brand, I know it's not the best but it'll be visible through the long side vent so I don't want ugly colors and length is a consideration.

the fan blades are unevenly balanced because of dust stuck on them. take a brush and clean them.

you can usually remove the plastic cover around the heatsink with some clips and/or screws then unscrew the fan itself so you can easily brush both sides of the fan blades easily.
this also lets you clean out the dust from the heatsink channels itself easily without having to remove the heatsink from the GPU core.

shouldnt need a support. small spray of wd40 into the center of the fan could help (potentially).

>>51673319
call them and ask to talk to a manager. that sounds weird as fuck.

you could try finding a broken laptop from the net and pull the mobo out of that.

Have you checked amazon or ebay?

>also dont get it if it's a prebuilt
It's not a prebuilt, but I don't see why that matters. Prebuilts are generally garbage due to their price. Considering it has i7 4770, 16gb ram, 120 evo 850 ssd, monitor, etc etc, it'd be a decent deal even for a prebuilt. And yea, looking into it I'll probably sell the 750ti for a newer card.

Already tested PSU, I've narrowed it down to my CPU and my MOBO.
CPU: Intel core I5-4670k @ 3.5 GHZ
MOBO: Asrock H81 pro
How fucked am I?
