Apparently my phone, which I bought last Christmas, is no longer receiving updates from my carrier, leaving me stuck at android 4.4.4. Is it worth the time/effort/possible repercussions involved with installing a custom firmware (I was thinking of putting on CyanogenMod)?

I've been using a gen 1 moto g for a couple years now and it works fine on 4.4. I don't see a point in buying a new phone every year since I don't feel any slowdowns and the phone does what I want it to.
I don't even know who's the market yearly flagship phones are aimed at. What can you do on a phone that warrants a 600$ powerhouse?

I'm using a first gen moto G, so apparently it's more like 2 years. Also, the phone isn't outdated yet. Google released an updated OS for it close to a year ago, but my carrier (at&t) doesn't support it, so it won't automatically update. I could do it manually from my computer, but it's the exact same process to install Lollipop as it is to install CyanogenMod, so I don't see the point.
