It's literally impossible for a card to combust from the fan running slower. Modern GPUs just downclock heavily when they reach their thermal limits. The passive cooling from the heatsink is more than enough to ensure that it won't fry at idle. I don't believe any bullshit about drivers killing cards for a second. The only way they could is if they messed with the voltage and fried it that way, but that's not what happened.

read about the 'lossless delta color compression' that 'gets the same result' with lower bus bit bandwidth.
basically they compress the data so you get more throughput with less bandwidth.
but nvidia chose to gimp the 960 with 128 bit bandwidth and the 970 with 256 bit, whereas amd's top tier cards are running 512 bit and mid tier cards running 384 bit for quite some time now.
basically all of the 9xx cards could have been even faster if nvidia didn't gimp the ram bandwidth.
it's proof that you don't need the better gpu to sell cards, you only need a strangle hold on game devs with 'gameworks' whereas AMD has no choice but to go brute force.
as for actual color playback being better or worse on either brand, chances are you can't tell unless you're a color space nerd and calibrate your monitor all the time.
