Apple did. Except their trackpad is really good - and continues to be the gold standard that other trackpads have to try to beat.
I think most laptops would be better off with a trackpoint (like the Surface line) rather than trying to fit in a trackpad that they're clearly not willing to invest in.

I hate those shitty FacebookMachinePads™, They're garbage so I never use them but no matter what the keyboard is now uncomfortable to use because it's pushed back to make room for that POS.
I'd love to buy a laptop without a trackpad.
Trackpoints are the only acceptable way to move the cursor on a laptop.

My friends laptop has this. I would like to kill the person that thought this was a good idea. You can't be careless when running your finger over to the left or right buttons as you navigate or you will not click on the intended target. totally sucks!
